My Digital Studio Crash Course While I always take work to Powell, this year I had a very specific assignment for myself—learn My Digital Studio! This is a product we’ve carried for more than a year, a product I’m excited about and believe in . . . but am intimidated by! (Do I dare admit that?) I don’t know how many of you know this, but when it comes to modern technology, my knowledge is pretty much limited to where the “on” and “off” buttons are! I am definitely dependent on my techno-savvy children (especially my sonsin-law) and our Stampin’ Up! IT department! But I promised myself that this year, while I was captive at Powell, I would have Sara (one of several Stampin’ Up! My Digital Studio experts!) teach me everything she knew! Well . . . at least how to do more than turn the software on! (Which, by the way, I found out you don’t “turn on.” You “launch.”) sunny days pages (8" x 8") All products My Digital Studio . It’s so much easier than I imagined; I can’t believe I waited this long to begin my My Digital Studio adventure! I started by opening a photobook, then customizing the pages by switching out a flower for a fish and changing up the color palette. The changes are subtle and so simple, and in many instances, you don’t need to make any changes at all! But the beauty of My Digital Studio is that you can; all the tools and resources to create pages with templates or pages from scratch are right at your fingertips! While I’m a hands-on, stampand-pad traditionalist, and will likely always do some traditional scrapbook pages, I can definitely see My Digital Studio in my scrapbooking future as well! article continued... beauty all around you. The exhilaration that comes from a day spent in and on the water and the sigh of satisfaction when you settle down for an evening under a Powell night sky . . . I’ve never found those feelings anywhere else! Go On . . . Pop the Question It’s not as hard as you think You’re on one knee, holding out a red velvet ring box. Your heart is racing, your palms are sweating. You’re going for the big one: “Will you marry me? Er, I mean . . . will you be my downline member?” You open the box as you show your customer the sparkling diamond ring Independent Demonstrator Application. Want a little lesson in sociology? Don’t make something a bigger deal than it is. Asking someone’s hand in marriage? Yes, a big deal. Asking someone what she thinks about becoming a demonstrator? Not a biggie. Remember, you’re recruiting—not dating! Keep a healthy perspective when recruiting, and consider the sociology of it all; the scientific study of human behavior can teach you that you don’t need to get worked up over the little things in life, like having a conversation with a potential recruit. Putting Too Much Pressure on Yourself? Demonstrators often put too much pressure on themselves when recruiting. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the outcome and whether the potential recruit says “yes” (yippee!) or “no” (dramatic sigh). Our human nature leads us to take disappointment personally; we feel like we have been rejected, when really it was just the opportunity that was rejected. But just getting out there and talking with people by sharing your story and showing them how Stampin’ Up! could brighten their lives is success in and of itself. This abundant and continuous sharing is what will grow your business. Yeah, you’ll hear “no” and “I’m not interested” at times, but so what? That “no” might turn into a “yes” later on. And if it doesn’t, it’s not the end of the world. Loosen Up: Good for You & Your Potential Recruits When you realize that recruiting doesn’t have to be a big, dramatic deal, you realize you have nothing to lose. Keeping this light perspective makes it even easier to start those recruiting conversations. When you keep them casual, light, and friendly it’s not only better for you, but it’s also better for your potential recruit. They’ll feel more at ease and less threatened, which will make them more receptive to the conversation. So don’t be afraid of the “big question.” Remember your sociology lesson: keep your perspective on recruiting light, and you’ll live happily ever after, after all. Recruiting: Keeping It Light • Focus on the relationship—not the result. • Take a potential recruit out to coffee and get to know her better. • At a workshop, individually compliment your customers. • Share what you love about being a demonstrator with others one-on-one. • Tell your hostess to watch you at a workshop and think about whether that’s something she’d like to do. So what do you have to lose? Give it a shot and have a recruiting conversation. Talk with someone who’s expressed an interest, or who you think would really enjoy the demonstrator perks.
