Claudette FEATURE REVIEWS Sfory Synopsis; Adiines for Newspaper and Programs THE STORY: "Too Young to Eiss" Although she is a talented pianist, June Allyson is unsuccessful in efforts to gain on interview with Van Johnson, a concert manager. Despite the pleas of Reporter Gig Young that she give up her career and marry him, June poses as a pigtailed 14-year-old, enters Johnson's auditions for children, and wins hands down. But to her dismay Johnson announces he is going to feature her as a new child prodigy in an extended concert tour. June has to keep up the hoax, but promises Gig she'll expose her impersonation after the first concert. Then, finding herself in love with Van, she decides to quit and marry Gig rather than hurt Johnson. Gig breaks the story of the hoax; Van offers to refund the concert audience's money; June scores a hit as her own adult self, and she and Van plan matrimony. Who Wasn't Too Young to Kiss. 51 "1 Clo. ©Cr THE STORY: "The Lavender Hill Mob" Alec Guinness, a highly respected but modestly paid Bank of England employe, supervises the gold deliveries from the refinery while secretly plotting to appropriate a million dollars in gold bars and live the rest of his life in luxury. He has a foolproof plan but no method of disposing of the gold until he meets Stanley Holloway, a manufacturer of souvenirs for tourists. Together, they hit on the scheme of melting down the bars and making miniature Eiffel Towers, which can be shipped to France. The plan succeeds but, in Paris, they discover that some of the miniatures have fallen into the hands of English schoolgirls. They track down all but one of the miniatures, which is given to a policeman. After a wild police chase, is captured Holloway but Guinness escapes to Brazil, where he lives lavishly until the law catches up with him. THE STORY: "Tom Brovi^n's School Days" In 1834, when Tom Brown (John Howard Davies) is sent to Rugby school at the age of 11, the English public school system is notoriously evil, but Doctor Arnold (Robert Newton), the Rugby headmaster, is zealously trying to bring about reforms. Tom quickly fits into school life until he offends an upper-class bully and is subjected to ear-twisting, blankettossing, and more fiendish tortures. However, Tom—true to schoolboy tradition—refuses to be a stool pigeon. At last Tom and two friends are involved in a swimming accident and the bully, giving a lying account of it, charges Tom with the responsibility; hovêver. THE STORY: "Slaughter Trail" In the 1880s in the New Mexico-Arizona territory. Gig Young leads a gang of bandits and stagecoach robbers. Their accomplice is Virginia Grey, who carries the stolen loot. After a holdup. Gig and his men shoot three Indians ând steal their horses. Brian Donlevy, commander of a U.S. army fort, sends a patrol out to find the killers. The stagecoach reaches the fort and Donlevy detains it there while beating down an Indian uprising. Young, anxious to obtain the loot, masquerades as a cattleman and goes to the fort. Meantime Virginia, beginning to repent her ways, refuses to go with Young after he has secured the stolen jewels from her. In a subsequent attack on the fort by the Navajos, Young and his henchmen are slain and peace restored. CATCHLINES: The Savage Drums Are Beating . Redskins Are Taking to the Warpath . 'IS Selk Talk- THE STORY: "Let's Make It Legal" After 20 years of marriage, Claudette Colbert and Macdonald Carey get a divorce but remain friendly. Their daughter, Barbara Bates, is married to Robert Wagner and lives with her mother despite the young husband's pleas that they need a home of their own. When Zachary Scott, millionaire industrialist and Claudatte's old flame, returns to town, Wagner sees a chance to renew the old romance and thus get his mother-in-law married off. Scott renews his courtship to Claudetts to Carey's dismay. He makes a bet with his ex-wife that Scott will never marry her and she accepts the challenge. She accepts Scott's proposal but an altercation with Carey leads to newspaper headlines and ruins Scott's chances of a Washington appointment. The young couple get a house of their own and Claudette is reunited with her ex-husband. CATCHLINES: As the Divorce Became Final, the Husband Wanted His Wife Back— In His Arms . There's Hotter Their THE STORY: "The Harlem Globe-Trotters" Abe Saperstein (Thomas Gomez) manages the Harlem Globe-Trolters, famous Negro basketball team that has been playing all over the country for 24 years. An AU-American honor student, Roy Townsend (Billy Brown), tries to join the team but is urged by Gomez to stay in college. Billy insists and soon after joining the team becomes a star. He does not show the right spirit of cooperation in following rigid rules for the team, however, and when he slips away to marry his sweetheart, Ann (Dorothy Dandridge), he injures his knee and fails to report it. As a consequence, he loses the next game for the team and because of his attitude, is fired by Gomez. Later he comes back chastened at a crucial moment and helps the team win. THE STORY: "Hot Lead" THE STORY: "Elephant Stampede" To gel inside information on train shipments of gold, a gang headed by John Dehner, plans to kill the telegrapher and substitute Ross Elliott, a convict about to be paroled, who was framed by Dehner for a robbery he did not commit. On his way to the job, Elliott is abducted by Dehner's mob, but the plan goes awry when Tim Holt and Richard Martin, cowpokes on a ranch owned by Joan Dixon, rescues Elliott. The latter reveals the plot and offers to play along with the crooks to capture them red-handed. Although skeptical, the sheriff consents. Apprised that a gold shipment is on the way, Dehner captures Joan as a hostage and takes Elliott with him to participate in the holdup. In time's nick Elliott holds Dehner at bay while Holt and Martin subdue the other bandits, the robbery is foiled and Joan rescued. CATCHLINES: Tim Holt Defies an Outlaw Ambush ... To Bring a Lawless Gang to Justice . . . With Death in His Trigger Finger . . . And Dynamite in His Fists ... In the Rugged, Roaring West. RK' Determined to hunt elephants for ivory in a restricted area in Africa, Myron Healey and John Kellogg kill their guide when he tries to stop them. Leonard Mudie, a game commissioner, becomes suspicious when Kellogg poses as the dead guide, and goes with them to a native village, where Edith Evanson, a missionary, and Donna Martell, her native house-girl, live. Bomba (Johnny Sheffield), the jungle boy, discovers the murdered guide's body, and Healey and Kellogg try unsuccessfully to kill him. Then Kellogg learns of a valuable cache of ivory and, double-crossing Healey, goes out alone to find it. Meantime Healey captures Bomba and plans to torture Donna to make her reveal where the ivory has been hidden. However, Kellogg slays Healey just as an elephant herd stampedes, frees Bomba and kills Kellogg. CATCHLINES: Fury Sweeps the Jungle ...
