out of 1.43 million hectares). East Asia reported 33 percent protective forests, a large<br />

proportion of which (60 million out of 83 million hectares) is accounted for by China.<br />

In Western and Central Asia, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are mainly<br />

responsible for the high proportion of forests with a protective function. The Russian<br />

Federation accounts for 71 million out of the 93 million hectares of protective forests<br />

reported in Europe, and Brazil makes up much of the protective forests in South<br />

America (43 million out of 59 million hectares). In Africa, almost half of the protective
