This would be viewed as pre-clinical<br />

mechanism of ensuring that students have<br />

adequate academic skills for Master’s level<br />

MSc Advanced Practice in Health Care<br />

– Infection Control Option (part-time)<br />

This taught Master’s degree was<br />

developed in conjunction with the NHS<br />

and is designed to equip healthcare<br />

professionals with the skills to lead<br />

innovative infection control practice.<br />

Students will learn how to approach the<br />

subject critically, evaluating and promoting<br />

progressive practices and sound patient<br />

care in their workplace.<br />

Modules to be taken include:<br />

• Infection Control Theory<br />

• Clinical Decision Making<br />

• Advanced Practice: Management<br />

and Leadership<br />

• Infection Control Strategy, Policy<br />

and Practice<br />

• Advanced Practice and Education<br />

This course is aimed at qualified healthcare<br />

professionals who work with infection risks<br />

and communicable diseases, as well as<br />

those who would like to widen their<br />

knowledge and develop their practice in<br />

infection control and public health.<br />

This course is taught at the St David’s Park<br />

campus in Carmarthen.<br />

Normally a relevant Honours degree (2.2<br />

or above) and<br />

evidence of recent academic study, OR at<br />

least two years’ experience as a first level<br />

healthcare professional. Applicants also<br />

need to be registered as first level<br />

healthcare professionals with possession of<br />

a good professional portfolio. Please note<br />

that because of the clinical nature of this<br />

course, applicants will need to be working<br />

in clinical practice and the support of their<br />

manager is essential.<br />

MSc Chronic Conditions Management<br />

(full-time or part-time)<br />

The increasing burden of chronic illness is<br />

one of the greatest challenges facing<br />

health systems globally. These conditions<br />

can have profound and far reaching<br />

implications on all aspects of peoples’<br />

lives and can present patients (and<br />

families) with a spectrum of needs. Indeed,<br />

people living with a chronic condition<br />

require support, care and rehabilitation<br />

from a wide range of people in health,<br />

social and voluntary care sectors. In<br />

addition, effective health promotion,<br />

prevention, self-care and self-management<br />

will help ensure that chronic illnesses are<br />

avoided wherever possible and that<br />

people are more informed to safely and<br />

effectively manage their health and well<br />

being. This requires complex responses<br />

over extended periods of time,<br />

coordinated, proactive and collaborative<br />

input from the health, social care and<br />

voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay<br />

personnel (as in the Expert Patient<br />

Programme).<br />

MSc Enhanced Professional Practice<br />

(part-time only) – Work Based Learning<br />

The MSc Enhanced Professional Practice is<br />

an academic award developed to enable<br />

health and social care professionals<br />

undertaking work-based learning and<br />

practice development to gain academic<br />

credit for their learning. Work-based<br />

learning values learning which takes place<br />

outside of an educational institution and<br />

integrates practice with theory. This is a<br />

work-based modular <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Degree<br />

which will be assessed by portfolio and a<br />

reflective narrative.<br />

This is a flexible programme and students<br />

can study up to 30 credits from the taught<br />

modules within the College’s module,<br />

post-registration and postgraduate<br />

prospectus if they wish. For the workbased<br />

modules students will, in<br />

conjunction with a practice facilitator and<br />

the programme manager, develop<br />

learning contracts which will be aimed at<br />

meeting the learning requirements for the<br />

module and practice development needs<br />

in their practice areas.<br />

Starting your professional practice is the<br />

only taught module delivered at <strong>Swansea</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> campus. The other modules are<br />

all work-based.<br />

This programme is also available to study<br />

as a postgraduate diploma or<br />

postgraduate certificate.<br />

All applicants need to be employed in<br />

the health or social care sector. An<br />

appropriate degree or equivalent from an<br />

approved institution<br />

(preferably 2.2 or above) and evidence<br />

of recent academic study is required, or<br />

evidence of undertaking continuous<br />

professional development, with at least<br />

two years experience, and possession of<br />

a good and relevant professional<br />

Designed to meet the management<br />

development needs of a modern health<br />

care system, this course attracts students<br />

from overseas as well as the UK. The<br />

course is provided in a research-based<br />

environment that engages students to<br />

learn and develop as health care<br />

managers.<br />

People working in healthcare<br />

management, and health and social care,<br />

wishing to develop and update their<br />

practice and those interested in entering<br />

the healthcare sector in a management<br />

capacity, will benefit from this<br />

programme.<br />

The course aims to enhance their skills<br />

and knowledge by teaching them to:<br />

• Plan and deliver service improvements<br />

• Work with others to achieve<br />

organisational goals<br />

The MSc Health Care Management was<br />

revised in 2011. There are six<br />

MSc Public Health and Health Promotion<br />

(full-time or part-time)<br />

Designed to provide an understanding of<br />

the theoretical underpinnings of public<br />

health and health promotion, this<br />

programme enables students to<br />

experience health promotion in practice,<br />

gain theoretical knowledge and apply it<br />

to practice – facilitating both their<br />

personal and professional development. It<br />

develops the students’ ability to provide<br />

others with health information and the<br />

support necessary to achieve change and<br />

to influence health policy at all levels.<br />

This programme is designed to meet the<br />

needs of health promotion practitioners at<br />

Level Five and above and the developing<br />

public health agenda. The course is<br />

mapped to the National Occupational<br />

Standards for the Practice of Public Health<br />

and the Public Health Career Framework<br />

competences.<br />

practitioners. New graduates and<br />

international students are welcome to apply.<br />
