the Caesars, and Rameses II, to the wit<br />

and wisdom of Aristotle, Plato, and<br />

Cicero, the ancient world has captivated<br />

us for thousands of years.<br />

Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology<br />

at <strong>Swansea</strong> <strong>University</strong> encompasses<br />

history and literature, archaeology and<br />

art, and philosophy and legend to shed<br />

light on the ancient civilisations that have<br />

shaped our modern world.<br />

The Department of History and Classics<br />

welcomes proposals for postgraduate<br />

research projects that complement staff<br />

research interests.<br />

Research degrees in Classics, Ancient<br />

History and Egyptology will:<br />

• provide you with new and specialised<br />

research skills<br />

• prepare you for a career in academic<br />

research and teaching<br />

• equip you with skills relevant for<br />

a rewarding career in a range of<br />

diverse fields<br />

Entry requirements:<br />

Normally a minimum of a 2.1 degree (or<br />

equivalent) in Classics, Ancient History,<br />

Egyptology, or related subject areas, or an<br />

appropriate Master’s degree.<br />

English Language requirement:<br />

IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each<br />

component) or <strong>Swansea</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

recognised equivalent.<br />

Graduates of the <strong>University</strong> of Wales<br />

in Classics may apply for the Ellen<br />

Thomas-Stanford Scholarship’s single<br />

annual award, normally of £250.<br />

The Centre for Egyptology and<br />

Mediterranean Archaeology<br />

The Centre undertakes research on<br />

ancient Egypt and the archaeology<br />

of the Mediterranean in classical antiquity,<br />

exploring the interplay between Egypt<br />

and the classical world.<br />

KYKNOS: Centre for Research<br />

in Ancient Narrative Literature<br />

KYKNOS (Greek for Swan) is a<br />

collaborative venture between the<br />

Universities of <strong>Swansea</strong> and Trinity Saint<br />

David’s (Lampeter). The Centre stimulates,<br />

coordinates, and promotes research on<br />

the narrative literatures of antiquity.<br />

Other facilities<br />

The purpose-built Egypt Centre on campus<br />

is an invaluable asset, housing around<br />

3,000 objects from Ancient Egypt. The<br />

collection illustrates more than 4,000<br />

years of human development, from the<br />

prehistoric to the early Christian era,<br />

and plays an integral role to teaching<br />

and research.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> library is particularly well<br />

stocked with original texts, literary and<br />

documentary, and subscribes to a<br />

wide range of general and specialist<br />

periodicals. Online access to external<br />

bibliographies and citation indexes is<br />

available. Resources include: JSTOR,<br />

Dyabola, TLG, Patrologia Latina and<br />

Teubner Latin texts online, and the<br />

Gnomon database.<br />

All research students in Classics, Ancient<br />

History and Egyptology belong to the<br />

Graduate Centre in the College of Arts<br />

and Humanities. The Centre provides<br />

pastoral as well as administrative support<br />

and is also responsible for research skills<br />

training and support, and facilitating a<br />

lively intellectual environment for the<br />

College’s postgraduate research<br />

community of 200 students.<br />
