statutory reporting/ Statutory Reporting 1. Environmental Sustainability The University of Melbourne is committed to improving environmental sustainability, both through its role as an educational institution and as one of the largest public organisations in Victoria. University Environmental Policy Throughout 2006 the University continued to implement the University Environmental Policy. The principal environmental challenges recognised in the policy include improved efficiency of resource use, minimising waste generation and reducing discharges to the environment from University activities. Ongoing sustainability activities undertaken during 2006 included: • Recycling programs for office waste, cardboard, aluminium, toner cartridges, batteries, overhead transparencies and CDs. • Hazardous waste collection with recycling of the hazardous waste, or if necessary, disposal in accordance with Environment Protection Authority requirements. • Purchase of green energy electricity sourced from renewable generators. • Engagement of all faculties and divisions of the University in achieving the goals of the Environmental Policy, strategic objectives and legislative compliance. • The University’s Environmental Advisory Committee established sustainability objectives and targets for 2006. Significant achievements in meeting the objectives and targets are summarised in Table 1. Talloires Declaration As a signatory to the internationallyrecognised Talloires Declaration: University Presidents for a Sustainable Future, the University again reported against its obligations under the Declaration’s Ten Point Plan. Establish environment web site publicising the University’s recycling streams Achievement A major review of trade waste arrangements was undertaken for the Parkville campus. New trade waste applications with improved monitoring arrangements were implemented. A MSDS management system was established. Inventories for laboratory chemicals were progressively added to the system throughout the year. A Computer and Polystyrene Recycling Program was established and implemented. A new dedicated web page for publicising the University’s recycling streams was established as part of EHS web site. 5. Reduction of energy use An extensive energy audit was conducted. The energy audit identified potential energy consumption savings that can be made and which will reduce CO 2 emissions. 6. Reduction in water use Achieved 34 percent reduction in water consumption at Parkville campus during 2006, compared to 2004 consumption. A draft Sustainability Strategic Plan for 2007-2010 was developed in 2006 and is scheduled for consultation, endorsement and publication during 2007. activities which support environmentally responsible citizenship across the University, the wider community and internationally. Environmental Management System (EMS) The University’s EMS, encompassing the Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Manual, was subject to a major review in 2005. Further revision of the EHS Manual procedures are discussed in the Statement on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) on p 77 of this report. Regulatory Activity • There was no regulatory activity from the Environment Protection Authority Victoria or any other environmental regulator during 2006. External Environmental Management System (EMS) Audits • Lloyds Register Quality Assurance conducted a surveillance audit in April and May 2006 to verify that the University’s EMS conforms to the requirements of the ISO14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard. The University’s ISO 14001:2004 certification demonstrates the University’s commitment to environmentally sustainable operations. The audit noted one major nonconformance resulting from inconsistent trade waste monitoring throughout the University’s Parkville campus and sampling of emissions at the Werribee campus. Corrective actions to date have resulted in its downgrading to a minor non-conformance. Further corrective action is in progress. The one minor non-conformance noted was remedied during the year.
