low-income senior citizens who are recruited from <strong>the</strong> community and paid a small<br />

stipend. They serve an average <strong>of</strong> four hours per day providing one-on-one service to<br />

one resident in <strong>the</strong> morning and to ano<strong>the</strong>r resident in <strong>the</strong> afternoon. They provide<br />

companionship and personal assistance, take individuals on outings and to recreational<br />

events, help in <strong>the</strong> classroom, and serve as friends and mentors to <strong>the</strong> residents <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are assigned to serve.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>y are not state employees, <strong>the</strong> Foster Grandparents and Senior<br />

Companions are an integral part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lanterman</strong> community and will be kept<br />

in<strong>for</strong>med on <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> closure and future opportunities that may exist <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to serve in community settings. Upon closure, <strong>the</strong> Foster Grandparent and Senior<br />

Companion Programs at Agnews were transferred to San Andreas Regional <strong>Center</strong><br />

to enable services to continue in community settings. A regional center sponsor <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Lanterman</strong> Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs will also be<br />

explored as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lanterman</strong> closure process.<br />
