St. Nicholas Celebration
The Feast of St. Nicholas was Thursday, December 6, 2012. On
that evening 41 people, including 17 children, gathered at Church
of the Redeemer, Episcopal Church in Addison. They all enjoyed
a festive meal. Following dinner St. Nicholas made a special visit.
This was a great opportunity to learn about the true St. Nicholas:
the man of faith who lived his life in devotion to Christ. The true
story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during
the third century in what is now the southern coast of Turkey.
His wealthy parents, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still
young. Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy,
the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God
and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. It was a
fun and very special evening at Church of the Redeemer.
5th Graders Investigate Salinity with Brine Shrimp
Students are exploring if the salinity effects brine shrimp eggs hatching. We had
four different cups in each group of students. The first cup had 0 scoops of salt,
the second cup had 1 scoop of salt, the third cup had 2 scoops of salt, and the
fourth cup had 3 scoops of salt. A few days later, we observed each cup to find
out which environment hatched the most brine shrimp eggs. We found that the
cups with 1 scoop of salt and 2 scoops of salt would be the optimum environment
for hatching shrimp eggs. We are now exploring if the eggs that were in the cup
with 0 scoops of salt are able to hatch if we add salt to it. Doing this will tell us
if brine shrimp eggs are viable or not. This experiment connects to a real life situation
that we read about. Scientists had this same problem when looking at
Mono Lake in California. Students are having a great time and learning many new
things through FOSS, our new science program.
Eighth grader Jordan Woodhouse
and seventh grader Kameron
Combs were chosen as November
Students of the Month.
Mrs. Olander loves having
Kameron in her science class and
enjoys observing him take part in
group discussions.
According to the eighth
grade team, “Jordan goes above
and beyond in her academics. She
is very responsible, is a positive
leader in the classroom, and is always
willing to help other students.”
Congratulations Jordan and
Kameron!
Our November Box
Tops Winner was
Logan Ford from
Mrs. DiLauro's Pre-K
class. He won a
$15 gift certificate
from The People's
Bakery. We are going
to combine December
and January's
collections together.
The prize
will be a gift certificate to Regal Cinemas. All
collection sheets from December and January
will be collected January 18th. A new sheet
will come home after the holidays so keep collecting
those Box Tops!
The News from Room 205
by Class Reporter Sara Stierly
MadCap Puppets
On November 28th we saw an assembly called, "If
You Wish Upon A Fish." It was about a fisherman
who saw a magic fish. The fisherman's wife wanted
to be queen of the world. The fisherman went to
the fish and his wish was granted. Then the fisherman's
wife wanted to be queen of the universe.
Wish granted. Then the
fisherman's wife wanted to be a
god! But the fish could not
grant that wish so everything
went back to normal. It was a
really good show.
Tuscarora Advantage students wrote letters to Santa that will be
taken to Macy’s for delivery. For every letter received by Macy’s,
Odyssey Illustrated Press, an independent small press whose main focus of publishing
author Adrian Essigmann. Michael Sturgulewski, the company graphic designer, has
announced that the
book has gone to the
printer and should
be available on Amazon
next week. The
book is the second
in a series of which
lead OIP artist Jonathan
Myers (artist of
the graphic novel
Swamp Fox) described
as Pilgrim’s
Progress meets
Enders Game. The
back cover reads,
“Set up for failure!
Hunted by a cunning
enemy! Will C-3 survive?
The next entry
continues in the exciting
C-3 Saga. The
members of C-3 are
placed into a wilderness
test designed to completely humiliate them and destroy
their already fragile morale. Their superiors are part of this
cruel plot and every detail has been orchestrated to this end.
Unknown to the
Cs a large dark
assault is coming
down
nearby with the
goal of enslaving
C-3’s new friends.
The leader of the
C-3 is in the area
and has plans to
deal with them
permanently. The
odds are stacked
against C-3.
However, their
Master is still on
the throne. It will
Another way to look at this proposal is, it may cost
your more to purchase your share of a wastewater
paid for your house, well, septic system, driveway,
and yard when you purchased them. Pd. Ad

Vote against the unnecessary
$4 million dollar Sewer
Don’t be deceived by the affl uent few residents of
Woodhull or the expensive Hunt Engineering fi rm
that stands to make a substantial profit by selling
a $4,021,722 wastewater collection and treatment
facility to the poor home owners in the hamlet of
Woodhull. Instead, let us all help those 10% who
may require a new well or septic system. The cost
of such assistance could be less than 10% of the
total proposed expenses for the new facility $6.00
per month not $60.00.
Dear Editor
It’s time to set the record straight about
a certain resolution before the Steuben
County Legislature regarding the Town of
Rathbone. After researching a deed where
the Town of Rathbone wanted to build a
boat launch in memory of the late Isabelle
Risley’s son, Gordan, the town discovered
that the land requested to be turned over to
the Town in the late 90’s was not the land
requested for the boat ramp, but another
section within the Town. Having already
received a grant from The Friends of the
Chemung River, locking on GST BOCES
from Coopers, to build the pavilion, donations
from Katie’s Concrete and Chemung
County Soil & Water furnishing the majority
of the lumber, I went to the County Administrator
explaining that Isabelle Risley
was in her 90’s and that the Town did not
want to postpone the project another year.
The Administrator stated that we could
proceed with building the pavilion and that
the County could work things out so that it
would not be a problem.
The County Attorney looked at two options:
a 99 year lease or a quick claim
deed. It was decided that for the needed
access to Tracy Creek, the lease would be
the better choice. At no time did I, or the
Town, just build on County property without
permission. This reporter has continued to
write negative article after article against
me without truly looking at the facts. As a
Public Official, I’m subject to her attacks.
For this reason I will never return calls
or make comments to her, because she
seems to disregard the facts and interpret
information to fit her bias, rather than impartially
report facts.
Christmas A Time To Give
Mark your calendar for an open house Saturday, December
15th, then bring your children to Higher Ground
Christian Church at 108 Front Street, Addison. Children
may stop in any time between 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
There the youth will decorate their own sugar cookie,
paint their own ornament, and get a surprise gift for
Christmas as they exit the church. Parents or a guardian
must accompany and assist the children they bring;
please do not just drop your children off. There will be a
snack table for adults where coffee, snacks, and other
beverages will be served as you wait for your children.
In a world where people are getting offended when
we say “Merry Christmas” and not “Happy Holiday”,
let’s show our children that “Jesus is the reason for the
season”. Bring them to the church and give them a day
filled with creativity, and a blessed Christmas memory.
Sponsored by Higher Ground Christian Church and The
Remnant Sons MC Corning Chapter.
Community Church of Woodhull
Submitted by Sharon Calkins
(12/2-9/12) Psalm 25:1-7, John 13:34-35, Mat: 5:44 and Col.
1:15. We all hope for things and everyday brings hope. A lot
is unfounded and baseless but we still hope. On the 2nd we lit
the candle of Hope. We are reminded on Communion Sunday
that our hope is in Him. Psalm 25 is all about hope. If our hope
is in Him it is all good. That is what makes the difference in our
lives. The journey from life to death is painful, but we have hope
in Christ. On Christ the Solid Rock we stand- our hope is nothing
less. Our Hope is in the Lord. On the 9th we lit the candle
of Love. What/Who do you love? Is it food, clothes, family, friends, etc? How can we use the word Love for food,
friends and spouses? The Greeks had three different words for love. (1) Phileo; Brotherly love. (Philadelphia is
known as the city of brotherly love.) (2) Eros; The love between a man and woman. (Erotic is physical and emotional
love.) (3) Agape; God’s love for us. (It is an all-encompassing love.) Jesus was born for us and He died for
us. In John 13:34 God tells us to love one another as He has loved us. Mat 5:44 We are to love even our enemies.
We’ve all failed at this. If we don’t obey this commandment, why do we light the candle of love? Because God is
Love! His love can flow from us to others, even our enemies. If He is love and He is in me, then I can do this. We
can love others, our enemies included, because God’s love is in us. Our services are at 9:30 in the Baptist Church
and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday.
The Gift of God
Christmas is a celebration of God’s great gift to humanity: The gift of God Himself, coming to us in human form as a servant under the
humblest circumstances. We do well to recall just how lowly were the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. Mary was a young womanprobably
no more than 15 or 16 years old, engaged to be married when she found herself “with child”. Upon discovering this, her fiance
Joseph resolved to break off the engagement. But following the counsel of a heavenly messenger, Joseph remained with her. Then, at
the time of the child’s birth, the couple had to travel to Bethlehem to comply with the census. With no room at the inn, Mary was forced to
give birth in the open fields, and the baby was laid in a manger, which is a feeding trough for livestock. In short, God emptied Himself of
His divinity and became a helpless baby who was born being exposed to the elements, utterly dependent upon the care of his destitute
mother and father. There is a great lesson to be learned here, but it is one that is too easily forgotten. God did not come to teach us how
to be gods, or great kings and queens puffed up with pride and surrounded by luxuries and servants. He came to teach us to be humble
servants who would love and help each other, even under the worst circumstances.
