Recent Brazilian <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Care</strong> System Timel<strong>in</strong>e<br />
1988 Approval <strong>of</strong> the new National Constitution, which created the Brazilian Unified <strong>Health</strong><br />
System (SUS). In the constitution, health is def<strong>in</strong>ed as a right <strong>of</strong> all citizens and an obligation<br />
from the state.<br />
1998 Def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>of</strong> criteria for resource allocation from the federal government to states and<br />
municipalities.<br />
1998 Law 9.656/98 regulates private health care plans.<br />
1999 Creation <strong>of</strong> the National Agency for <strong>Health</strong> Surveillance (ANVISA), responsible for the<br />
registration <strong>of</strong> new drugs.<br />
2000 Approval <strong>of</strong> the Constitutional Amendment number 29 that def<strong>in</strong>es the percentage <strong>of</strong><br />
budgets from the federal, state and municipal level that should be allocated to health care.<br />
2000 Creation <strong>of</strong> the National Agency for Supplementary <strong>Health</strong> (ANS) that regulates the private<br />
health care system <strong>in</strong> Brazil.<br />
2003 Creation <strong>of</strong> the Chamber for Regulation <strong>of</strong> the Pharmaceutical Market (CMED), responsible<br />
for the pric<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> new drugs.<br />
2004 National Agenda <strong>of</strong> Priorities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Research -‐ for the 2nd National Conference on<br />
Science, Technology, and Innovation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />
2006 Creation <strong>of</strong> the National Commission for Technology Incorporation <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
(CITEC).<br />
2008 Creation <strong>of</strong> the Brazilian Network <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Technology Assessment (REBRATS).<br />
