ADDISON POST Saturday, FEBRUARY 9, 2013 Page 3
Dr. James Meinsen, D.C.
Chiropractor, Exercise Physiologist
Phone: 607-359-BACK (2225)
6. HOW TO CHOOSE A CHIRPRACTOR
BY: DR. MEINSEN
CHIROPRACTOR
APPLIED PHYSIOLOGIST
Too much arch (lumbar extension) to the low
back is, by far!, the most commonly seen problem
at Addison Chiropractic. I’ve helped more back
problems by giving a simple explanation of what
too much arch in the low back is, and what to do
about it, than any other thing I do. Therefore, to correct
LB pain, the first lesson is to understand what
LUMBAR VERTEBRAL EXTENTION MOTION is.
Lumbar extension motion is when one leans
back and arches the low back! This arching of the
back can be done when standing, sitting or while
lying face down on the floor. Some offenders of
this activity even place their hands behind their
back to “arch” further. Yes, it is commonly done by
many. But, that doesn’t make it good for you. It’s
not. Stop it and you’ll most likely feel much better!
Picture a dog getting up from a nap. Some put
their front legs forward and arch the low back in an
extreme manner to make their back momentarily
sunken or concave. This is (low back), LUMBAR
EXTENSION. The longer the dog practices doing
this, the greater the arch that can be achieved, and
the worse that dog’s back will eventually become.
As it gets older, it’ll have trouble walking up an
incline and up small hills; the climbing of stairs becomes
impossible for an old dog with a very sunken
low back. Picture this dog standing upright on its
two hind legs in a human-like posture. The dog’s
lumbar vertebrae won’t tolerate this posture for
long. The human low back, with too much lumbar
arch won’t either! Ask a friend to see if your back
hurts most at the greatest point of the depression
in your low back arch.
If one has too much lumbar extension motion,
then common sense suggests a chiropractor
shouldn’t thrust down into the low back. But, some,
most or maybe all of them do. I can only surmise
this opinion from what I’ve seen consistently over
the years.
I place this method of chiropractic, along with
many other ill conceived chiropractic methods, into
the “ART” of practice and not into the “SCIENCE”
of practice. My opinion is that science trumps art
in looking for a chiropractor.
Too much lumbar extension motion jams the
very pain sensitive lumbar facet bones to the back
of each vertebra and will cause constant and
sometimes very sharp PAIN. It commonly hurts to
sit. A continuation will progressively weaken and
degenerate the low back. If you love someone and
see them doing this, tell them to “STOP ARCHING
YOUR BACK”!
As a general rule, don’t let anyone thrust down
into your lumbar spine. Instead, learn to flex your
low back. I’ll explain.
were given new wedding clothes. We celebrated
communion and it is a reminder that the King is having a party and we are invited to the celebration,
not because we did anything to deserve being there, but by the Grace of the King who wants us there.
The King of Heaven made this possible because He sent us His Son to die on the cross for us. He
was the ultimate sacrifice. Where are you in this story Are you too busy to go, too much to do, other
plans, etc. “I love all you’ve done but I just can’t make it today.” We don’t kill the messenger but we
do ignore. If we don’t wear the wedding garment, we will be thrown out. By grace we have been invited
but we need to be clothed in the Blood of Christ. God wants you to come to His eternal party, are you
ready Our services are at 9:30 in the Baptist Church and we invite you to worship with us Sunday.
Science Groups
Last week in Science we were working
in stations. There were four
jobs: the getter, the reporter, the recorder,
and the starter. When we
were in the groups, we learned
about simple machines. We looked
at levers, screws, pulleys, wedges,
wheel and axle, and inclined
planes. We did a lab with a lever
and pennies. That is what we have
done in our Science Stations.
Tuscarora and Valley Yearbooks are
on sale now. Your child should
have brought an order form
home. If you need an extra one,
there are extras at Mrs. Monroe's
desk. Yearbooks are $7.00 each
when pre-ordered and will be $8.00
each if not pre-ordered. Checks or
Money Orders should be made out
to Inter-State Studios. Multiple orders
can be put in one envelope. If
paying with cash, send in the exact
amount, as we will not be able to
make change. Yearbook sales run
from now until March 22, 2013.
Addison
84 Front Street
Part II: Sprague and Short
Ownership
Submitted by: Larry
Mundy
It is unclear as to what
next happened, but, by
1907, Fred B. Sprague
of Passaic, New Jersey,
had acquired the grist
mill at 84 Front Street.
It is possible that by
1906 or early 1907, J.
Elliot Parker had died
though no record of his
burial has been found
in any Addison cemetery.
It is possible he
is buried in a cemetery
in Woodhull, New York,
the place of his birth.
Fred B. Sprague was
born in New Jersey in
1875 and died in Addison
c. 1922. He
married Nina (Lena) Stafford in 1907 and then,
shortly thereafter, acquired the Elliott grist mill.
No evidence can be found to indicate what happened
to the hay pressing business and/or its buildings.
Fred Sprague ran the feed, produce, and reintroduced coal business until
his death in 1922. He used the railroad siding to bring in these goods, and
to ship other goods out. For a time after Fred B.’s death, wife Nina(Lena)
ran the business. (Fred Sprague and Nina Sprague Smith, family recollections;
also, Farm Journal Illustrated Rural Directory of Steuben County,
New York, 1917-1922). After finding the task too taxing while raising a
teen age son, Gordon, Nina Sprague sold the business to B (Benona) F.
Short some time in 1921.
B. F. and his wife Saphrona apparently had little interest in the feed, produce,
and coal business. It soon was closed down. The Short’s preceded
to build a gas station between the mill and Front Street; and erected storage
tanks on the back and east part of the property. The new business was
called the Kendall Gas Station, and sold Gulf, Blue Sonoco, and Rotary
unleaded gasoline. Being the state of the art for the day, it had a modern
air compressor, and self computing pumps. Early in its business history,
(1928), the business suffered a scare. An ice house fire of the Dairymen’s
League threatened to spread to the Amboco tanks (owned by Standard Oil),
and the Metro Oil tanks of B. F. Short north, across the tracts, and west
of the present G. L. F./Agway/Wade’s Farm Supply building. The fire was
contained, and no damage was sustained by the fuel storage facility. In
1929, Earl Leavenworth was named the Addison Amboco Storage facility
manager. He would later, for a time, be Addison’s police chief.
FASNY Help Deadline Extended To February 15th
Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I – Corning) is sending an alert to members of volunteer fire
departments and members of the community about an opportunity to receive tuition reimbursement
through the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). FASNY has developed the Higher
Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP) as an incentive for people to serve in New York’s volunteer
fire service. This program will provide tuition reimbursement to student-volunteers. The deadline to
apply for the spring semester has now been extended to February 15.
“The HELP program from the Firemen’s Association is the perfect opportunity for individuals to engage
in community service and pay for their continuing education,” said Palmesano. “Volunteer firefighters
are in high demand all across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region and this program could help
meet this demand, while providing individuals with the opportunity to give back to their community
and obtain a quality education.”
The FASNY HELP program allows community college students to receive up to 100 percent tuition
reimbursement for up to eighty credit hours while serving as volunteer firefighters and maintaining their
grades. According to FASNY, the goal of the program is to help retain and recruit needed volunteers
to fill a shortage left by the loss of more than 41,000 emergency volunteer workers that has occurred
over the years. To apply, candidates must first complete their local fire department’s volunteer membership
process and the Volunteer Fire Department Commitment form to be eligible to join the program.
“Our emergency volunteer workers are the backbone of our rural communities and we must continue
to be proactive to help in the retention and recruitment of these volunteers who provide such a valuable
service to the residents and taxpayers of our local, rural communities,” said Palmesano. “The
great partnership we have with FASNY to help curb the decline in volunteers can play an important
role in filling an important community need and I hope students and volunteers will take advantage
of this opportunity.”
NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF AN
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development has received an application for financial assistance
from the Town of Woodhull, Hamlet of Woodhull, for their Wastewater Collection and Treatment
Project. The Town of Woodhull, acting as lead agency, and as required by the National Environmental
Policy Act, has presented an Environmental Assessment to Rural Development that evaluated the
potential environmental effects and consequences of the proposed project. This notice announces the
availability of the Environmental Assessment for public review and comment.
The proposed project will consist of new collection sewers and a new treatment plant to be built in and
throughout the hamlet. Collection sewers are proposed to be located in street and road rights-of-way and
would consist of small diameter low pressure sewers utilizing a new septic tank/effluent pump installed
at every connection discharging into a small diameter low pressure sewer. The wastewater treatment
plant is proposed to be located on land along the east side of Washington Street currently owned by the
town of Woodhull. Total acreage of the project site is based on a 2.0 acre portion of the current highway
stockpile yard utilized by the wastewater treatment plant, and 36,470 lineal feet of sewer force mains,
laterals and other linear collection features impacting a 15 foot wide corridor. Effluent treated to intermittent
stream standards would be made at or near the confluence of Tuscarora and South Tuscarora Creeks.
A portion of the project area is located within a mapped 100-year flood plain associated with the Tuscarora
Creek. The land where the proposed treatment plant is to be located is within a FEMA designated
Zone X however; all new treatment facilities will be elevated above the FEMA 100 year flood elevation.
Applicable erosion and sedimentation control practices outlined in the “New York State Guidelines for
Urban Erosion and Sediment Control” will be implemented during construction to minimize potential
environmental consequences. Practices would include the use of silt fencing and reestablishment of
vegetation upon completion of construction activities. The areas in which ground disturbance will occur will
be graded and re-seeded as quickly as possible following construction to restore the natural setting and
to preserve the original values to the maximum extent possible. Permits will be obtained, as needed, from
the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and/or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
for work in any wetland areas, or the 100-foot adjacent areas to a wetland.
Requests to receive a copy of, or to review the environmental assessment upon which this determination
is based, should be directed to Mr. Thomas Becker, Lead Area Specialist, USDA-Rural Development,
415 West Morris Street, Bath, New York 14810 and at the Town of Woodhull, 1585 Academy Street, P.O.
Drawer 121, Woodhull, New York 14898. A general location map of the proposed action is available at
the local servicing office. Any person interested in commenting on this proposed project should submit
comments to the above addresses within 30 days of this publication date.
ATTENTION RATHBONE RESIDENTS
Eugene “Gene” T. Nobriga
Eugene “Gene” T. Nobriga, age 73, of Big Flats, NY passed away unexpectedly
on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Arnot Hospital. Born in Corning, he was
the son of the late Peter and Maxine (Beebe) Nobriga.
He served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962 on the USS
Holder. Upon return home he married Emily Burton, his wife of over 50 years on
July 14, 1962. Gene retired in 1997 from Corning Inc. with 38 years of service.
He was a charter member of the Addison’s Eagles Club, charter member of the
Twin River CB Club, and he served on the Addison Village Board. He was an outdoorsman
and avid hunter. His family was the most important part of his life and
he always said, ”If you don’t have family and friends, you don’t have anything.”
Gene is survived by his wife: Emily Nobriga of Big Flats; daughter: Beth
(Jon) Bailey of Big Flats; granddaughter: Emma Bailey of Big Flats; brother:
Francis(Sandy) Nobriga of Addison; sisters: Pauline Donajkowski of Watkins
Glen, Phyllis (James Sr.) Davis of CA; sister-in-law: Phyllis Nobriga of Gang
Mills, Nancy Burton of Addison; and 20 nieces and nephews and 30 great-nieces
and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph and by brother-in-laws, Harold
Burton and Eugene Donajkowski.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, One
Wombaugh Square in Addison on February 8, 2013 at 11:00AM with Rev. Linda
Liebhart offi ciating.
Gene was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, and
served on the Vestry for many years. The family has asked for donations to be
made to the church in his name.
Those wishing to offer condolences to the family may do so online at www.
Letters to the Editor Policy
The Addison Post encourages members of the community to tell us their thoughts on issues of public importance, not
personal matters. Written articles or letters to the editor should be typed or neatly printed. Letters that are fewer than
300 words are preferred, but longer letters will be printed at a cost of 15¢ per word over 300. Letters may be mailed,
faxed, dropped off or emailed, however every letter MUST be signed and include an address and phone number for
verification, or it will not be printed. Letters may be edited for space considerations. The publication of any letter is at
the discretion of the Editor. All letters become the property of The Addison Post and cannot be returned.
Dear Editor
Why was the moon thought be made of cheese Actually, it wasn’t. It was a tall
tale told to children, much like the tales of Paul Bunyan. We still have tall tales
today, except they are told by people of great importance as if they are absolute
fact. For example, President Obama stated that the Boy Scouts should drop
their ban on homosexuality. He went on to declare, “My attitude is.. that gays
and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody
else does, in every institution and walk of life,” or basically treating this sin as
a civil rights issue. The Boy Scouts were created with the Bible as a core book
in their moral foundation. What does that Bible say “Therefore God gave them
over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity....Even their women
exchanged the natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men
also abandoned natural relations with women and were infl amed with lust for
one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in
themselves the penalty for their perversion.” (Romans 1:24, 26-27). The Bible
is very clear on this issue, yet society insists on turning sin into a noble cause.
Sincerely,
Reverend Adrian Essigmann
Foreign Exchange Students Visit Niagara Falls
Several foreign exchange students from around the world have joined local families for a school
year of study in the United States through Academic Year in America (academicyear.org). Local
families are hosting students from Israel, Russia, Oman, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Indonesia,
Malaysia, and Pakistan. As part of this exchange, the students are exposed to many of the sites
in the U.S. Our group of many host family members and students visited Niagara Falls State Park.
It was a fabulous day that included a voyage on the Maid of the Mist and a visit to the infamous
Cave of the Winds.
In addition to several trips so far this school year, the students are also committed to community
service hours. The students have helped out at fund raisers, like the Harvest Dinner for the
Troupsburg Volunteer Ambulance Corp., the local fire departments, band boostsers, TeensforJeans
and more. These students are also here to promote understanding, and have spoken at churches,
colleges, community centers and local schools. If you have a community service that could use
some willing workers, we would love to help out. Or if you would like our students to visit your
classroom, we have presentations for all age groups. Please contact Terri Rogers at (607)525-
6125. This is an exciting exchange, don’t miss out!
Trusting & Accepting God’s Ways
Recently, a friend of mine told me about his meeting with a financial adviser, and how for the first
time he truly understood what he was being told. He felt he could trust and accept the advice
because the financial adviser explained simply and at his level of understanding. Our relationship
with God should also be simple and easy to understand. We may not fully understand everything
about our faith or why certain things happen to us in this world, but that’s okay. We simply have
to realize that God cares about us and that His ways are not always our ways. God’s unending
love and support for us is always there. In return, He asks us to love, trust, and accept him as
our Lord and Savior.
