TB Davis - The Only Sailor
in the Fleet - Exhibition
Between 1922 and 1940, in the era
of hunger marches, the Wall Street
Crash and the Great Depression,
Jersey-born Thomas Benjamin Davis
gave away an estimated million
pounds to what he deemed to be
good causes. The greatest
philanthropist the Island has ever
known, Davis was born in poverty,
yet when he died 75 years later, he
was a multi-millionaire. This semipermanent
exhibition tells his story,
from humble beginnings as a 13 year
old fisherman to becoming a qualified
extra master under sail. His history
will be traced through the years
when he made his fortune in
Southern Africa to the glory of
owning the racing schooner
Westward.

Philippe d'Auvergne, the
Prince Behind the Tower
- Exhibition
Jerseyman Philippe d'Auvergne,
(1754-1816) was an explorer,
scientist, artist, naval officer,
administrator, spymaster and ruler,
albeit briefly, of a small European
state. During the French Revolution
he was an honorary French aristocrat
and an officer in the Royal Navy
serving the British Crown. His
interests were those of a wealthy
country gentleman of the period and
here at La Hougue Bie he built a
Gothic folly - the Prince’s Tower. This
is his story.

Portelet Group Summer
Exhibition of Paintings
Browse the art on display, upstairs, at
the Portelet Inn, for the duration of
the summer. The artists exhibiting are
Diana Bowen, Jo Marshman, Norma
Priddis, Joyce Berry and Joy Langdon.
There will be 80 paintings on show,
mostly Jersey land and seascapes and
other subjects in a variety of styles.
