Politics is a discipline that has explored<br />

different visions for a more just society for<br />

thousands of years, and as a result is able<br />

to address some of today’s most pressing<br />

challenges. Whether students have a<br />

strong interest in theory, the study of<br />

government and politics or international<br />

relationships it is a discipline that can<br />

sustain the highest standards of social<br />

science<br />

Politics, International Relations and<br />

Development Studies at <strong>Swansea</strong> asks the<br />

key research questions that we need to<br />

address to lead in the development of<br />

international scholarship. Current research<br />

includes cutting edge projects on issues<br />

such as ethnic groups and the new China,<br />

the politics of public health threats and the<br />

rise of cybercrime and cyber security. We<br />

welcome new proposals for postgraduate<br />

research projects that complement staff<br />

research interests.<br />

Research degrees in Politics and<br />

International Relations will:<br />

• equip you with skills relevant for a<br />

rewarding career in a range of diverse<br />

fields, including civil and intelligence<br />

services, local and national government,<br />

management, finance, teaching, and<br />

journalism<br />

Entry requirements:<br />

Normally a Master’s degree or a minimum<br />

2.1 Honours degree which has included<br />

research training appropriate for the<br />

proposed thesis project. Applicants are<br />

encouraged to contact the Department<br />

informally to discuss their proposals.<br />

English Language requirement:<br />

IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each<br />

component) or <strong>Swansea</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

recognised equivalent.<br />

Research Strengths<br />

Staff research interests cover three broad<br />

areas:<br />

• Political and cultural theory: This focuses<br />

on political theory and philosophy<br />

related to developments in globalisation,<br />

democracy, liberal culture, sovereignty,<br />

civil society, religion and new media<br />

technologies. Specialisms include;<br />

liberalism and its critics, human rights,<br />

continental political thought, poststructuralism;<br />

and theories of gender and<br />

masculinity<br />

• Political Analysis and Governance:<br />

This focuses on empirical studies of<br />

government, politics and public policy<br />

with a strong interest in theory and<br />

methods. Specialisms include;<br />

comparative politics, development<br />

politics, civic participation in Europe,<br />

the EU, Eastern Europe and political<br />

economy, American politics, UK politics,<br />

devolution and local government<br />

• International politics and inter-cultural<br />

communication: This focuses on the<br />

study of various dimensions of conflict,<br />

power and empire. Specialisms include;<br />

<strong>Postgraduate</strong><br />

Just War theory, security studies and<br />

terrorism, space policy, politics under<br />

Empire and in post-colonial states,<br />

post-conflict reconstruction, international<br />

drugs policy, conflict education, and<br />

civil wars and genocides. Area<br />

specialisms include; South-East Asia; the<br />

Middle East and Africa.<br />

Research Institute for Arts and Humanities<br />

The Research Institute for Arts and<br />

Humanities (RIAH) supports two major<br />

Research Centres, including the The<br />

Callaghan Centre for the Study of Conflict,<br />

Power, Empire, which produces worldclass<br />

research in the areas of conflict and<br />

security, empire and postcolonialism,<br />

‘digital’ war, and conflict and culture.<br />

RIAH also supports a wide range of<br />

research groups, which provide a focus<br />

for specialist projects, postgraduate<br />

research, grant applications, seminar<br />

series, and contact with external partners.<br />

Research groups include:<br />

• C-SCAP, the Centre for the Study of<br />

Culture and Politics<br />

• MEICAM, Modern European<br />

Ideologies, Conflict and Memory.<br />

• CECSAM, the Centre for the<br />

Comparative Study of the Americas<br />

All research students in Politics,<br />

International Relations and Development<br />

Studies belong to the Graduate Centre in<br />

the College of Arts and Humanities. The<br />

Centre provides pastoral as well as<br />

administrative support and is also<br />

responsible for research skills training<br />

and support, and facilitating a lively<br />

intellectual environment for the College’s<br />

postgraduate research community of<br />

200 students.<br />

All research students in Politics,<br />

International Relations and Development<br />

Studies also have access to the training<br />

resources of the Wales Economic and<br />

Social Research Council Doctoral<br />

Training Centre. Politics at <strong>Swansea</strong> is<br />

part of both the Politics and International<br />

Relations Pathway and the Language<br />

Based Area Studies pathway of the<br />

Doctoral Training Centre. Each year<br />

there is a programme of conferences and<br />

seminars organised in conjunction with<br />

Cardiff and Aberystwyth universities.<br />

attending seminars, reading groups, workshops and conferences – and<br />

also presenting my own PhD research to colleagues and staff. I was<br />

able to access most of the research material for my PhD in the Library;<br />
