its position as Australia’s pre-eminent
learning and teaching institution,
a clear acknowledgement of the
enormous depth and breadth in the
performance of its teaching staff and
the great pleasure they take in engaging
with high-quality undergraduate and
postgraduate students.
In 2011 Melbourne will still be the
strongest research university in
Australia, capacity and outreach
enhanced by two or three new institutes
in emerging areas of cross-disciplinary
Melbourne strengths – areas such
as material sciences, sustainability,
immunology, Middle Eastern and
Asian interaction.
We will know we are on track in 2011
if we have maintained our national
leadership on research higher degree
completion, load and research training
scheme funding, and if we are the
University of choice for the brightest
local and international research higher
degree candidates.
By 2011 knowledge transfer will be
a familiar part of all the University’s
work. Students will expect to be
involved in volunteer work and
for-credit placements, including
international exchanges.
This broader involvement will be
reflected on their transcripts, to produce
a more complete record of such
opportunities within and beyond the
classroom while at Melbourne.
Melbourne will have built a profile for
knowledge transfer – and wider public
engagement – by becoming prominent
in tackling one or two major national
or regional issues, with business and
community support, in a way that only
the University, with its disciplinary
strengths, can do. Melbourne will be
widely seen as a valued leader and
contributor to high-level thought and
debate in the community.
And Melbourne will be more involved in
the world of industry and business, as
investment in commercialisation brings
expanded opportunities for knowledge
and technical transfer.
In 2011 philanthropic income will play
a larger role in University finances,
reducing reliance on public funding,
and providing more scholarships for
students regardless of their financial
circumstances, more opportunity to
fund the long-term capital works the
University needs.
The foundations for realising this vision
of the University in 2011 are in place,
or being set down through decisions to
be taken in 2007. Each of the elements
is achievable.
In 2011, Melbourne will offer a standard
of education, excellence in research and
broader engagement consistent with
this University being one of the finest
in the world.
