6 acres <strong>of</strong> avocados<br />

10.6 acres <strong>of</strong> bananas<br />

• Opened 398,673 feet <strong>of</strong> drains on approximately 1,075 acres <strong>of</strong><br />

land primarily cocoa fields.<br />

• Rehabilitated 27.75 miles <strong>of</strong> farm roads including clearing <strong>of</strong><br />

overhangings, base work, slide removal, drainage and clearing<br />

<strong>of</strong> culverts.<br />

• Distributed 3,225 bags <strong>of</strong> fertilizers to farmers at a subsidized<br />

price <strong>of</strong> EC$75.<br />

• Established 50 acres <strong>of</strong> Nutmegs, 14.5 acres <strong>of</strong> Tree Crops<br />

(including cocoa, breadfruit, bananas, avocadoes, mangoes and<br />

soursop).<br />

• Planted 6 acres <strong>of</strong> pigeon peas and 3 1/2 acres <strong>of</strong> root crops<br />

(including cassava, yam and ginger).<br />

• Established Cassava Experimental Plots with 11 different<br />

varieties at Laura Estate.<br />

• Launched two (2) Marine Protected Areas sites (Molinere/<br />

Beausejour MPA & the Oyster Bed in Carriacou).<br />

Improving Health Care<br />

• 600 clients received medical assistance for: medical treatment<br />

not available locally; medication, diagnostic procedures, special<br />

medical supplies.<br />

• 21 patients received free Oncology treatment overseas. Mr.<br />

Speaker, if these patients had to pay for their treatment, the<br />

average cost per patient would have been US$223,809.52.<br />

• Provided duty free concessions on equipment to Island Health<br />

Services and a monthly contribution <strong>of</strong> EC$1,000 per patient per<br />

month for dialysis.<br />

• Forty (40) children received specialist care in cardiology and<br />

orthopedics provided by the International Hospital for Children<br />

in Virginia.<br />
