Technical Development of Waste Sector in Sweden: Survey

MASTER’S THESIS IN ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES RESEARCH
2 METHODOLOGY
The research has followed a qualitative and quantitative analysis, through three different phases
1. Analysis of driving forces in technical development of waste sector in Sweden
2. Identification of emerging waste treatment technologies for Sweden and
3. Analysis of environmental performance of the emerging technology by using an LCA model.
The first two phases are carried out by qualitative analysis like literature review and questionnaire
survey; and the third phase is done by quantitative analysis through LCA model.
2.1. Analyzing the Driving Forces
In the first phase, key driving forces or the leading actors in the development of waste technology in
Sweden are analyzed through literature review and a questionnaire survey. Literature review has been
conducted with following materials;
• Books
• Research papers from publications
• KTH research database
• International Journals (peer reviewed)
• Waste management and treatment reports
• Questionnaire survey for professionals’ opinion.
• Field visit of Swedish waste management facilities.
• Information from the open source (internet).
A questionnaire survey has also been done among waste management organizations working in
Sweden. Survey was done in person as well as forwarding the questionnaire by email to the
professionals’ in different waste management organizations companies like, TPS, AF, SWECO,
Swedish EPA, Avfall Sverige, and Stockholm Municipality etc in Sweden. 16 waste management
experts from Sweden are participate in the questionnaire survey and gave their valuable feedback.
Moreover, twenty-three PhD students were interviewed at DTU Campus, Denmark, between 11 th
and 17 th June 2009 who worked in waste management systems for different countries during an LCA
course on waste management. Sample questions (Box 1) of the questionnaire survey are given
bellow.
