76 The enlargement of the EU has significantly increased the number of regions below the threshold at which the
EU intervenes to help them catch-up. In the new MS, over 92% of the population lives in regions with a GDP/head
below 75% of the EU average). This is why most of the available funds for the period 2007–2013 are going to
Convergence Objective 1 regions.
