The Addison Ambassadors are planning to publish a newspaper 

for their Fall Foliage Festival. If your business would like to

The Addison Central school board of education will meet August 

14, 2012 and August 28, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in the high school 

cafeteria for their regularly scheduled business meetings. 

Addison Varsity Cross Country Begins 

The Addison Cross Country team will begin practice on Monday, August 13th. Practice will run 

from (pun intended) 9:30am-11:00am. All August practice dates will be held at Pinnacle State 

Park--we will meet at the old softball fi eld. Be advised--you will get thirsty and there will be bugs.

Meeting Change and Victorian Tea 

Hurry and make your reservations for the Victorian Garden Tea Party on August 11th at 45

The regular general meeting of the Middletown Historical Society on August 8th at the Museum 

has been changed to August 15th at the Northrup Hill One Room School House at 6 o’clock.

Trail Run at Pinnacle State Park 

Tim Lyons will be hosting a local trail run on Wednesday August 8th at Pinnacle State Park. 

The race begins a 6:30pm. The course will be 3.5 miles. There is no entry fee and no awards. 

The race will begin on the driving range. Limited parking will be available in the golf clubhouse 

parking lot. This race is part of the Wineglass Running Club Wednesday Night Series.Please

Pantry of The Sovereign Grace Baptist Church 

The Pantry of the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, 5 Front Street, Addison, will be held on the 

Sunday following the third Saturday of each month, from the basement of the church building. 

Continuing the custom of previous months the pantry will open immediately following the Sunday 

School and Morning Worship Services. 

Persons wishing to attend the worship services are welcome, however, church attendance is 

not required. 

The Pantry is open for residents of Addison and vicinity. It provides a variety of foods including: 

breads, cookies, cakes, fruits and vegetables. 

This is a ministry of the church. There is no charge. Simply bring a box or sack in which to 

carry the foodstuff home. 

This month’s Pantry will be held Sunday, August 19th from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Hunter Education Course 

Addison Fish & Game Club is once again sponsoring a Hunter 

Education program. This course is fully certifi ed by New York State 

Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The objective is 

to familiarize youngsters and adults with safety, ethics and proper 

use of firearms. The course is open to ages 11 and up. Participants 

11 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Participants 

12-15 years old are required to have a signed permission slip, 

from a parent or guardian, prior to fi rst day of class. 

Classes will be held on Monday, August 20th (6:00 - 9:30 p.m.), 

Tuesday, August 21st (6:00 - 9:30 p.m.) and Monday, August 27th 

(6:00 - 9:30 p.m.). All materials and literature will be supplied. No 

fi rearms or ammunition may be brought to the Club. 

Attendance at all classes is mandatory. A passing score of 80% or > 

will be required before certifi cation. A variety of teaching techniques 

will be used by the instructors including films, lecture, textbook study, 

demonstration, and active participation by students. Upon successful 

completion, a certifi cate will be awarded and your name will be fi led 

with New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

the Addison Fish & Game Club. Class size is limited to 40 persons,

Canisteo Grange To Hold Meeting 

Canisteo Grange #460 will hold its next meeting on August 7, 

2012 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Grange is located on 5th Street, 

Canisteo, NY. A program will be presented on Army Worms and 

should be interesting and informative. There will be a question and 

answer period following the program. Refreshments will be served. 

All interested individuals are invited to attend this program. Grange 

is a family fraternal, community service organization with roots in 

agriculture. We develop personal leadership skills in our members 

and strengthen our communities through local involvement. 

Blood Drive 

The Woodhull Community Church in collaboration with the Steuben 

Family Enrichment Collaborative will be hosting a blood drive on Saturday, 

August 11, 2012 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Woodhull Methodist 

Church located on the corner of Jasper and Main Street in Woodhull. 

Donations are down more than 10% across the country resulting in 

critically low blood supply levels. One pint of blood can save up to three 

lives. We urge all those eligible to donate to please come out and roll 

up a sleeve. Together we can make a difference one pint at a time.

Board Meeting 

The monthly board meeting was called to order at 

6:00 p.m. The board members present were Linda 

Mullen, Patty Irion, Wendy Potter, Larry McCaffrey. 

Randy Heckman was absent. The pledge to the flag 

was said by all that attended. The board approved the 

minutes from the July 19th board meeting.The Boy 

Scout projects are coming along. Mort Mullen gave 

an update on some code enforcement issues. He also 

gave a water update. George Whitsell gave a highway 

update. Marsha Mullen said there is another JCAP 

grant that she can apply for. The highway and general 

vouchers were presented and approved. The meeting 

was adjourned at 7:17 p.m. The next meeting will be 

August 16th at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

As retirees look ahead to the Medicare choices to be considered in the mid-October to mid-December 

window for making changes, they might fi nd the Corning Retirees Group program for August 8 a good one 

to attend. The meeting will be held, as usual, in the Riverfront Café from 10 to 11 a.m. 

The group’s guest speaker will be local fi nancial advisor Nancy A Socha, CFP, who notes that what to 

do about the Medicare program and possible supplements going forward is a question she hears frequently 

of late. She will address that topic with a PowerPoint presentation and will answer questions from retirees 

afterward. Nancy is president of Nancy A. Socha & Associates, the fi nancial planning and investment 

advisory fi rm she founded in 1983. Retirees can park free in the company’s employee parking garage west 

of the Arch. 

Truck And Tractor Pull At Woodhull Raceway Rescheduled 

For Friday, August 24, 2012 

The Lamb and Webster sponsored make event fi nds gates opening at 5:00 and pulling at 7:00 pm. After 

a persistent rain storm washed out the originally scheduled Empire State Pullers Association Truck and 

Tractor Pull at the Woodhull Raceway on Sunday, July 15, 2012 the management of both organizations

Female Teachers Support the 

Salvation Army’s Backpack Program 

Members of the Gamma Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma recently 

presented a check for $1050 to Capt John Merchant to assist the Salvation 

Army’s annual Backpack Program. Delta Kappa Gamma is an international 

society of over 103,000 female 

educators. The local 

chapter members donate 

both money and school supplies 

to the Salvation Army, 

and they also help fill the 

backpacks prior to the start 

of the school year. 

This is the fourth year 

that Gamma Zeta has been 

involved in this program 

to provide more than 500 

needy children in our area 

with new backpacks and 

school supplies so that they can begin the school year with a positive attitude 

about learning and a higher self-esteem. 

A portion of this year’s donation from Gamma Zeta came from the 

chapter’s own fund-raising projects, and the balance came from a grant 

awarded by the Delta Kappa Gamma state organization which also recognizes 

the backpack program as being worthy of ongoing support. With 

a continuing struggling economy, the need for the backpack program is 

greater than ever.

Addison Town Board Minutes 

This is a summary of the July 12, 2012 board meeting of the Addison 

Town Board. 

Department Head Reports: Assessor Lyons stated that final assessment 

roll is 

completed and filed with the Town Clerk. Highway Superintendent Parrillo 

stated that they replaced pipes on the Tobin Rd. and Fred Rial Rd. Check 

received from scrapping old pipe in the amount of $650 Town Clerk Andrukat 

stated that the town hall will be open Tuesday, 

October 2nd 10am-2pm and Saturday, October 13th 2pm-9pm for voters 

registration day. 

Committee Reports: Building committee stated that sidewalk is completed 

to specs 

and will need to be sealed prior to winter. Would also like to get some 

prices on how much 

to fix front of town hall and possible addition to the highway garage. 

Old Business: Motion was past to purchase a snow plow equipment & 

dump body for a 2013 6x4, 10 wheeler cab & chassis at the cost of $85,570 

from Smart System. The funds will come from the motor vehicle account 

and reserve account to cover both purchases. The board will hold off with 

signing a road protection program with DELTA 

Engineers at this time. Board approved to change health insurance for 

Highway 

Superintendent Parrillo at the cost of $560.44/mo which is a savings of 

$347.78/mo. 

Board is checking with opting out of the counties workers comp program. 

New Business: Supervisor Cunningham has retired from the school district 

and is no longer on the retirement report for the town as of June 30th. 

Reports: Supervisor, Town Clerk and Justice monthly report for June 

received. 

Approval to pay the bills as usual in the amount of $63,977.63. 

Other Business: It was noted that budget time is coming soon and forms 

will be 

distributed to each department heads. The meeting was held at the highway 

department and noted how clean the shop looked. 

Executive Session: Discussing the highway employee’s union contract.

Dear Editor 

Let’s fi rst say congrats to the residents on Hibbard Road and Tobin Road in 

the Town of Addison for getting their roads tarred and stoned again within the 

last 3 years. We moved on the end of Gosper Road in 2005 and were promised 

by Town Supervisor Parrillo “not this year, but the following 2006” that our end 

was going to be fi xed, the conditions were and still are horrible. Well it’s 2012, 

and still no improvements to our end, ditches are still even with the road which 

causes them to wash out and fl ood. Pot holes by the end of winter are the size 

of your car. ALL other parts of Gosper Road and now Hibbard Road again are 

fi xed but the end that really needs attention is still in loom. I believe Mr. Parrillo 

just told us what we wanted to hear and has no intentions of fi xing our end of 

the road, or he would have tackled it when he promised. We all pay taxes that 

live on the end of Gosper Road as much as the residents on Hibbard Road. 

Why are we forced to destroy our vehicles, try avoiding pot holes, drive in a 

dust cloud and have the inside of our vehicles layered in dust? Will someone 

step up and help Mr. Parrillo to make improvements that need to be done and 

stop making excuses?? Can anyone help fi x the end of Gosper Road??

Coming soon to Main Street will be the much needed new Laundromat back to Addison. 

Tim hopes to be open by the end of September. It has been a major rehab of the 

entire building, starting with the back wall, Tim said. The second floor apartment has 

been completely redone with everything new. New electric service and water service 

has also been installed to the building. Now Tim is concentrating on the Laundromat. 

When complete there will be twelve new washers, (six top load and six front load), plus 

three large capacity commercial washers. Also installed will be twelve new dryers. A 

rear deck will soon be installed to encourage rear entrance customers, as there is a 

two hour parking limit on Main Street. The Laundromat will make a total of eight new 

business’ added to Main Street in the last five years. What’s next???

Fracking: Nimby 

The Ultimate Hypocrisy 

Wickipedia: NIMBY or Nimby is an acronym for the phrase “not in my back yard”. The term (or the 

derivative Nimbyism) is used pejoratively to describe opposition by residents to a proposal for a new 

development close to them, developments that are generally needed in the society. 

All you folks out there that are so vehemently opposed to “fracking” in order to recover our natural gas and 

petroleum resources, can we assume that you are growing your own meat and vegetables, traveling by 

horse and buggy, heating your homes with wood from your own property cut with a crosscut saw, pumping 

your own water by hand from a hand driven well, lighting your homes with candles and otherwise living 

only a “natural lifestyle”? 

If the answer to any of these questions is other than yes, then you are in effect saying that it’s OK to enjoy 

the modern convenience provided by using hydrocarbons to promote your lifestyle, as long as it’s not 

produced near your place of dwelling or interfering with your desired lifestyle. Therefore, the people who 

do live near to the fuel production location, whether in the USA or elsewhere in the world, are not worth 

considering should there be negative effects from the production of your fuel in their area. It’s the same 

type of reasoning being used to justify the purchase of less expensive clothing produced in the sweatshops 

of Asia and South America. 

What about our landfi lls as potential sources of contamination of our water supply? They are buried at 

or near surface level, 

where rainfall can leach 

the contaminants downward 

into our aquifers 

and from there outward 

throughout the land. 

Aquifers flow directionally 

like underground 

rivers. Landfills are very 

loosely monitored for 

contaminants, which are 

ever present in today’s 

industrialized society. 

The composite liners 

designed to prevent percolation 

of contaminants 

into groundwater are not 

impervious to puncture 

by sharp objects, which 

seem to be plentiful in 

landfills. It only takes 

one puncture.’

Herman B. Potter, 89, of St. Rte. 36, Troupsburg, 

NY entered into rest on Monday, July 

30, 2012 at the Green Home in Wellsboro, Pa. 

Born in Troupsburg on December 13, 1922, 

Herm was the son of the late Benjamin J. and 

S. Elizabeth Burnside Potter. He was a graduate 

of Troupsburg High School. He was a 

US Army veteran, serving at the close of World 

War II. 

After leaving the military, Herm was a mail carrier 

for a short time and then was 

employed in road construction. He spent many 

years working with his brother Elbert as a 

mechanic and truck driver at Elbert Potter Garage 

in Troupsburg. Along with his regular 

jobs, he always operated his small family farm. 

Herm also assisted his brother Gilbert in 

building construction. 

On July 9, 1966, he and Bertha Clark were married 

in Wellsboro. They were long time 

members of the Austinburg Methodist Church. 

Herm served the Town of Troupsburg 

for several years as Town Constable. He was also 

a former member of the Troupsburg 

Ambulance Corp. and the Austinburg Grange. 

Herm was preceded in death by his brothers, 

Elbert in 1996 and Gilbert in 2011. 

Surviving are his wife, Bertha Potter of Troupsburg, 

his son and daughter in law, Dennis 

and Margaret Potter of Troupsburg, his daughter, 

Cindy Adams of Mansfi eld, Pa., his 

grandchildren, John and Shayna Potter and Vanessa, 

Anthony and Tyresa Adams, his 

great grandchildren, Devlin, Zayne and Carmen 

Zihm, and Austin Fuller, his sisters, 

Nellie Tubbs of North Tonawanda, NY, Norma 

Swimely of Palmer, Alaska and Jean 

(Keith) Sworts of Fairbanks, Alaska, his brother 

in law and sisters in law, Carl and 

Bonnie Clark of Wellsboro and Margaret Potter 

of Troupsburg and many nieces and 

nephews.

Jim Beverly, of Oakfi eld, NY, with 50 years of experience in training retrievers and involvement with the 

waterfowl hunting industry, again brings his Companion Retriever Hunting Challenge (C.R.H.C.) to the 

event. This year’s contest will donate all proceeds to the Wounded Warrior program! 

The contest has already raised over $1,500 for the Wounded Warriors from the Finger Lakes and Southern 

Tier Patriots. Those interested in donating to the Wounded Warriors for the C.R.H.C. can visit https://

On October 13, Beverly invites show visitors to bring their dog for a half hour training session during the 

afternoon for a donation to the Wounded Warriors of $30. Sessions must be pre-reserved. At 11:00 a.m. 

he will answer questions on training, waterfowl and bird hunting at his actual goose and duck hunting 

scenario set up near the pond. 

The C.R.H.C. will begin at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, October 14. The challenge is set up as a real hunting 

situation, one session on the ground and one in the water. It is not for a professional handler and highly 

polished bird dog team. Instead it is designed for the weekend waterfowl hunter and his faithful canine 

sidekick. Beverly says the contest allows a person to enjoy the experience without stress or intimidation. 

The focus is not on winning but on enjoying the experience and learning how to get what you want from 

your dog. Beverly even offers advice to the contestants during the contest. 

The contest offers three levels: 

Level one will consist of single retrieves in an actual goose and duck hunting scenario. 

Level 2 will consist of more diffi cult scenarios, but again, real hunting situations. 

Level 3 is for dogs that hold hunt tests or fi eld trial titles but will not be scored for trophies. 

There is a $30 registration fee for each dog. Rules, registration form and contact information for Beverly 

can be found at www.SouthernTierOutdoorShow.com. Trophies will be awarded at all levels in addition 

to a drawing for prizes. 

Scoring will take into consideration all phases of the hunt including the dog/handler relationship. Handlers 

must be at least 12 years old to participate, be able to use their waterfowl calls, and fi re popper loads in 

a 12 gauge shotgun. 

Beverly has a DVD project in progress which shows his training techniques and attitude for the everyday 

retriever owner. A book containing many articles with tips on correcting issues of preparing and handling 

the retriever during an actual hunt is scheduled for completion by late 2012. For further information on the
