MAILROOM
THE D-BATE CONTINUES
Dear BOXOFFICE:
Our family-owned small-town theatre
business has been around for 66 years,
since 1935. We've seen a lot of things come
and go. The one constant the world over
A yellow
light means
get ready
. .. has been the
35mm format. The
to stop,
not hold
[the pedal]
to the floor
— doesn't
anybody
get this?
pirated versions of
35mm had a bad
picture and worse
sound. [If we] go
digital, [audiences
can have] quality
picture and sound
for free. I can sit
down and watch
every new movie
weeks before I
have a hope of
actually running
them, all for free
off the Internet.
The quality may
be even better than
the print I
get!
I realize the studios don't care about the
little guys, but big fish need little fish to survive.
There's some serious thinking that has
to be done, and quickly. Our industry lead-
ers remind me of the captain of the Titanic.
A yellow light means get ready to stop,
not hold [the pedal] to the floor doesn't
anybody get this?
POINT OF VUE
Dear BOXOFFICE:
When I
you were running a list
saw in the September issue that
of all the survivixfi
drive-ins, I immediately checked for those
in the Central Kentucky area and was surprised
to find that the only one still operai
ing was the Sky-Vue outside Winchester
the first I ever attended, and one of (if not
the) first in the area. By the late '50s there
were six around Lexington, two of which
were first-run venues—not only for the
typical drive-in fare, but also major releases.
The Sky-Vue was always a second- or
third-run venue and it's [inspiring] that it
has outlasted not only Winchester's one
hard-top but all of Lexington's hard-tops
and drive-ins from the period as well.
Cordially,
