5.2.6 Growth in Demand versus Network Capacity
The demand for more electricity by new as well as existing customers is placing an
unbearable strain on the existing infrastructure.
Insufficient capital is available to ensure timeous upgrading/expansion of the
infrastructure and the new/proposed developers are therefore requested to invest large
sums of capital on behalf of the Municipality to ensure that they will be properly served.
The evident shortage of generating capacity within Eskom is also a point of much
concern as the load shedding or proposed rationing of electricity has a huge negative
impact on the local economy and the morale of the community.
The ratio of electricity consumed by residential compared to the combined consumption
of business and industrial is estimated to be the following:
