The major challenge remains to be seen in the new legislative-legal environment created by specific laws which respectively starting from 1 October 2010 have been regulating the operations of research units at the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as the ones that from 1 October 2011 will regulate higher education and redefine the procedure for conferring academic degrees and titles. The new regulations will affect both the financial and personnel situation of the Institute. Our successes were scored in two domains: firstly, we were once again ranked highly, namely within the first category, in view of the parametric efficiency of academic units over 2006-2009 evaluated in September 2010. Secondly, we completed the CADIS Project run by Associate Professor Ewa Dahlig- -Turek. The Project implying substantial investment in the research infrastructure, allowed for making our rich and unique information resources available to general research, as well as for recording of our current research results with new value added. Our research activity measured by a sizeable academic output in the form of new major books and articles, as well as our didactic efforts judged by subsequent doctoral graduations of our Doctoral Programme’s students, justify our slight optimism when assessing the closing balance of fears and hopes. n raport roczny is pan 2010 3
Osiągnięcia tej placówki są bezsporne, podobnie jak dorobek takich instytutów wchodzących w skład Wydziału Nauk Społecznych PAN, jak Instytut Historii, Instytut Filozofii i Socjologii czy Instytut Badań Literackich. Parafrazując znane powiedzenie Juliusza Słowackiego o czynach ludzi, które dają blask krajowi, można powiedzieć, iż o randze Polskiej Akademii Nauk, o jej miejscu na mapie naukowej Polski i Europy, decyduje dorobek tych właśnie placówek. Profesor Janusz Tazbir Accomplishments of that organization are unquestionable, similarly as the output of similar institutes forming part of the Department of Social Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences, such as the Institute of History, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, or the Institute of Literary Research. Paraphrasing the well-known saying by Juliusz Słowacki on the acts of individuals which shine glory on the country, it can be said that it is precisely the accomplishments of those institutions that contribute to the importance of the Polish Academy of Sciences and its high ranking on the academic map of Poland and Europe. n 4 raport roczny is pan 2010
