The dissertation focuses on the question of choinoiserie being in fashion in the culture of the
Commonwealth in the times of Stanislaus Augustus. It is an interdisciplinary study whose major focus
tis to look at selected questions from the perspective of anthropology and history of material culture.
The question of chinoiserie being in fashion is approached in a broad meaning of the term: as a cultural
phenomenon that has set its stamp also on philosophy, literature, and the political thought of the analyzed
period. The dissertation centres on three crucial issues: 1) image of the Middle Kingdom and its role in
the Enlightenment journalism; 2) presence of Chinese artefacts in palaces’ decor and furnishing; and
3) the concept of the so-called Anglo-Chinese garden in its theoretical, practical, and symbolic dimension.
The phenomenon has been set in the European context. Additionally, an attempt has been made to answer
two questions: whether the lack of direct contacts with China in the modern era had any impact on the
character of the chinoiserie fashion in the discussed period, and also whether the images of China and
the Chinese rendered by written source influenced in any way the perception and functioning of Chinese
objects, motifs and threads in Polish culture, or more broadly – in the European one.

Rozprawa doktorska dotyczy zagadnień z pogranicza antropologii teatru i filozofii sztuki. Autor, zadając
pytanie o definicję teatru alternatywnego, rozważa zagadnienia dotyczące różnych teorii estetycznych.
Podejmuje dyskusję z klasyczną Kantowską definicją „sztuki dla sztuki” i przeciwstawia jej tezy o antropologizacji
teorii sztuki. Skupia się przede wszystkim na związkach aktu twórczego z obrzędem głównie
w przestrzeni współczesnych projektów teatralnych.
The doctoral dissertation focuses on problems bordering on anthropology of theatre and philosophy of
art. The Author, when formulating the question of the definition of alternative theatre, analyzes issues
related to various aesthetical theories. He debates over the classical ‘art for art’s sake’ definition of Kant,
counterpoising it with the thesis of the anthropologizing of theory of art. He focuses first of all on the
relations between a creative act with ritual mainly in the space of contemporary theatre projects.
