Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Normally a 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in<br />
an Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences<br />
subject.<br />
English Language requirement:<br />
IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each<br />
component) or <strong>Swansea</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
recognised equivalent.<br />
How the degrees are structured<br />
The full-time course structure is split across<br />
the year with three modules offered in<br />
each academic semester (a total of six<br />
modules in Part One) and then a<br />
dissertation over the summer (Part Two).<br />
From the empire building of Alexander,<br />
the Caesars, and Rameses II, to the wit<br />
and wisdom of Aristotle, Plato, and<br />
Cicero, the ancient world has captivated<br />
us for thousands of years.<br />
Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology<br />
at <strong>Swansea</strong> <strong>University</strong> encompasses<br />
history and literature, archaeology and<br />
art, and philosophy and religion to shed<br />
light on the ancient civilisations that<br />
shaped our modern world.<br />
These degrees will:<br />
• equip you with skills relevant to careers<br />
in a wide variety of roles, including<br />
management, administration in the<br />
private and public sectors<br />
• provide you with a solid foundation for<br />
a rewarding career in teaching,<br />
heritage management, and museum<br />
work<br />
• help you to gain transferable skills,<br />
including team working, imaginative<br />
problem-solving, communication,<br />
presentation, and analytical skills<br />
• prepare you for a research degree<br />
Each scheme includes some compulsory<br />
modules, and the number is made up by<br />
choosing from a list of options. The<br />
dissertation component is written on a<br />
specialist research topic of your choosing.<br />
Part-time students normally take three<br />
modules in each of their two years<br />
(compulsory methodology modules in the<br />
first year) and write their dissertation in the<br />
third year.<br />
Modules deal with literary texts;<br />
documentary evidence; archaeological<br />
evidence; and the study of sexuality,<br />
religion and society. Students are required<br />
to study Greek or Latin, or Ancient<br />
Egyptian at an appropriate level.<br />
The purpose-built Egypt Centre on campus<br />
is an invaluable asset, housing around<br />
3,000 objects from Ancient Egypt. The<br />
collection illustrates more than 4,000<br />
years of human development, from the<br />
prehistoric to the early Christian era, and<br />
plays an integral role to teaching and<br />
research.<br />
Taught Courses<br />
The Department offers four taught MA<br />
schemes:<br />
studies the material culture and language<br />
of ancient Egypt. Compulsory modules<br />
include Understanding Ancient Egyptian<br />
Culture and Egyptian language.<br />
The MA Ancient History and Classical<br />
Civilisation studies the history, culture,<br />
and languages of the classical world.<br />
Compulsory modules include Research<br />
Methodologies in Ancient History and<br />
Classical Culture and either Ancient Greek<br />
or Latin. A wide range of optional modules<br />
is also available.<br />

Regular research seminars and lectures are<br />
run by the Research Institute for Arts and<br />
Humanities (RIAH), which students are<br />
encouraged to attend.<br />
Assessment<br />
Assessment is based on in-course written<br />
work and oral presentations, and a<br />
dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words.<br />
