CHEN CLAN ACADEMY<br />

The Chen Clan Academy was built <strong>in</strong> 1890 dur<strong>in</strong>g the Q<strong>in</strong>g Dynasty. It is one<br />
of the scarce clan ancestral temples <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

DR.SUN YAT-SEN'S MEMORIAL HALL<br />

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is one of the most symbolic<br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Guangzhou. It is a major site for great convention and<br />
performance as well as a tourist attraction for both Ch<strong>in</strong>ese and<br />
overseas visitors.<br />
Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866 - 1925) was a revolutionary political leader<br />
who played a key role <strong>in</strong> overthrow<strong>in</strong>g the Q<strong>in</strong>g Dynasty. He is<br />
regarded as the Father of Modern Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
SHANGXIAJIU WALKING STREET<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce Shangxiajiu road opened as the first bus<strong>in</strong>ess street of Guangzhou <strong>in</strong><br />
September, 1995, this pedestrian shopp<strong>in</strong>g street has ranked the first among others<br />
<strong>in</strong> Guangzhou for its length of more than 1200 meters and its more than 300 shops.<br />
In the later part of the Q<strong>in</strong>g Dynasty (1644-1911), a man named Chen<br />
achieved the third place <strong>in</strong> the highest imperial exam<strong>in</strong>ation and was given<br />
a dist<strong>in</strong>guished office title which made the Family Chen well-known. Many<br />
years later someone suggested that all the Chen's families raise money<br />
to build a temple to pay respects to the ancestors and encourage their<br />
offspr<strong>in</strong>g to study hard. Therefore, the temple was f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong> 1894 with the<br />
money donated by Chen's families <strong>in</strong> 72 counties of Guangdong Prov<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
as well as some overseas family members.<br />
The most impressive attractions <strong>in</strong> the temple are various superb carv<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
that reflect the beauty of nature. They are made from a variety of materials<br />
such as wood, brick, pottery, stone, and limestone.<br />
This shopp<strong>in</strong>g area had developed<br />
its own bus<strong>in</strong>ess culture "the Western<br />
Guan Culture". It is a showcase of<br />
traditional Cantonese architecture, and<br />
is especially pretty at night when lit up.<br />
All the shops here are Qilou or sotto<br />
porticos (a build<strong>in</strong>g structure of South-<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a's construction style), which<br />
make the open market weatherproof.<br />
HUANGPU MILITARY ACADEMY<br />

The Huangpu Military Academy, also called Army Military College, was<br />
set up <strong>in</strong> 1924 by Sun Yat-sen with the aim of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g military officials for<br />
revolution.<br />
From 1924 to 1927, Huangpu Military Academy offered four terms of study<br />
to 4,981 students. Those graduates took the lead to form the revolutionary<br />
army and took part <strong>in</strong> the battle for unify<strong>in</strong>g Guangzhou and the Northern<br />
Expedition War.
