1.1 Objectives served by the <strong>EU</strong> <strong>funds</strong>:<br />
o In the period 2000–2006 (2008) 71 :<br />
Objective 1: To promote the development and structural adjustment of regions whose<br />
development is lagging behind.<br />
Objective 2: To support the economic and social conversion of areas experiencing<br />
structural difficulties.<br />
Objective 3: To support the adaptation and modernization of education, training, and<br />
employment policies and systems in regions not eligible under Objective 1.<br />
o In the period 2007–2013 (2015):<br />
Objective 1: To promote the convergence of the less developed regions of the <strong>EU</strong>.<br />
Objective 2: To promote regional competitiveness and employment.<br />
Objective 3: To promote territorial cooperation.<br />
1.2 Funds made available to <strong>EU</strong> member states through the Structural and Cohesion Funds:<br />

In the period 2000–2006 (2008) the total amounts (which were originally made available<br />
to the 15 <strong>EU</strong> MS) under each Objective, are (in € billion):<br />
- Objective 1: 136.0<br />
- Objective 2: 22.5 72<br />
