Theophilus Asante has been teaching the above subjects at a public secondary senior high school<br />

for the past 12 years. The age of his students range from 12-20 years old, and generally there are<br />

45 students in his class. He is a member of the school’s P.T.A., a form master and a house<br />

master, and within these roles he seeks to improve upon academic work and living conditions in<br />

the school. He received his Bachelor’s degree in geography from University of Ghana in 1998.<br />

He is married with a child, and his hobbies include theater. By taking part in TEA, Asante seeks<br />

to acquire new skills to involve students actively in the classroom and prepare them to do<br />

independent work.<br />

Gilbert Mohammed Ibrahim, Social Studies Teacher (Economics)<br />

Tema Secondary School<br />

Tema, Ghana (Population: 180,600)<br />

U.S. Host University: George Mason University<br />

Gilbert Mohammed Ibrahim has been teaching economics for the past 10 years to students<br />

between the ages of 15-19 and with a class size of about 55 students. He is the secretary of the<br />

Parent-Teacher Association of his school which promotes parental involvement in student<br />

learning. Also, he is the secretary of the Chaplaincy Committee, which organizes training<br />

sessions for teachers and students. He is a patron of the Scripture Union, Cadet Corp, and the<br />

Interact Club. Mohammed received a Bachelor of Education foundational degree from<br />

University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He is single and his hobbies include reading, music, and<br />

sports. His main goals for participating in TEA are to explore modern methodology and effective<br />

lesson planning to engage students profitably in class.<br />

Victor Akko Johnson, Social Studies Teacher (Geography)<br />

Tema Senior High School<br />

Tema, Ghana (Population: 180,600)<br />

U.S. Host University: Purdue University<br />

Victor Akko Johnson has been teaching geography at a public secondary school for 23 years. He<br />

teaches students between the ages of 15 and 18, and his classes typically have 55 students.<br />

Johnson is a patron of two of the school’s singing groups and a housemaster for House Three. He<br />

also doubles as a senior pastor of a local Pentecostal church where he does a lot of counseling for<br />

married couples. Johnson received his Bachelor’s degree in social science from the University of<br />

Cape Coast in August 1986 and a Diploma in education from the same university. He is currently<br />

married with four children – one boy and three girls. He hopes, through his participation in TEA,<br />

to gain skills in using technology in the teaching of geography in Ghana.<br />
