responded to reports of police brutality by criticising the practices of the Austrian<br />

14.2. MAJOR DATA COLLECTION MECHANISMS ON<br />

Austria has not, as yet, established a comprehensive monitoring system for data<br />
collection on all incidents of racist violence. Instead, the authorities have a wellestablished<br />
data collection mechanism on racist violence connected to the activities<br />
of right-wing extremist groups.<br />
14.2.1. Official data<br />
Ministry of the Interior<br />
• Produces annual report on national security – focuses on perpetrators.<br />
• The Federal Agency for State Protection and Counter-Terrorism (Bundesamt<br />
für Verfassungschutz und Terrorismusbekämpfung –BVT): This agency, which<br />
is part of the Ministry of the Interior, publishes an annual report on the<br />
protection of the constitution. The report contains a chapter on right-wing<br />
extremist organisations and their activities, and includes relevant crime<br />
statistics.<br />
• The Registration Office regarding revitalization of neo-Nazi ideology, which is<br />
located at the Ministry of the Interior, collects information on illegal websites<br />
with right-wing extremist contents.<br />
• In addition, the Ministry of the Interior has two separate bodies which are<br />
responsible for monitoring the activities and conduct of the police and the<br />
public security services, including any discriminatory activity:<br />
• The Human Rights Advisory Board (Menschenrechtsbeirat - MRB): Situated in<br />
the Ministry of the Interior; established in 1999.<br />
• Office of Internal Affairs: A department of the Ministry of the Interior;<br />
operational since 2001. Primarily investigations criminal offences committed<br />
by an official in the course of his/her duties.<br />
