11 Bed linens must be changed at least weekly or more often as needed. Beds shall be straightened<br />

as necessary by <strong>the</strong> resident or facility staff.<br />

12 Wastepaper baskets <strong>and</strong> trash containers used in <strong>the</strong> facility must be metal or Underwriter's<br />

Laboratory approved plastic baskets. Outside trash containers must be equipped with covers but<br />

this requirement may be waived if trash <strong>and</strong> garbage is placed in bags <strong>and</strong> sealed.<br />

704 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENT AREAS<br />

704.1 Each residential long term care facility must meet <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> requirements <strong>for</strong> resident<br />

general use areas:<br />

a. Each facility must have dining room <strong>and</strong> living room space easily accessible to all<br />

residents;<br />

b. Dining rooms <strong>and</strong> living rooms must not be used as bedrooms;<br />

c. Dining rooms <strong>and</strong> living rooms must be available <strong>for</strong> use by residents at appropriate<br />

times to provide periods of social diversion <strong>and</strong> individual or group activities;<br />

d. All resident areas must be decorated, painted <strong>and</strong> appropriately furnished;<br />

e. Dining rooms must be furnished with dining table <strong>and</strong> chairs appropriate to <strong>the</strong><br />

size/function of <strong>the</strong> facility.<br />

704.2 Square footage requirements <strong>for</strong> living room, dining room <strong>and</strong> activities room are as follows:<br />

a. Facilities with 16 beds or less:<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> facility must have a combined total of at least 20 square feet of living room<br />

<strong>and</strong> activities space per licensed bed;<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> facility must have at least 20 square feet of designated dining space per<br />

licensed bed;<br />

3. In facilities licensed prior to <strong>the</strong> effective date of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>regulations</strong>, <strong>the</strong> space<br />

provided <strong>for</strong> living <strong>and</strong> dining room purposes shall total a combined square<br />

footage of at least 20 square feet per licensed bed.<br />

b. Facilities with more than 16 beds:<br />

1. In facilities with 17 to 46 beds, <strong>the</strong> living <strong>and</strong> activities space must be a separate<br />

room with a square footage of at least 20 square feet per licensed beds;<br />

2. In facilities with 47 to 100 beds, <strong>the</strong>re must be one (1) living room <strong>and</strong> two (2)<br />

activities rooms with a combined square footage of at least 20 square feet per<br />

licensed bed;<br />
