Paying for care
If you are moving into a care home with help from Community Care, you will be expected to
pay towards the fees. The amount you pay will depend on your financial circumstances. We
will work out how much on the basis of a national set of rules.
How much will it cost?
There is no charge for making an assessment of your needs. You may, however, have to pay
some or all of the cost of living in a care home, depending on your situation.
There is a national set of rules for working out the charges that you will have to pay, and this
amount will depend on your circumstances. You will be expected to pay something out of
your regular income. The rest will depend on your savings and assets. When working out
your contribution towards the costs, we will take into account:
● your income (from pensions, benefits, etc.)
● your savings
● your assets (the value of your home, unless a spouse, partner or close dependent relative
will continue to live there, or your move into residential care is only temporary)
We will ignore the value of your home for the first 12 weeks following your move into a care home.
This will give you time to reassure yourself that you are happy with the decisions you have made.
We will pay any short fall during this 12 week period. If, however, you sell your property within this
12 week period, the resulting proceeds will be taken into account from the date of the sale.
If you move into a nursing home and have been assessed as needing nursing services from a
trained nurse whilst living there, the National Health Service will pay a contribution towards your
nursing home fees. This is the case for care homes in Wales. Arrangements are different if
you move into a nursing home in England or Scotland.
Calculating your contribution
After looking at your financial circumstances, we will work out the amount you will be required
to pay. We will give you details of this in writing.
For further information on paying for care, please ask for a copy of our leaflet entitled ‘Paying
for Residential and Nursing Home Care’, available from your local Principal Office (addresses
listed on page 6).
Continuing NHS Health Care
If your health needs are considerable because of a:
● long lasting illness
● severe disability
● complex physical or mental health problem
you may be assessed as needing Continuing NHS Health Care. In these situations, the health
service may purchase a place for you in a private home and pay your fees in full. This would
affect the amount of your state pension and other benefits you may be receiving. We can
provide you with more information about Continuing NHS Health Care and how eligibility to
receive it is assessed.
