F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S WITH GUIDING HANDS, WE CAN BREAK NEW grOUNDS Readying Students for the World F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S WITH GUIDING HANDS, WE CAN BREAK NEW grOUNDS Buoyed by industry demand for skilled manpower in several emerging areas, six new full-time courses were launched. These are: • Nitec in Attractions Operations • Nitec in Info-Communications Technology (Cloud Computing) • Nitec in Social Media & Web Development • Higher Nitec in Community Sport & Recreation Management • Higher Nitec in Marine Engineering • Higher Nitec in Retail Merchandising A Technical Diploma in Culinary Arts, in collaboration with world-renowned culinary school, Institut Paul Bocuse, in Lyon, France, was also introduced, bringing the total number of full-time courses offered by ITE to 95. On a national level, an enhanced Continuing Education & Training (CET) Skills Qualification Framework was implemented in January 2012. This is in support of the Ministry of Education’s CET Council’s recommendations for a comprehensive strategy to encourage national lifelong learning. This new and flexible CET framework allows working adults to complete and acquire ITE qualifications within a shorter time frame, with the reduction of CET modules and programme duration. Demand-led: To keep up with industry demands, new courses are launched regularly, equipping students with skills ranging from attractions operations and culinary, to marine engineering and more. 2004 ITE became the first public institution in Singapore to offer International Certificates overseas. 30 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 31
F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S WITH GUIDING HANDS, WE CAN BREAK NEW grOUNDS Creating New PATHWAYS F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S WITH GUIDING HANDS, WE CAN BREAK NEW grOUNDS Come January 2013, Normal (Technical) students will be able to pursue their secondary education in a specialised school designed to keep pace with their learning abilities. Located in Jurong East, Crest Secondary School, and another to be opened in the North in January 2014, will see its students move on to ITE for post-secondary technical education. While students go through the same four-year Normal (Technical) curriculum offered in mainstream schools, they will also enjoy lessons which place an emphasis on skill-based activities and practical learning in a real-world context. Students will also be allowed to take up ‘taster modules’ at lower secondary levels, before moving on to specialising in ITE Skills Certificate courses in Facility Services, Mechanical Servicing, Retail Services or Hospitality Services at upper secondary levels. Our top graduates were also commended at the 2011 MOE Special Awards Ceremony held in August. Fifteen ITE graduates who had progressed to full-time studies at the Polytechnics received the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (STEP) Award from Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat. Of the 15, five award recipients also received the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Book Prize for obtaining outstanding academic results. A Quality Education Behind every ITE student is a passionate teaching staff keen on uncovering the hidden potential of his or her students. Through our lecturers’ guiding hands, 11,721 students celebrated the completion of their ITE education in June 2011. Of these, 632 were awarded Certificates of Merit, with 171 of them awarded Course Medals as well, for excellent performance in their respective courses. Our top students were also rewarded with these prestigious awards: Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal – Aloysius Teo Tong Yew Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal – Kelvin Khong Yu Kai Sng Yew Chong Gold Medal – Muhammad Bin Mohd Jauhari Singapore Labour Foundation Gold Medal – Lee Chee Kean Celebration of Achievements: The ITE Graduation Ceremony did not just commemorate the outstanding performance of our top students, it also showcased our performing talents. Cream of the Crop: (from left) Muhammad Bin Mohd Jauhari, Kelvin Khong Yu Kai, Aloysius Teo Tong Yew and Lee Chee Keen emerged top of their cohort. 2005 ITE Advantage (2005-2009), the third strategic plan, was launched to establish ITE as a global player that produces ‘Workready, World-ready’ graduates. 2005 The ‘One ITE System, Three Colleges’ Governance and Education Model was adopted. 2005 The first mega campus, ITE College East, was opened. Located at Simei Avenue, it redefined the ITE learning environment completely. 2005 A Holistic ‘Hands-on, Minds-on, Hearts-on’ Education Model was introduced. 2005 ITE was conferred the Distinguished Public Service Award for Organisational Excellence by the Prime Minister’s Office. 2005 ITE obtained the Singapore Quality Award for business excellence. 32 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 33
