Mitch!
As part of SWANA’s Recycling Manager E-Training
Series, Miriam Zimms presented “Planning an
Education and Outreach Program.” Participants
learned how to design, measure, and execute a
cost-effective and action-oriented program for their
community. Mitch Kessler presented Processing
of Recyclables and shared how to research, plan,
budget for and execute cost-effective processing
contracts.
Miriam Zimms also presented The Role of Waste
Assessments (WA) in a Successful Commercial/
Institutional Recycling Program for SWANA’s
monthly E-Webinar.
Maureen Schaefer presented

- Building Blocks to Recycling
at the SWIX/DEP C&D
Recycling Workshop in
Orlando. Maureen spoke to
the audience about programs
across the country and how
to target and plan for C&D
recovery within the building
community.
While attending the Recycle Florida Today (RFT)
Summer Conference held in St. Pete Beach Don
Ross presented “The Single Stream Tsunami.”
Participants learned a step-by-step approach to
evaluating and implementing new technology and
program elements in their own operation. Robin
Mitchell spoke about “Charting a Path toward
Zero Waste.” Robin explained to attendees how
communities can plan for, measure, and develop
programs that reach upwards of 75% or more in
their diversion rates. In addition, Miriam Zimms
spoke about the “Mecklenburg County, NC Food
Waste Diversion Study.”
Don Ross and Mitch Kessler led technical
sessions at the 50th Anniversary WASTECON in
Washington D.C. Don discussed the benefits of
RFID, GIS, and geo-spatial data collection and
analysis in a presentation titled “Data is King: If
You Don’t Measure It, You Can’t Manage It!”
Mitch presented “Share the Love: Public Private
Partnerships that Work!!” Mitch shared the
elements of a successful partnership and best
practices in contract negotiation.

the rest of the Solid Waste Association of North America
(SWANA) staff on 50 years of a job well done!
Don volunteers as a certified instructor for the Solid Waste
Association of North America (SWANA), in both the Managing
Recycling Systems and Managing MSW Collection Systems
courses. He sees teaching as an opportunity to help others
grow in the industry by sharing his many years of experience.
Don’s passion for life shows through his famously youthful
smile and the energy he brings to both work and play.
His many personal interests include motorsports, where
he has raced with the likes of “old blue eyes,” Paul Newman,
and photography, for which he maintains a website
(www.dpross.blogspot.com) to share photos of his adventures
both at home and abroad. He enjoys taking his boat out for
an afternoon of water skiing, but most importantly, he enjoys
spending time with his wife Krissy, laughing, traveling, and enjoying
her special talent for cooking. An eternal optimist, Don
always looks for a positive outcome to every situation. We are
all grateful to have him here at KCI!
