3.6 Participation in exercise, recreation and sport Broader trends in participation in exercise, recreation and sport in Australia from the Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey data 5 presents the following key findings: ►► An estimated 8.2 million persons aged 15 years and over participated at least three times per week (regular participation rate), on average, in physical activity. This equates to 49.3 per cent of the population and represents a 12 per cent increase from 2001. ►► ►► ►► The top five exercise, recreation and sport activities most frequently participated in by Australians aged 15 years and over are walking, aerobics/fitness, swimming, cycling and running. 38.9 per cent of the population regularly participated in non-organised physical activity (at least 3 times a week). Females had higher regular participation rates in non-organised physical activity (42.5 per cent) than males (35.3 per cent). Findings of the Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey for the north coast region (which includes the Sunshine Coast) of Queensland, 2005-2008 indicate that: ►► ►► ►► ►► ►► ►► 52.8 per cent of persons aged 15 years and over in the north coast region of Queensland were ‘regular’ participants in exercise, recreation or sport, compared with 48.2 per cent for Queensland as a whole. The trend for ‘regular’ participation has generally been increasing from 44.6 per cent in 2005 to 52.8 per cent in 2008. A similar trend has occurred in Queensland, however at a slightly higher level. The trend for ‘frequent’ participation has also increased from 28.3 per cent in 2005 to 33.8 per cent in 2008. Females are more likely than males to be ‘regular’ participants across all age groups, in particular for the 45-54 year age group where 55.4 per cent of females were regular participants compared with 39.5 per cent of males. In 2008, 12 per cent of north coast persons aged 15 years and over ‘regularly’ participated in organised physical activity (i.e. three times or more per week) while 3.9 per cent ‘frequently’ participated in organised physical activity (i.e. five or more times per week). These rates are similar to Queensland as a whole (11.9 per cent and 4.2 per cent respectively). The top five activities in the north coast region in 2008 were the same as those for Queensland as a whole, namely walking, aerobics, swimming, cycling and running. 5 Australian Bureau of Statistics.
