This year, <strong>Government</strong> will continue all <strong>of</strong> its safety net programmes<br />
including:<br />
Public Assistance - $9.6 million<br />
School Feeding - $4.0 million<br />
Textbooks - $4.0 million<br />
Transportation for Needy Students - $1.3 million<br />
<strong>Government</strong> has requested technical and financial assistance from the<br />
World Bank to establish a comprehensive safety nets policy, central<br />
beneficiary registry as well as institutional strengthening including staff<br />
training for the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Social Development.<br />
This year, the Child Welfare Authority will assume full responsibility for<br />
all aspects <strong>of</strong> Child Protection including adoption and foster care.<br />
A new Parenting Policy will be prepared and the Policy on the Aged will<br />
be implemented.<br />
5.11 EDUCATION AND HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT<br />
Mr. Speaker, education and human resource development has been a top<br />
priority <strong>of</strong> this Administration from day one. Our focus on this vital area<br />
<strong>of</strong> development will be maintained.<br />
Consistent with the strategic plan, the four broad areas <strong>of</strong> focus are:<br />
• Teacher Education and Training:<br />
• Refocusing the curriculum:<br />
• Upgrading and rebuilding <strong>of</strong> educational facilities:<br />
• Creating and providing educational opportunities<br />
