(KCI) features an employee so that you can get to know more about them both professionally and personally. It is always good to have people on your team whose energy and enthusiasm is contagious – natural leaders with new ideas and a desire to always pursue better ways of doing things. KCI’s Director of Operations, Don Ross, is an industry leader who tackles challenges head-on to find the best solutions. Don joined KCI in 2008, bringing with him tremendous operational expertise in collection systems. Mr. Ross has 23 years of solid waste experience under his belt, having managed collection and transfer operations for both public and private sector organizations. Prior to joining KCI, Don served as the Director of the Solid Waste Division for the City of Dunedin, Florida. Earlier in his career he held a variety of management positions for private waste companies, including 13 years with Waste Management, Inc. Don was the Connecticut Market Area Director of Operations for Waste Management, overseeing several hauling companies and transfer stations, 150 collection routes, 250 employees, and was responsible for $60 million in annual revenues. Don applies this formidable portfolio of 1966 2012 hands-on experience to benefit his clients. Within KCI, Don utilizes his skill as an effective Project Manager. He has managed numerous collection-related projects including conversion from manual to automated collection and dual to single stream recycling, implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems and Pay-as-youthrow (PAYT) programs, route optimization planning, rate analyses, and operational feasibility and assessment studies. Don has taken a special interest in the role technology plays in solid waste collection systems and he recognizes that technological advancements are making rapid changes in this area. He says “I want to leverage technology to improve and protect the wellbeing of collection employees and to advance the science of solid waste collection across the Southeast.” Don’s love of all things “tech” and his eagerness to increase collection efficiency through data management has kept KCI at the forefront of the current trend toward applying new technologies to collection operations. He believes that technological innovation and data tracking can optimize solid waste collection operations to the benefit of staff and customers alike. “If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it!” is Don’s motto.
