CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW One Step Closer TO Three ‘Colleges of the Future’ 20 Years of Working Together CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW In April 2011, we took another step towards the completion of our three ‘Colleges of the Future’. Our second Regional Campus, ITE College West, was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This came nine months after ITE College West commenced operations in July 2010. I am also pleased to announce that the development of our new ITE Headquarters and the third Regional Campus, ITE College Central, is on track and will be ready to take in students by January 2013. Many of the achievements over the past 20 years have been made possible by the passion, commitment and hard work of many people who want to make a difference to the lives of our students. At the 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner on 3 April 2012, our Guest-of-Honour, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Teo Chee Hean, noted: Nurturing Vital Global and Industry Linkages At ITE, we develop our students to be ‘Work-Ready and World-Ready’. That is why we continue to forge relationships and expand our strategic alliances with the international Vocational and Technical Education (VTE) community, as well as global and local industry partners. The strong industry ties and global network enable our staff to enjoy up-to-date knowledge and technology transfer, while our students benefit from the rich learning opportunities provided. During the year, we signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Challenger Institute of Technology in Perth, Australia, making a total of 14 international partners. We also renewed our MOUs with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Polytechnic (Canada), and the Global Education Network, which comprises Box Hill Institute (Australia); Kirkwood Community College (USA); SAIT Polytechnic (Canada); and ITE. Locally, we signed 34 new MOUs with leading companies in key industry sectors, making it a total of 92 to date. “…no award can be more satisfying than seeing the positive social impact that ITE has made on our young and our society. ITE has reached out to youths who may not have enjoyed much success in their earlier school years; helped them rediscover the love of learning; and prepared them well for the job market. They then go on to hold down good jobs, become more engaged working adults, and provide better lives for themselves and their families – thereby creating a virtuous cycle of improvement and growth.” As we celebrate and look back at the progress that has been made over the past 20 years, it is important that we recognise and acknowledge the efforts and contributions of the many people, including past and present Board and Advisory members, stakeholders, partners and staff. On behalf of ITE and the students, let us extend to them our gratitude and deepest appreciation. Looking ahead, as we move to our new Headquarters and Regional Campus in Ang Mo Kio at the end of 2012, I am confident that we will all continue to work together, hand in hand, and fulfill ITE’s role in Singapore’s education system. Meeting Market Demands Mr Bob Tan Beng Hai Chairman Institute of Technical Education ITE introduced seven new courses in FY 2011 in response to market demand. This includes a Technical Diploma in Culinary Arts, held in collaboration with renowned French culinary school, Institut Paul Bocuse, in Lyon, France. This brings the number of full-time courses at Certificate and Diploma levels to 95; compared to the 24 courses offered when ITE was first established as a post-secondary institution 20 years ago. For adult learners, ITE also introduced an enhanced and more flexible Continuing Education & Training Skills Qualification Framework in January 2012. Offering more streamlined programmes and shorter course duration, adult learners can now obtain ITE qualifications in just three years, instead of four. 06 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 07
