Georgian Town House which was
constructed in the centre of
St Helier around 1730. Since it
was donated to the National Trust
for Jersey in 2003 it has
undergone a meticulous repair to
restore it to its former glory.
Visitors to the house will step
back in time and experience the
beauty of its authentic period
interiors, and learn about the
people who lived there through
the sounds, tastes and smells of
the working house. The house is
Jersey Museum presents history
from 250,000 years ago when the
first people arrived in Jersey and
continues through the centuries to
explore the factors that have
shaped this unique island and the
people who live here. Find out why
Jersey remained loyal to the
English Crown despite being so
close to France; listen to Jersey-
French being spoken; learn about
the Island's traditional farming
industry and watch fascinating
archive footage of the early years
of tourism. You will also have a
chance to explore the perfectly
restored Victorian Merchant’s
House with traditional gas lamps
and period furniture transporting
you back to Victorian times.
This year, on display for the first
time, is the famous painting by
Copley – The Death of Major
Peirson. Normally hanging at the
Tate Britain, this exceptional
painting representing the 1781
Battle of Jersey, a pivotal point in
Jersey’s history is on loan to
