ABOUT HILLINGDON prevention and transport. Increasingly, local partners work together to ensure that all services are meeting the needs of the community. Key facts: • Hillingdon has 92 council-run schools, three main NHS hospitals, 11 underground stations, 20 community centres and 17 libraries within its borders. • The borough’s 100,000 households produce 90,000 tonnes of refuse each year and the council, together with local partners, is striving to increase the proportion of this waste that is recycled. • Over 12,000 students from over 110 countries study at Brunel University, in the borough. 4 HILLINGDON’S COMMUNITY STRATEGY 2005 - 2015 WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE
OUR CHALLENGES Our challenges Over the next ten years, Hillingdon will need to address key issues raised by the community, if it is to fulfil its potential and offer an exciting future to its residents. The changing face of the borough The population of Hillingdon will become more ethnically diverse, with a greater proportion of young people, over the next decade. We must adapt our services across the board to ensure that Hillingdon remains a strong and inclusive community. Sharing the benefits of prosperity Hillingdon is a reasonably prosperous place, but it has pockets of relative deprivation. We must ensure that every section of the community receives the same quality of service, be that healthcare, education or public safety. We must also strive to make the borough an affordable place to live for key workers such as teachers and nurses. The growth of Heathrow Heathrow is a massive employer throughout the region and it supports many local businesses. However, its expansion to include a fifth terminal and the proposed third runway will have a huge impact on Hillingdon’s transport network, environment and the quality of life for its residents. We need to share in Heathrow’s success, not be overpowered by it. Being more effective There is increasing pressure on the public sector to deliver ever-more effective and efficient local services. The best way for us to meet this challenge is through closer and smarter partnership working between all of Hillingdon’s public services. Keeping our identity People want to live in Hillingdon because of its unique character. As the pressure increases on London to expand over the next decade, Hillingdon must maintain its identity as an attractive and successful suburb, while still playing a full role in the vitality of the Capital.
