ing. She spends only the briefest of
moments with others of the same age and
is
tutored mercilessly in codes and translations.
When her parents' plans for escaping
to Brazil falter, the family is forced to
use of music throughout from Stefan Will.
Hans Fromm's photography equally captures
this wistful tone. Petzold's film bene-
in particular from an approach that is
fits
more personal than political, drawing
truths from situations such as Jeanne's
frustration at being dressed in the most
unassuming outfits possible instead of the
latest fashions. Essentially sympathetic
and refusing to rely on stereotypes. "The
State I Am In" tells a challenging and tragic
tale. Chris \\ iegand
POSSIBLE LOVES
(AMORES POSSIVEIS) **i/2
Starring Murilo Benicio, Carolina
Ferraz, Emilia de Mello and Beth Goulart.
Directed and produced by Sandra Werneck.
H ritten by Paulo Halm. No distributor set.
Comedyl Drama. Portuguese-language; subtitled.
Sot yet rated. Running time: 92 min.
This entertaining yet distinctly average
Brazilian comedy-drama playfully
employs a "Sliding Doors"-style conceit,
following not just two but three possible
fates for its central character.
College student Carlos (Murilo
Benicio. recently seen alongside—or
rather, underneath -Penelope Cruz in
"Woman On Top") waits for his date outside
a Rio de Janeiro movie house. He
lingers in the lobby restlessly, watching the
rain fall outside. Will she show up?
Director Sandra Werneck ("Little Book
Of Love") cuts from this scenario to three
very different set-ups 1 5 years later, showing
Carlos in completely contrasting situations.
The first
sees him married, yet experiencing
the urge to have an extramarital
affair. The next has him in a happy homosexual
relationship, with a child from a
previous marriage. In the last, he is a total
hedonist, dedicated to living la vida loca,
yet at the same time still living at home
with his disapproving (and somewhat
bemused) mother.
Wemeck slips ill and out of these alternate
lives with relative ease, employing
some imaginative camerawork and sensibly
avoiding a more consecutive, straightforward
structure. Playing multiple characters,
Benicio and TV actress Carolina
Ferraz do very well and create some
real extremely chemistry. Paulo Malm's
script has some lovely touches, notably a
supreme dating service that comes complete
with a "localizer" device for customers
to find their perfect partner
Musical director Nabuco—who previously
collaborated with Werneck on her debut.
"Little Book Of Love"—has compiled a
return to Germany, where Jeanne's continued
attempts to live like a typical adolescent
have venous repercussions.
Evans and Donna Summer alongside
rich soundtrack, placing tracks from Bill
As the unfortunate Jeanne, whose life is some upbeat, original additions. DP
made up of a series of lies. Julia Hummer Walter Carvalho ("Central Station"), who
gives an assured performance. Her melancholic
world-weariness is echoed through film, delivers some sterling cinematogra-
Tim Hardin's recording of "How Can We phy, capturing a rainy night in Rio one
Hang On To A Dream" (which opens and minute and a summer's afternoon the
closes the film) and the sparing yet striking next. Chris \\ iegand
STRUMPET ••
Starring Christopher Eccleston, Jcnna
G, Stephen Walters, David Crelin and
Jonathan Ryland. Directed by Danny Boyle.
Written by Jim Cartwright. Produced by
Martin Can: No distributor set. Drama.
Not yet rated. Running time: 72 min.
More at home on the small screen for
which it was made than in the theatre.
"Strumpet" opens with an extraordinary
rant from the always excellent Christopher
Eccleston ("Jude") as the foul-mouthed
performance poet Strayman.
Lank-haired, dishevelled and unshaven,
the enigmatic Strayman lives alone
except for his dogs— in a dirty apartment.
—
Seeing a girl in trouble (Jenna G) in his
local pub, he comes to her rescue. When
she proves to be a competent guitarist, the
two start performing together in the poet's
den—an empty room with lyrics scrawled
all over the walls. Their efforts are overheard
by savvy neighbourhood crim
Knockoff (Stephen Walters), who promptly
decides to become their manager. The
three travel to London to find their fortune,
but when the record company takes a
shine to the pretty girl instead of the
increasingly awkward poet, the pop dream
turns sour.
"Strumpet" was screened alongside the
superior "Vacuuming Completely Nude In
Paradise" at this year's Edinburgh
International Film Festival. A kind of DV
double bill, these two decidedly grim slices
of British life sadly show little of the verve
and imagination that their director Danny
Boyle displayed in the '90s success stories
"Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting." At
the center of "Strumpet" is Eccleston. who
came to audiences' attentions in "Shallow
Grave" and who sinks his teeth into the
role of Strayman with considerable enthusiasm.
However, while the performances
are spot on, Jim Cartwright's script is less
successful than lor "Vacuuming
( ompletely Nude In Paradise." parti) due
to the noxious pop son.u that is irritating
enough on the first airing, lei alone the
manj repeats. I he main problem with
"Strumpet" is thai the stor) told is so simply,
so surprise-free, thai vim start to wonder
whal kmd of spin Boyle will put on il
\iiil just as you start to wondei ii ends
