Fire Protection The Fire Department of the City of Oklahoma City provides fire and emergency medical response services for City residences and businesses throughout the City’s 621 square miles, educates the public in fire and injury prevention, enforces City and State fire codes, and investigates arson incidents. The map below shows the location and the 3- minute response area for each of the City’s 35 fire stations. FIRE STATION LOCATIONS AND FIRE RESPONSE AREAS Service Standards A property is served with fire protection when it is located within the fire response areas set forth below, when the required fire flow is within that specified for the fire zone in accordance with existing standards, and when vehicle access is by two separate all-weather hard-surface routes. Actions Review fire response standards and fire safety standards for different areas and types of development. Conduct a fire station location study to determine the need for and location of additional fire stations based on anticipated growth and development. Continue cooperative arrangements with other municipalities in the metro area to provide fire response assistance as needed and to identify and address mutual concerns. For proposed development outside the base response time area or where fire flow available from the public water supply system does not meet the fire flow requirements, additional private fire protection facilities should be required. Emergency Response EMSA provides emergency medical response throughout Oklahoma City. Service Standard Respond to all Priority 1 (life-threatening) calls within 8 minutes and 59 seconds from receipt of call. Actions Identify and enact a permanent source of funding to cover the difference between the costs of providing emergency medical response and the amounts collected as fees for service. Evaluate warning systems to determine whether these systems are providing sufficient warning to citizens of natural disasters, particularly in rural areas and determine what changes or equipment is needed. Encourage the construction of additional emergency shelters, including the building of “safe rooms” or storm shelters for existing homes and newly constructed residences. Develop and implement a “311” phone number for non-emergency (requests for information) calls from citizens. Educate citizens as to the proper uses of the “911” and “311” systems. 50
