Addison Food Pantry Update
Our Food Pantry is experiencing a need for FOOD AND FUNDS. The food we order through the Food
Bank of the Southern Tier must be paid for by us. It is not given to us free of charge. The Advisory Board
also purchases food through the local markets. We will be able to exist until the fi rst of the year (when we
should get the rest of our HPNAP grant-which will sustain us for another two (2) months).
You may have received an appeal from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, if you give to them, our Pantry
does not receive a direct benefi t from your donation.
To date the Pantry has distributed 12,359 pounds of food at a substantial cost.
Greenwood Historical Society
November Meeting
ICELAND- “Land of Fire and Ice” is the program for the
Greenwood Historical Society’s November 1st meeting to
be held in the Social Hall of the United Methodist Church
at 7 p.m. Visitors to Iceland 3 times, John and Sue Babbitt
will present this land of amazing contrasts--from hot springs
to geysers, mud pots to fault lines--through their wonderful
pictures of the country. Today Iceland is one of the most
volcanically active spots on earth, giving geoscientists a
chance to observe a land still in the making.
Impressed with the friendliness of the people, with the
cleanliness of the country, and with the many pictuesque
scenes of farms, homes, churches, and small coastal villages,
the Babbitts invite members and guests to journey with them
into the North Atlantic to see puffins, arctic tern, lighthouses,
waterfalls, a geothermal plant, the rift valley, greenhouse
operations, and numerous views of the spectacular scenery.
Plan to attend and enjoy an armchair adventure! All
are welcome. Refreshments served following the program.
Make a Difference Day
A National Day to Help Others
Make a Difference Day is one of the nation’s most
popular days of volunteering. It is celebrated every
year on the fourth Saturday of October; this year, it
will be celebrated on October 27. USA Weekend
Magazine, Points of Light, and Newman’s Own
along with celebrities such as Kevin Bacon, have
sponsored and advocated for this national event to
rally millions to help change the world. On this day,
people lend a helping hand in their communities.
Volunteers truly make an impact! Over eighty
percent of New York residents surveyed in a recent
poll felt that volunteering is important. Volunteers
help organizations provide more quality care to individuals
and communities. It is estimated that one
hour of volunteer time is worth $21.79. Volunteers
are needed and valued everywhere!
Summer’s Tears
Autumn’s drying Summer’s tears
As Summer bids goodbye
To all the season’s pleasant joys
That brought us such delight.
The concerts in the hometown park
Where folks all gathered ‘round
To hear the stirring music played..
The marches, waltzing sounds.
The picnics near the water’s edge,
The swimming, boating, too;
The hikes upon the mountain trails
Where Nature was in bloom.
Bicycling down a country road,
Visiting county fairs;
Smelling fl owers in gardenland
Where birdsong fi lled the air.
But down the corridor of days,
Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, a nonprofi t Christian relief and evangelism
organization founded by Franklin Graham. Our church in South Canisteo became involved with the project
several years ago and loved it so much that we eventually expanded our role to become a Regional Relay
Center. We collect and process shoeboxes and deliver them to the Regional Collection Center in Big Flats.
This service shortens the distance folks have to drive to deliver their shoeboxes as well as saving the Big
Flats center the needed processing work. We have really enjoyed our role with Operation Christmas Child
and hope to have your help.
This is not a Methodist project or even one of the South Canisteo Church’s project. Operation Christmas
child is a nondenominational Christian project which can be experienced by any believer.
Collection dates at the South Canisteo Regiona Relay Center will be November 12th-19th, 2012. Our hours
will be Monday 12th - 7-8 p.m., Tuesday 13th - 7-8 p.m., Wednesday 14th - 1:30-3:30 P.M., Thursday 15th - 6-8
p.m., Friday 16th - 1:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday 17th - 10:00 a.m. to noon and 6-8 p.m., Sunday 18th - 12:30-
(10/21/12) We had the pleasure of having Lisa Karr, a missionary to Ethiopia, with us last Sunday. There
are 24 languages in Ethiopia who don’t have a Bible in their languages. The seat of Ethiopia is Addis
and has poverty, grueling labor and tension. Lisa said that it is a blessing to be able to talk about God in
their schools. Some have asked her why she gave up a good paying job and go as a volunteer to Ethiopia
as a missionary. Are you a follower of Jesus or a fan of Jesus? Lisa is a follower because she answered
His call to be a missionary to a place where they are starved for God’s word. The blessings outweigh the
sacrifi ces. There is extreme poverty there and she wants to help everybody but can’t. She works with a
select few, the Strong Hearts, doing street ministry. In the leper colony, people are outcasts, not whole and
not accepted by society. Here teenage boys pick through garbage to fi nd recyclables to sell. People are
still people. No matter where you are there are homeless and poor. Have you ever felt God’s nudging you
to leave your comfort zone? You can be a missionary without leaving your home; the workplace, school, or
your neighborhood. The Lord sees people differently than we do. We look at the outside and He looks at
the heart. Lisa told of prostitutes and how one in particular told her she was beautiful. All women want to
be seen as beautiful. The prostitute is no different than all women. We all want to be told we are beautiful.
Remember that God wants us all to be missionaries and see others as He does. Our services are at 9:30
and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday.
Cold Waters Move In; Boaters Step Up Safety Fall
Fishing and Boating Safety Tips
It’s hard being a boater in the fall. Most of your friends on the water are gone,
the days shorter, the waters colder. However, the lack of crowds or better wind in
the sails is still appealing to many boaters, anglers and sailors, but safety must
be stepped up, says the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water.
What makes the risk go up and what can you do? Here’s fi ve ways you can easily
get in trouble this time of the year.
Sunshine isn’t your friend: Don’t let sunny days deceive you – while it may be
T-shirt weather in the morning at the launch ramp or dock, weather can change
quickly this time of year. Bring extra clothing to dress in layers and always bring
foul weather gear.
Float your plan: The fi shing hole or raft-up spot crowds may be gone, but that
also means your closest potential rescuers are also long gone. A simple sharing
of your fl oat plan with family members or friends letting them know where
you’re going and when you will be back could save valuable time in locating you
if something happens.
Murphy likes you: Does your boat have any lingering maintenance issues? This
isn’t the time of the year to find out.
Ensure any problems – engine, fuel, charging systems, or safety issues such
as navigation lights – are fi xed before you go.
I’ve fallen and I can’t get up: A simple fall overboard can kill this time of year.
Hypothermia is a real threat. By wearing your life jacket, if you do fi nd yourself
accidentally over the side you will fl oat and have time to get back aboard, preferably
with a knotted or looped rope attached to the gunnel or ladder that be reached from the water. If you’d
like to see just how hard it is to get back in a boat, go to www.BoatUS.com/foundation/boardingladders.
Don’t leave without me: If you are alone and fall out, will the boat keep going? It won’t run away if you had
your engine cut-off lanyard attached to you or use another type of shutdown device.
Dear Editor
Forgiven
Here’s another silent season assuring individual development,
Thoughts of reflection is winter’s task, falls never last.
Spring forwards soon enough after contemplating the year,
Summer’s what counts remembering what’s true will prove.
Impressions formed from foiling false narrators folly.
Encourages faith in following righteously, honoring patiently,
Awaiting God’s consequences in determining tomorrow realities,
Wars have always been won by efforts trusting in him.
Waiting’s easier knowing your on the side doing their best,
Learning’s diffi cult but sooner’s better and less apt to failing again.
Life’s a series of seasons repeating til we get um fi nally fi gured out.
Goods got glamour not for ourselves sake, evil has fame rarely alone
but later it’s over if nothing’s grown.
Lessons learned aren’t necessary to repeat including the ones discovered to be overwhelmingly manipulative,
forming skepticisms a powerful positive, however revealing childrens Santa’s early doesn’t teach
objectivity automatically.
A famous American quotation of Daniel Webster
without comment:
“If we and our posterity reject religious instruction and
authority, violate the rules of eternal justice, trifl e with
the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the
political constitution which holds us together, no man
can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm
us, that shall bury all our glory in profound obscurity.”
Venison Donation Program
Did you know that one deer provides approximately
160 servings of highly nutritious ground venison to
those in need?
The Venison Donation Program partners with the
Food Bank of the Southern Tier to help those in need.
Legally tagged and properly fi eld-dressed deer can
be taken to participating processors at NO COST TO
THE HUNTER.
Hunters must call ahead for FREE processing of
any deer they wish to donate. The venison is then
processed and packaged according to the law and
picked up by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier for
distribution to neighbors in need through a network
of hunger-relief member agencies like soup kitchens
and food pantries.
How to Donate a Deer to the Hungry:
1. The list of Participating Processors can be found on
the Food Bank’s website under ‘Donate Now’.
2. Join thousands of New York State hunters and
make a commitment to donate your deer to the hungry.
3. Bring your legally tagged and properly field-dressed
deer to the processor. There is no cost to you!
About the Venison Donation Program:
• Hunters do not have to pay for processing the deer
they donate. Processing costs are covered by donations
from the public and through state funding.
• Since 1999, more than 413 tons of highly nutritious
venison have been distributed in New York State
through similar programs. This equals 3,308,568
meals served to those in need.
• For the 2012 season, if one out of our every 100 deer
is donated, the program could easily reach 100,000
pounds of venison to feed the hungry.
In 2011, 7,429 pounds of venison was donated to the
Food Bank of the Southern Tier!
Each week, over 11,000 individuals visit a hungerrelief
member agency served by the Food Bank of
the Southern Tier. In 2011, the Food Bank distributed
nearly 7.5 million pounds of food to neighbors in need
across the six Southern Tier counties of Broome,
Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins.
To learn more about how you can make a difference in
the fight against hunger, visit the Food Bank’s website
Forgiveness
Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will
forgive you (Luke 6:37). There are many verses in the Bible like this one that tell us that we should forgive those who have offended
or insulted us in one way or another. Often, relationships between families and friends have been destroyed because of the hardening
of the heart and the refusal to forgive others for something that they may have said or done. Because we are close to our loved ones,
we may feel that we can say things to them that we would never say to others. Although the spirit of forgiveness is not always easy,
forgiveness is usually more important to those who have been offended than to those who have caused the offense. Quite often, a
person may not even realize that they have said or done something that disturbs us, and frequently a person’s words or actions may
simply be misinterpreted. Forgiving others as God forgives us is necessary in order to live our lives as our Heavenly Father requires.
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any Man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Simple Tips And Smart Tools For Easy Budgeting
(NAPSA)-From summer travel to back-to-school season, many Americans find it challenging to budget for special purchases.
Thinking of your next big purchase or just wanting to better manage your everyday spending? Here are five tips to help you stick to a budget:
1. Set priorities-Map out your basic needs and go from there. If you commute 10 miles to work, having money for gas is much more important than, say,
a premium cable TV package. But once you set your priorities, re-evaluate them every couple of weeks.
2. Reduce, don’t deprive-Part of any budget is managing the everyday luxuries-from a favorite magazine to the occasional night out. It’s important to set
a budget for these purchases based on what you can afford, but don’t deprive yourself. We’re all human-and completely cutting out simple pleasures
like these can set you up for failure.
3. Track progress-Regularly measure how things are going. It helps you understand where you need to make adjustments and can give you a sense
of gratification when you’re staying on track. If it’s your first time making a budget, don’t be surprised if you fall short of your goals-like with anything,
practice makes perfect.
4. Think DIY-One of the easiest ways to save money is to take a “do-it-yourself” approach to things you enjoy. Think long term: If you are a coffee lover,
upgrading your in-home equipment may come with costs, but it can save you money in the long run to make those lattes at home instead of paying $4
a cup at the coffee shop.
5. Budget and manage your money smartly-Find a way to manage your money in a way that works for you. While some consumers keep cash budgeted
for restaurants, movies and other fun activities in separate envelopes each month, there are also more secure options available-from savings accounts
with automatic contributions each month or reloadable prepaid cards that ensure you don’t spend more than you have.
You Can Make Your Next Road
Trip More Comfortable-And Stress
Free
(NAPSA)-Whether you’re driving across town or
across the country, here are some tips to keep you
on the road to safety and savings and help you get
the most out of your trip.
Cool Ways to Save on Gas
Gas prices may move up and down but the desire to
save money never changes. That said, don’t sweat
the AC; trying to save money by turning off the air
conditioner doesn’t save gas and opening the windows
actually uses more gas by decreasing aerodynamics.
Similarly, don’t throw money away on premium octane
in the hopes that it contains special detergents or will
improve performance. The EPA requires that all gas
include detergents and, generally, only sports cars
require premium gasoline. For best mileage, stick with
your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended fuel-your
wallet will thank you.
Put it in “Park”
For some people, hitting the open road with a full
tank of gas is a uniquely liberating feeling. However,
coming upon an unexpected road closure or gridlock
Lost Dog
My name is Douggie. I am missing from my
home. I am a German Shepard/Wolf mix, 13
years old. I have light blue eyes, a lazy right
ear, and bad hips. I was last seen on 10/19/12
at 11:30 pm on Cty. Rt. 5 between Hamilton
Rd. and Sullivan Rd. If you see or find me
please call Jamie Ribble at 607-359-3481.
can kill an adventurous mood quickly.
The good news is that you can use technology-such as a GPS device-to plan the best route in advance and
fi nd places to stop and stretch your legs along the way.
Developed in the early 1970s, the Global Positioning System, or GPS, is a satellite navigation system that
provides location and time information.
Using a GPS can help you take the road less traveled, and stopping at state parks and hiking trails can keep
your legs-and brain-from going numb.
Save the “Jams” for Later
Take a car fi lled with kids and a dog, add in a traffi c jam and a chorus of “Are we there yet?” and you have
a recipe for what can be a very long afternoon.
Fortunately, you can save yourself time and stress by avoiding traffi c tie-ups altogether. Navigation devices_
can be beneficial for avoiding traffic. For instance, TomTom’s GO LIVE devices feature real-time traffic, which
automatically reroutes you away from congestion.
A Plan for the Worst
If you have a roadside emergency, the right device can help you turn lemons into lemonade. For example, a
GPS device can pinpoint your exact location. You can tell emergency services exactly where you are, even
if you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.
To learn more or view live traffi c information, visit www.tomtom.com/traffic.
If you have a roadside emergency, the right device can help you turn lemons into lemonade. For example,
a GPS device can pinpoint your exact location if your car breaks down.
School Bus Safety Tips School buses
are designed to be safer than other vehicles
(NAPSA)-More than 26 million children ride the school bus every day. According to the U.S. Department
of Transportation, school buses are the safest form of transportation for getting children to and from school,
with most serious school bus incidents taking place when children are outside of the bus.
According to the same study, 75 percent of these incidents involve children under the age of 9. To help reduce
these incidents, IC Bus, a subsidiary of Navistar, has developed the Safety PASS, four simple safety tips for
parents to discuss with their children before they get on the school bus.
To “earn” a safety PASS, passengers should:
Pause-Wait to use headphones, cell phones and MP3 players until you’re a safe distance from the bus.
be Aware-Consider your surroundings and remain alert so you are not distracted when a bus is approaching
or departing.
Signal-Watch for the driver’s signal before crossing and always cross 12 feet in front of the bus.
Sit-Remain seated while you are on the bus and keep your voice down so the bus driver can concentrate
on the road.
For the past 10 years, IC Bus has been the No. 1 bus manufacturer, designing and manufacturing vehicles
with student safety as the primary goal.
School buses are designed to be safer than other passenger vehicles in avoiding crashes and preventing
injury. In fact, students in the U.S. are nearly eight times safer riding in a school bus than in a car with a parent
or guardian.
Yellow school buses offer a unique combination of safety features, including:
• Strong construction techniques such as reinforced sides, roofs and rear ends;
• Passenger safety devices, including cross-view mirrors and walk gates that enhance the visibility of the
students outside the bus;
• Traffi c control devices such as the fl ashing warning lights and stop arms.
Third Grade News from Mrs. Dreher’s Room
We read a story in our reading book that was about life during the
Great Depression when Babe Ruth played for the Yankees. The
children were very interested in the time period and several of them
interviewed their “oldest” family member to learn more. Justin
Vitale’s Great-Grandma was a young child in Patterson, NJ. She
talked about things very unusual to today. An ice man delivered ice
to their home for the ice box. Her childhood chores were to empty
the pan that collected the ice melt and carry coal for their heat
source. People lost their jobs and stood in bread lines. When kid’s
shoes wore out they were patched with cardboard. Jenna Benton’s
Great Grandpa talked about picking strawberries and blackberries in
the summer and canning them for winter. There was no electricity in
Troupsburg in the early 1930s. At school they had 15 min. of recess
in the morning and each afternoon. Everyone brought their lunch to
school in a bucket. A subject they had then that we don’t have today
was Latin. If any of our oldest residents would like to share their
memories with us, we would love to have you come in or send us a
letter.
Mrs. Hayes’ October Newsletter
Kindergarten is spooktacular! This has been a busy month of learning
new letters, sounds and sight words. We are enjoying our Daily
5 and each day look forward to making the decision of Reading to
Self, Reading to Someone or Listening to books. We recently introduced
the writing portion of Daily 5 and are learning that at the beginning
of kindergarten writing consists of drawing a picture and
then labeling it.
Math has found us working with the numbers 1-10 since the start of
the school year. We are beginning to count by 10’s and have also
been working on patterning and talking about more and less with
our friend Chris the Crocodile. In addition, October is always a fun
month as we get to practice our sorting and graphing with various
kinds of candy corn and pumpkins and then enjoy the sweet treats.
During October we have been learning more about the fall season,
fire safety and even illustrated our very own Pumpkin, Pumpkin
books. We are all anticipating our Fall Festival on the 31 st and the
opportunity to dress up, parade around town and then enjoy our
classroom party.
Math:
We will be learning about patterns and numbers to 100. Place value up to 100 will be covered,
even and odd and comparing numbers will also be discussed.
Social Studies:
We will be discussing the election and also learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans.
Language Arts:
We will be working on nouns and proper nouns. During writing time, our pieces will include
writing directions and writing a story.
Reading/Spelling:
We have been working on reviewing short and long vowel sounds and will continue to do so
for most of October. We will be reading the stories: Gus and Grandpa and the Two-
Wheeled Bike, The Great Ball Game, Click Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, and the reader’s
theater: A Trip to the Fire Station. We will be learning about long i made with –ie and-igh,
long a made with -ai and –ay, the r-controlled vowel sound made using –ar and long o
made with –oa and –ow. We will also look at using intonation and expression to help us with
our fluency while we read. To help us comprehend when we read, we will be making predictions
and using prior knowledge to help further our understanding.
Please remember to look on our school website: www.jtcsd.org. Also, remember to send in
The Right Stuff
On the eve of historical events, the breaking of the sound
barrier by Chuck Yeager on October 14, 1947 and Felix
Baumgartner (free falling 24 mi.) on October 14, 2012, the
J/T Boy Scout Troop 46 pedaled their bikes for 50 miles
for a merit badge requirement on October 13, 2012. Even
though not record breaking, but quite an accomplishment
for these young scouts, the Troop rode their bicycles on
Pa. Rail Trail to complete and earn their cycling merit
badge. At the halfway mark the scouts had a lunch break
at Rattle Snake Rock. They saw eagles, deer, and even
a snake along the route. They continued on to Waterville
Township where the ride completed, then loaded up to go
to our campsite. There we setup our tents and prepared
our evening meal. Great job Scouts!
Thank You
The Carlyle Beckhorn benefit held on October 20th
was a huge success. The day started out with 20
people braving the cooler temperatures and the
pending rain forecast.
Thank you to Joker Motorsports, Cox’s Harley
Davidson, and Larry’s Sportscenter for letting us use
your facilities for the poker run. Another thank you to
the Addison Eagles Club for allowing us to use their
hall and for the generous people that donated their
time to work during the benefit hours.
Finally, a huge THANK YOU to the people and
companies that donated, to the ones that helped gather
everything and prepare everything for the benefit, the
ones that sent their well wishes and prayers, and of
course, the ones that attended the benefit. It would not
have been such a success without you all.
Warning
Lights Send
Messages You
Can’t Ignore
(NAPSA)-Safety on
the road is no accident.
For example, when a
warning light illuminates
on a car’s dashboard, it
is alerting you to a situation
that requires your
attention.
While not all warning
lights are a sign that
disaster is imminent,
no warning indicator
should ever be ignored.
That’s the word from
the experts at AAA, who
encourage motorists
to read their owner’s
manual and know what
each of the warning
lights in their vehicle
means.
To help, they offer the
3
following tips:
Oil Pressure Light
great
The oil pressure light is
tours!
usually an oilcan symbol
or the word “OIL.” It
comes on when there is
a drop in engine oil pressure.
Of all the warning
lights, the oil pressure
light indicates the greatest
potential for serious
mechanical damage.
If the oil pressure warning
light comes on and
stays on, pull off the
road at the earliest safe
opportunity, shut off the
engine and call for assistance.
Engine Temperature
Light
The engine temperature
light is usually a thermometer
symbol or the
word “TEMP.” It comes
on when the engine
temperature is unsafe
for your vehicle. Unless
the engine temperature
is quickly brought under
control, major damage
may occur.
If there are any signs of
a cooling system leak,
pull off the road at the
earliest safe opportunity,
shut off the engine
and call for assistance.
Be careful when opening
the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
Charging System Light
The charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word “ALT” or “GEN.” It comes on when the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied power by the
alternator. If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air-conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately
for further inspection.
Check Engine Light
The check engine light comes on when there is a problem affecting the vehicle’s exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto
repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. However, if the check engine light begins flashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is over-heating. Should this
occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis.
Disregarding a flashing check engine light could start a fire, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs that could easily exceed $1,000.
