the tedious preparation of the Gothic Painting
in Poland volume for printing, she continued
publishing the results of her major research projects,
e.g. into table painting in Great Poland and mural
painting in Silesia. Her writing style was clear and
factual, though following in her masters’ footsteps,
she would pay considerable attention to the
formal aspect of her works, using rich vocabulary
and lively syntax. While editing texts, she revised
them meticulously, and if she had any suggestion
for change essential for the Reader’s sake, she
would offer it to the Author in her usual considerate
way. Having retired by the end of 1998,
Krystyna’s contribution to the final stages of the
works on the publication of her life was interrupted
and actually entirely prevented. The book
published in 2004 was not enthusiastically assessed
by the main organizer and co-creator of the
project, yet it has to be considered as on the highest
achievements of Polish artistic medievalism.
All that coincided with sudden intensification of
the after-effects of a painful foot injury suffered
several years before. And to make things worse,
Krystyna began to lose sight. Courageously
facing the adversities, she overcame them with no
complaints, with outstanding fortitude. She liked
music, not only classical. She enjoyed Jacques
Brel’s songs. Sensitive to the beauty of art and
nature, she would often recall mountainous
landscapes and scents of the Sub-Tatras meadows
which she remembered having spent holidays
with her father in Bukowina Tatrzańska. She
combined her admiration for nature with her love
for animals, holding special predilection for dogs.
She died suddenly on 14 June 2010 in a small flat
in central Warsaw. Having been bid farewell by
the closest family and friends, she was buried in
the family grave at the Wawrzyszewski Cemetery
in Warsaw.
