F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S HAND IN HAND, WE CAN FOrgE NEW PATHWAYS In an increasingly-demanding job market, it is no longer enough to be locally competitive. To plug ITE students into the world, we actively engage the global Vocational and Technical Education (VTE) community. Through strategic alliances with top quality VTE institutions, we are able to give our students the opportunity to gain the global skills set they need to find a job in Singapore, and in the world. HAND IN HAND, WE CAN FOrgE NEW PATHWAYS Global Connections In 2011, we signed a new MOU with Challenger Institute of Technology, Perth, Australia, and renewed another with the exclusive Global Education Network (GEN), comprising Box Hill Institute (Australia); Kirkwood Community College (USA); SAIT Polytechnic (Canada); and ITE. We also hosted over 1,100 foreign visitors in 100 visits during FY 2011. Notable visitors included the American Federation of Teachers, USA; the House of Commons Education Select Committee, United Kingdom; His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Azim of Brunei Darussalam; His Majesty Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, South Africa; and Ministers from India, Republic of Panama, and Afghanistan. Institutions Challenger Institute Technology Global Education Network Nature of Partnership Collaboration on curriculum development, delivery and assessment, staff and student development and exchange, and benchmarking. Collaboration to enhance the employability of students through global education exchange and development. In addition, we hosted the 22nd Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for Vocational and Technical Education and Training (VOCTECH) Governing Board Meeting at ITE College West in October 2011. Comprising 11 member countries, this instalment of the SEAMEO VOCTECH Governing Board Meeting was graced by Mrs Tan Ching Yee, then Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. As host, covering chair, and the Singapore representative to SEAMEO VOCTECH, we shared the development plans of the new ITE College Central and an e-learning initiative – ’ITE World’ – with other SEAMEO VOCTECH members. Playing Host: Then Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Tan Ching Yee (seated, in grey suit) with representatives from Southeast Asia at the opening ceremony of the 22nd SEAMEO VOCTECH Governing Board Meeting. Guests from Abroad: We were kept busy through the year, hosting visitors who were interested in ITE’s education model and system. Some of the guests we hosted include (clockwise from top left) His Excellency Dr Mya Aye, Minister for Education, Myanmar; His Excellency Shri Balmiki Prasad Singh, Governor of the State of Sikkim, India; the House of Commons Education Select Committee, United Kingdom; and the American Federation of Teachers. 2007 The first International Student Seminar was held in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Hong Kong Vocational Training Council. 2007 ITE received its first international award for excellence – the Global Harvard-IBM Innovations Award in Transforming Government, awarded by the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University. 38 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 39
F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S F Y 2 0 1 1 H I G H L I G H T S HAND IN HAND, WE CAN FOrgE NEW PATHWAYS Spreading Our Wings HAND IN HAND, WE CAN FOrgE NEW PATHWAYS To share our expertise in developing a sustainable and robust VTE model, we, through our subsidiary, ITE Education Services Pte Ltd, provided expertise in the development of a Model Skills Training Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. The Centre was officially commissioned by Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment in September 2011. It offers four National ITE Certificate (Nitec) International courses (Facility Technology, Electronics, Info-Comms Technology and Mechatronics). Local Network On the local front, we actively sought to strengthen our ties with industry partners and forged new ones. This not only increased opportunities for student development through local and overseas industry attachments, but also enhanced learning, and facilitated knowledge and technology transfer. A total of 34 new MOUs were signed with leading companies – 10 more than the previous year – bringing the total number of active MOUs in FY 2011 to 92. Some of our new MOU partners include: Industry Partners Canon Singapore Conrad Centennial Singapore Nature of Partnership Develop a Digital Imaging Workflow Centre in ITE, provide digital imaging products and services, and enhance ITE’s Design and Media courses. Collaborate in Hospitality and Tourism training and development for students. Sentosa Development Collaborate in areas of Business, Hospitality and Tourism-related Cooperation training and development. SIA Engineering Co Ltd Singapore Cruise Centre VMware International Limited Wildlife Reserves Provide authentic learning opportunities in Aerospace Technology and Avionics for students through the setting up of an Aircraft Cabin Maintenance and In-flight Entertainment System Training Centre at ITE College Central. Provide authentic learning, project collaboration and attachment opportunities for students, as well as develop staff capabilities in Passenger Services and related training for the Ferry and Cruise Terminals. Collaborate in the development and training of virtualisation and cloud technologies through the setting up of the ITE-VMware Centre of Excellence in ITE College West. Collaborate on environmental sustainability and conservation initiatives, with attachment opportunities for students. Working Together: Our network of industry partners have grown steadily over the years. They now include (clockwise from top left) Singapore Airport Terminal Services Limited, NTUC-nEbO, Conrad Centennial Singapore, and Sentosa Development Corporation. 2008 First Technical Engineer Diploma - Machine Technology - was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. 2009 The second International Conference on Vocational and Technical Education was organised. 2009 MOE introduced the new ITE-MOE Quality Assurance Framework with an External Review Panel. 40 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 ITE HIGHLIGHTS 2011/2012 41
