6. Statement On Occupational
Health and Safety
(OHS) Matters
The University has a broad OHS
risk profile, including specific risks
associated with laboratory operations,
workshop operations, chemical storage
handling and use, radiation sources and
biological agents.
The University’s OHS Policy requires
the university to take all reasonable
precautions to provide and maintain, so
far as is practicable, an environment that
is safe and without risks to health for
employees, students and visitors.
The University OHS strategic plan 2004-
2006 set OHS goals by detailing nine
strategic objectives. Table two (p 77)
details significant achievements during
2006 towards meeting these objectives.
A draft OHS strategic plan for 2007-
2010 developed in 2006 is scheduled
for consultation, endorsement and
publication during 2007.
Occupational Health and Safety
Management System (OHSMS)
The University’s OHSMS encompassing
the Environmental Health and Safety
(EHS) Manual was subject to a major
review in 2005. Revision of the EHS
Manual procedures continued
during 2006.
New or revised procedures published
in the EHS Manual in 2006 include EHS
Risk Management, EHS Procedure
Writing and EHS Incident Reporting
& Investigation:
New or revised health and safety
procedures developed during
2006 include:
Emergency Preparedness Response,
First Aid, and EHSMS Audit Procedure.
These procedures are awaiting
endorsement by the Risk Management
Committee prior to publication in the
EHS Manual.
Environment Health and Safety
Unit Resources
During 2006 EHS advisers commenced
providing services to faculties and
budget divisions for all EHS matters,
rather than, as previously, having
responsibility for particular hazard types
across the University. The employment
of two additional EHS Advisers and one
additional EHS Manager has facilitated
an improved level of service.
