ART 308 19th Century Art: Rise <strong>of</strong> Modernism<br />

19th Century Art: Rise <strong>of</strong> Modernism: This course explores developments in the painting and<br />

sculpture <strong>of</strong> Europe and America from the late 18th century age <strong>of</strong> “political revolution” to the<br />

early 20th century age <strong>of</strong> “artistic revolution.” Artists like David, Gericault, and Delacroix will be<br />

explored in the light <strong>of</strong> Enlightenment theories and revolutionary politics, followed by the socialist<br />

theories <strong>of</strong> the Realists Courbet and Daumier and concluding with the artistic innovations <strong>of</strong><br />

Manet, Monet and Cezanne. Fall term, every year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 309 Ancient Art: The Birth <strong>of</strong> Art<br />

Ancient Art: The Birth <strong>of</strong> Art: This course will examine ancient artistic traditions in the Near East,<br />

Egypt, Greece and Rome. Special emphasis will be placed on expressive contrasts between<br />

the cultures <strong>of</strong> the Near East and West. Spring Term, every other year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 313 Medieval & Renaissance Art<br />

Medieval and Renaissance Art: The course will explore the development <strong>of</strong> Medieval and<br />

Renaissance art in Europe from the 6th to the 16th centuries, exploring stylistic and cultural<br />

changes as revealed in sculpture, painting and architecture. Spring Term, every other year.<br />

3 hrs.<br />

ART 315 20th & 21st Century Art: Modern Era<br />

20th and 21st Century Art: Modern Era: Critical examination <strong>of</strong> major trends in the visual arts<br />

from c. 1870 A.D. to the present, within the context <strong>of</strong> developments in science, philosophy, religion,<br />

politics, etc. Prerequisites: ART 215, 216 or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Spring Term,<br />

every other year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 316 Baroque & Rococo Art<br />

Baroque and Rococo Art: This course explores the art <strong>of</strong> Europe and America in the Baroque<br />

and Rococo age, which saw religious, scientific, navigational and artistic exploration. Artists like<br />

Caravaggio, Bernini, and Rembrandt will be explored in the light <strong>of</strong> 17th and 18th century theories<br />

and discoveries, followed by the Rococo art <strong>of</strong> Watteau, Boucher and Elisabeth Vigee Le-<br />

Brun. Spring Term, every other year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 320 Digital Animation, Flash & Video<br />

Digital Animation, Flash and Video Editing: This course introduces students to animation, flash<br />

design and video editing. Students will be required to use critical thinking in applying principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> design in multimedia applications. Prerequisites: ART 208 and ART 209. Course fee may<br />

apply. Spring term, every year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 325 History <strong>of</strong> Photography<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Photography: This course explores developments in photography from the earliest<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> photographic exploration with the camera obscura, to early experiments with the daguerreotype<br />

and calotype, to its gradual attempt to be accepted as an art form, and its present<br />

day experiments with the digital image. Spring Term, every other year. 3 hrs.<br />

ART 329 Film Photography II<br />

Film Photography II: Further investigation <strong>of</strong> photography as a creative medium and the instruction<br />

<strong>of</strong> advanced photographic techniques. Prerequisite: ART 227. Spring Term, every other<br />

year. Lab fee may apply. 3 hrs.<br />
