Defensive Driving Course 

The six-hour National Safety Council “Defensive 

Driving Course” will be given on Monday, July 22nd 

and Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 from 6:15 p.m. - 9:30 

p.m., at the Masonic Hall at the intersection of County 

Routes 71 and 123, in Jasper. A fee is charged and 

payable at the course. 

The instructor for the course is Richard E. Swan. The 

defensive driving course offers all drivers, and those 

not yet driving a new approach to learning accident 

prevention skills and safe drivers tips. The course 

also automatically deducts 4 points from your driving 

record, and allows all principal operators of vehicles 

to save 10% on their liability, and collision auto insurance 

premiums for 3 years. 

Pre-registration is required and space is limited, so

Woodhull Community Day 

Committee Meeting 

The Woodhull Community Day Committee will meet 

Thursday evening July 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Woodhull 

Town Hall. Plans for the 5K run/walk are underway. 

Entertainment for the afternoon will consist of the 

Sgro Brothers, Bob Melnyk and the Polka Magic Band, 

Dave Weaver who does a Live & “In-Personated” Elvis 

Tribute, The Woodhull Community Band, and Harold 

Benjamin and the Country Boys. 

If you are a resident of Woodhull and have some ideas 

or suggestions you would like to share or would just like 

to help us this year, please come and join us. 

Music in the Park & Catered Meal 

The Middletown Historical Society will be serving a 

catered meal from Fran’s Landing this Friday July 12th, 

at “Music in the Park.” The menu that will be served at 

5:30 is sausage peppers/onions, or chicken speedies, 

baked beans, salt potatoes, drink and a cookie for $8. 

Come, bring lawn chairs, eat and listen to the band for 

a fun fi lled evening on Valerio Parkway. 

Addison Food Pantry 

The Pantry is held the third (3rd) Tuesday of each 

month (except Holidays). The time is 3:00 pm to 4:00 

pm. The Pantry is located at The Addison Community 

Center, 13 Community Drive, Addison, NY 14801. 

THE ADDISON CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT IS 

THE AREA SERVED. Persons using the Pantry are 

asked to bring their own bags and boxes. The next 

Food Pantry is TUESDAY, July 16, 2013. The Advisory

The Addison Senior Citizens annual picnic will begin 

at noon Wednesday, July 17th at the American Legion.

Middletown Historical Society 

Summer Garden Party 

The Middletown Historical Society is hosting a Summer 

Garden Party at 45 Tuscarora Street, the home 

of Reverend Richard Hubbard and his wife Diane, who 

is the master gardener of Farnham Gardens. The date 

is August 10th, from 1-4. There will be all kinds of delicious 

summer garden party foods, croquet and music 

by the barbershop Quartet “Revised Arrangement” 

who will sing at 2 o’clock. An old fashion croquet game 

will be available and as an added bonus, there will 

be some vendors who will set up their wares around 

in the garden. The Middletown Historical Society will 

have raffle baskets and door prizes. There will be one 

seating for the afternoon and reservations are required 

and can be made by calling Vi Powers at 359-4646 

by August 5. You should make your reservations early 

because the table settings will fi ll up fast. The cost of 

the event is prepay $15. and day of program it is $18. 

This is a wonderful opportunity for good food, music, 

beautiful gardens and shopping at the vendors to 

benefi t our local museum’s expenses. There will be 

summer party tents so even if it rains the event will 

continue. Come and have fun. 

Jasper Seniors Meeting 

The Jasper Seniors will meet July 17 at noon at 

the Jasper Town Hall. Bring a dish to pass and your 

own table service. 

Regular Big 6 Show At Woodhull 

Raceway Saturday, July 20, 2013 

The night of action to include the 1st Annual King of 

the Ring Challenge for the 370 Modifi eds along with 

inaugural running of the Jake Davis Memorial. 

Dgien Trucking of Howard, NY will present a Regular 

card of racing at the historic Woodhull Raceway on 

July 20 featuring the NAPA Crate Sportsman, the S&W 

Awards and Photos 360 Late Models, the Insinger 

Performance 370 Modifi eds, along with the Joe Willcox 

Performance Street Stocks, the Signs Plus Mini 

Stocks and the LaBarron Brothers Repair and Parts 

FWD Divisions. 

As part of the nightly event the 370 Modifi es will 

compete in the 1st Annual King of the Ring Challenge 

one on one single elimination event. This special is 

open to all 370 Modifi ed competitors that register for 

the July 20 show. Cars will be paired up in a two lap 

shootout with the winner moving onto the next round 

and the looser taking it back to the pit area. The event 

continues until all cars are eliminated except one with 

that driver being crowned King of the Ring. 

Also, the Jake Davis Memorial will be a part of the 

July 20, 2013 show will be run in memory of the 13 

year old youngster that tragically lost his life in a non 

race related four wheeler accident last October. Davis, 

the son of Woodhull Raceway 370 Modified driver, Bob 

Davis was scheduled to compete in a second family 

owned Modified starting in 2013 after his 14th birthday. 

Jake Davis was also the grandson of Woodhull great, 

Kenny Peoples Sr., as well as the nephew of Kenny 

Peoples Jr., Dave Davis and the cousin of Bruce 

Davis, all current or former Woodhull competitors. In 

memory of Jake, Bryce Davis has been competing in 

Bob Davis’ second machine. 

Gates for the July 20 show open at 4:30 with racing 

at 6:30 pm. For the fourth consecutive year Andy 

Dgien, his family and staff members of Dgien Trucking 

will be at Woodhull showing their support as a nightly

Flocking Alert 

The flamingos are back by popular demand! If you are 

a town of Troupsburg resident, you may find that your 

lawn has been overtaken by pink flamingos at some 

point this summer. If this happens, don’t be alarmed. 

You can get them easily captured and removed by 

making a small donation to the Troupsburg Betterment 

Committee, benefitting Heritage Day 2014; you’ll 

receive full instructions when you are FLOCKED. 

If you are flocked, you may designate the next lawn 

to be flocked, or let the flamingos decide which lawn 

they’d like to flock to next. If you’d like to protect your 

home from the nuisance of these pink birds, you may

For J-T Ag & FFA Tractor Round-Up 

The J-T Ag. Advisory Committee and J-T FFA are 

inviting all area farmers and collectors to bring one or 

more tractors to the Tractor Round-Up on July 27th 

at the J-T Sports Complex/FFA Land Lab in Jasper. 

ALL tractors are welcome, so drive, drag, tow, trailer, 

truck or push your favorite color to the RoundUp for 

all to enjoy. Prizes for biggest, smallest, oldest, newest, 

ugliest, best restoration and President’s choice 

will be awarded. 

The Tractor Round- Up is just one part of the day’s 

activities celebrating the completion of the FFA pole 

barn. Other activities include Skid Steer Rodeo, Fearless 

Farmer Contest, Cow Chip Bingo, silent auction, 

hobby/craft display area and more. Kids can enjoy a 

farm playground, train rides, a lamb round-up competition 

as well as other games. 

All activities begin at noon and everyone is welcome.

It’s generally something simple to figure. If 

you’ve been to lots of doctors already then that’s 

good because those experiences and the medical 

findings can help. 

If you have x-rays and MRI films and additional 

diagnostic reports then that is good too. Bring all 

films and medical information with you. 

If you have a nerve problem, then it is best to 

be evaluated before going on drug medication or 

at least soon into drug therapy. 

If you have already tried chiropractic without 

success, then that can be helpful as well because 

either your problem was not a subluxation, or 

you’ve been over manipulated. A chronic joint 

sprain/strain, no matter if it is to the spine, elbow, 

etc. has to be strengthened correctly or the problem 

will probably worsen. 

If your problem is an unresolved work 

injury, then Dr. Meinsen is a licensed Workers 

Compensation Practitioner and will evaluate your 

problem according to Board rules and bill your 

compensation Insurance Carrier. 

If your insurance is Medicare then your treatment 

fee will be billed to Medicare. 

If your insurance is Medicaid, then you most 

likely are not covered for chiropractic. My initial 

office visit fee is $50. Each treatment after that 

is $35.

Kris Benton of the Troupsburg Betterment Committee

77th Jasper Old Home Day 

A hot and very humid 4th of July did not stop people from coming to Jasper 

to enjoy the 77th Old Home Day, Small Town-Big Surprises. The results for the 

parade float contest were 1st place JT FFA, 2nd place Boyd’s Corner Bible Church 

and 3rd place the Stanford family. 

At the business meeting, our oldest person in attendance was Lee Brutsman, 

youngest was Aubrey Jean Brewer-infant daughter of Colby Brewer and Amy 

Button. The person who traveled the farthest was Tony Skelly(married to the 

former Carol Payne) from California. 

Also during our business meeting, we were honored to acknowledge some very 

deserving members of our community for their contributions. Citizen of the Year 

was presented to Marcia Heintz. The Peter Kelly Memorial Award was presented 

to Marty and Valorie Butler. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to 

Bob and Peg Palmiter. Congratulations and our sincere gratitude to each of you 

for all that you have done and continue to do for our community. 

We hope everyone had a great time and the committee is already working on the 

78th Old Home Day celebration. Please bring your ideas and join us-we need

Austinburg VBS Coming Next Week! 

Get ready for your kids summer to hit overdrive at Austinburg Baptist’s 

VBS “Investigation Destination”! The VBS runs from the 15th of July to the 

19th from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m., with a closing on Sunday at 11am. We take kids 

preK (4 years old) all the way to Seniors in High School. Crafts, snacks, 

skits, games, Bible lessons, memory verses, prizes, and so much more!! We 

also have our bike contest again this year! Details about the contest and 

other exciting events can be found on the new VBS Facebook page called,

Varsity Practice Begins 

Girls varsity soccer practice begins August 19th (Monday). Players should 

report each day with the following: 

1) Soccer cleats and indoors; 2) guards and changes of socks; 3) swimsuit 

and towel (plastic bag); 4) clothing - consider light colors; 5) Individual first 

aid kit (zip lock bag); 6) package of 3 by 5 cards and pen; 7) large water 

container with ice (with name); 8) soccer ball (with name). 

Week 1 - Practice schedule as follows: 

Monday, Aug. 19 - (3-6 and 7-9); Tuesday, Aug. 20 - (3-6 and 7-9); Wednesday,

The J-T Ag Advisory Committee is selling advance tickets 

for their “live” Cow Chip Bingo fund raiser that will be held 

in conjunction with the Pole Barn Open House and Tractor

(7/7/13) 2 Cor. 3:1-18 One sacred thing we do as 

Christians is communion. Think about this. What is 

God’s purpose for you and me No matter your age, 

gender, or anything else, God has a purpose for all 

of us. What is it With all that we attend to each 

day, do you know that God has a purpose for you If 

when we hold the elements of communion and know 

His purpose that would be awesome. God’s purpose 

for us is to be Christ like. Really Christ like, in our 

hearts. Some of us are like our Mom, our Dad, or 

maybe grandparents. We need to be Christ like so 

others can see His refl ection. In Romans 8:29 Paul 

tells us that God predestined us to be conformed 

to the likeness of His Son. In 2 Cor. 3:18 Paul tells 

us that we, with unveiled faces, are to refl ect God’s 

glory. We are supposed to be the good health in a 

sick world. We can’t be if we are only half there. The 

sick world needs to be Christ like and we need to be 

transformed to make this happen. We need to be 

focused, not half-hearted and self-absorbed. Give 

your all to others and be Christ like to them. At the 

Last Supper, Jesus got down and washed the feet 

of His disciples. Can we do this He, who was God, 

served others, can we do any less Our services 

are at 9:30 in the Baptist Church and we welcome 

you to worship with us Sunday morning.

What assurance do 

you have of your salvation 

What evidence

Heaven when you die 

When asked about their 

salvation, many people 

may say that they go to 

church, they’re a good person, prayed a prayer when 

they were younger, give money to a religious or charity 

organization or something like that. These things are 

good but not necessarily evidence of salvation. The 

Bible is clear that there will be evidence in your life that 

you truly are saved. What is the evidence I am glad 

you asked. 

1 John 2:3-6 – Very clearly points out how it is that we 

know that we know Jesus Christ as our Savior. “And 

by this we know that we have come to know him, if we 

keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” 

but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the 

truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him 

truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know 

that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought 

to walk in the same way in which he walked.” Who is 

“him” - from the context of the passage in verse one we 

find that this is Jesus Christ. We see a few things from 

this passage: We are to keep his commandments, keep 

his word, abide in him, walk in the same way in which 

Jesus walked. Jesus is our example for living. 

He also demands that we keep his commandments 

and abide in his word. We know that we know him if we 

keep his commandments. What does it mean to keep 

his commandments To obey the teachings that are in 

the Bible; surely the 10 Commandments, but also all the 

other truths that are presented as the way God designed 

you to live your life, in obedience to him. Take 1 Corinthians 

6:9-10 for some examples (not an exhaustive list) of 

those whose testimony of their life is indicated by being in 

disobedience to God’s word. “Or do you not know that the 

unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God Do not 

be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, 

nor adulterers, nor those who practice homosexuality, nor 

thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor 

swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” You can have 

assurance of your salvation if you have an increasing 

desire to keep the commandments of God, if your life 

indicates you have little or no regard for the commandments 

from God’s word, it is evidence that you are not 

saved and will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Woodhull Seniors Meeting 

The Woodhull area seniors met July 2, 2013 for their 

regular meeting and luncheon. The pledge was led by 

Jean Brate and invocation by Louie Hilborn. We had 46 

seniors that attended our meeting/luncheon. Birthdays 

of the month are Lawrence Thomas, Kevin Thoms, Joni 

McMindes, Ray Dunn, Judy Cooney and Shirley Harris. 

Our anniversaries are Dick and Jeanine Taft and Fred 

& Beverly Conklin. The 50/50 was won by Marvin Miles 

and the door prize was won by Fran Long. 

We had Eric Tyner from the Senior Investigators Office 

of the Steuben County Sheriff Dept. and Sgt. Brown, as 

our special guest speakers. Our next meeting is August 

6th at noon, so throw your favorite dish together and 

come join us for our picnic at the Woodhull Fireman’s 

Field, behind the Fire Dept. Bring a gift, to donate to 

our Auction...going to be a fun time! 

We went on a trip to Auburn to see Singing in the 

Rain, at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse and had an 

enjoyable day and our next trip is in September, to an 

Animal Safari.

Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity 

is having an information/application workshop on July 

23rd at 6:30 pm at the Addison Community Center. 

The workshop is for lower income families who 

are interested in becoming a Habitat for Humanities

Judy was born in Wellsboro, PA on Sept. 13, 1945, the daughter of Harley H. and 

Waneta L.Graham Aldrich. She was a graduate of Elkland High School. 

On July 24, 1982, Judy and Francis E. “Chauncey” Overhiser were married in Bath. 

Judy had at one time owned and operated a chain of pizza shops in Bath, Hammondsport 

and Watkins Glen. She then worked for several years at Perry & Thompson 

Ford in Bath and retired from Artistic Greeting Co. in Elmira. 

Judy was known as the “Cat Lady of Curtiss Ave.”. She always had a love for 

cats, hers’ as well as all in the neighborhood. Judy had a great love for all her family 

and friends. She enjoyed most of all spending time with her family, especially her 

grandchildren. She always looked forward to her visits from her great grandchildren, 

particularly Arianna. 

Surviving Judy are her husband, Chauncey Overhiser of Hammondsport, her 

children and their spouses, Carmell and Ann Cericola of Baldwinsville, NY and Eric 

and Kelie Rumberger of Wise, VA, her grandchildren, Malia Glover, Kelly Glover, 

Kyle Rumberger, Punono Shamwell, Kwynn Rumberger, Kahakea Theard and Ericka 

Rumberger, her great grandchildren, Arianna Marquez, Xavier Shamwell and 

Alexander Theard, her brother, Dewaine (Christine) Aldrich of Bath, NY, her sister, 

Sheila (George) Flynn of Elkland, PA, her sister in law, Sara Overhiser of Bath and 

several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her Aunt, Alberta Bost and her nephew, 

Scott Aldrich. 

Friends called on Sunday, July 7 at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 

Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services were conducted there on Monday with Rev. 

Donald Peek officiating. 

Burial followed in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, NY. 

Memorials in Judy’s name may be made to the Fingerlakes SPCA.

Rudolph H. Hauptman 

Rudolph H. Hauptman, 79, of 3 Meadow Lane, Painted Post, NY, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 

Corning Hospital after a brief illness. 

Born in Corning, NY, September 20, 1933, he was the son of Rudolph E. & Doris M. Otte Hauptman. 

He was a member of the Painted Post Lions Club, the Chemung Valley Region Antique Car Club and was an avid 

stamp collector and amateur photographer. 

A graduate of Corning Free Academy, he attended Alfred State College and Corning Community College. 

A former employee of Corning Hospital-Founders Pavilion, he retired as the Comptroller of Founders Pavilion in 1988. 

He married Beverly Herrington April 15, 1967, she survives. 

Also surviving are his brother, Robert J. Hauptman of Painted Post, NY, his special nephew, Erich (Beth) Hauptman, 

niece, Marisa (Rick) Elston, his niece, Andrea (Rob) Dipold and nephew, Marc (Denise) Pelych, special sisters-in-law, 

Ina (Bud) Cramer & Barbara (Ray) Morseman, brother-in-law, Donald Herrington, and very good friend, Arnold Allen. 

His sister, Ruth Pelych, is deceased. 

A celebration of Rudy’s life will take place 1pm -3pm, Sunday, July 21st at the Forest View-Gang Mills Fire Station, 

Forest Drive, Painted Post, NY with remembrances at 2pm. 

Refreshments will be provided.

covers, veteran options, Medicaid eligibility for a nursing 

home, long term care insurances, and planning options for

Quality Host Families Needed Locally 

Ever think about hosting a foreign exchange student As a host parent of 5 exchange students 

so far, and two more arriving in August, I can honestly tell you it has been one of the 

best things I have ever done. My only regret is that I did not start earlier. So let me tell you 

a little bit about our program. Academic Year in America has been placing foreign exchange 

students in quality host families for over 30 years. In this area, we have placed students 

in Hornell, Canisteo, Hammondsport, Corning and Jasper-Troupsburg. Our local program 

has been visited twice by a representative from the State Department and given the highest 

marks, which is not something a lot of exchange programs can claim. 

Locally, we like to place students who are part of two prestigious scholarship programs, 

the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) and the Youth Exchange and Study (YES). These 

students have competed against thousands of other students world-wide to earn a special 

scholarship year in America. As part of this program, while in the United States, they must 

complete at least 50 hours of community service (most do 100), learn about diversity, free 

enterprise and democracy, and do presentations in the schools and communities. 

This spring you may have seen the article in the Hornell Evening Tribune about one of these 

students. His name is Carlos from Indonesia and he held a walk a thon at Jasper-Troupsburg, 

to raise money for St. Jude’s Hospital. Other scholarship students helped out with youth 

soccer, worked with children with disabilities, even helped the Finger Lakes SPCA. 

They are honor students, respectful, kind and very bright. I would love to talk with you

White will team up with 

Lamb and Webster of Woodhull, NY to present 

the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League at the historic 

Steuben County facility. 

The 2011 event marked the first time in over a 

decade and a half that the ground pounding pulling 

tractors and two wheel drive trucks made an 

appearance at Woodhull and to put it mildly, the 

event was an overwhelming success. 

Representatives of both Lamb and Webster 

along with management team of the Woodhull 

Raceway immediately went to work on making the 

2012 event even a more successful engagement. 

Mother Nature stood in the way of the originally 

scheduled Sunday afternoon July event, however 

a month later the show was made up on a Friday 

night and to put it mildly the event was a huge 

success prompting representatives of both organizations 

to schedule to 2K13 pull under the lights 

on Friday night, July 26. 

“The staff of Lamb and Webster are second to 

none stated track owner, Ted White. Whenever 

we get jammed up with an equipment or parts 

issue at the track we can always count on L & W 

to help out. We have a tremendous relationship 

with them and it is a perfect fit having Lamb and 

Webster involved with the Truck and Tractor Pull. 

The last year’s they provided all the manpower 

and equipment to completely build and maintain 

the pulling surface and they did it from scratch 

just hours prior to the start time. In addition the 

Lucas Pulling League is top notch, a professionally 

run operation. They come in here and put on 

a tremendous show for the fans.” 

Gates for the Friday, July 26 event will open at 

5:30 pm with the first pull going off at approximately 

7:00 pm.

Tighe was installed as the President of the New York State Association of 

Fire Chiefs.

Praying is good for the soul and therapeutic for our personal well-being. Developing a prayer 

life helps give us the grace to accept things in this life as they are, and the hope of God’s mercy 

toward us in the next. Each day we should thank our Lord for all the days of life He has given 

us. We should realize that, a part from God, everything else is of little value. If all the sufferings 

and joys of our past draw us closer to our Father in Heaven, they were of immeasurable value. 

Praying for the needs of others as well as praying for our own personal desires is important in 

our prayer life. Intercessory prayer for our loved ones and friends is not only favored by God, it 

also helps to make us mindful of the needs of others. We have a wonderful God and although we 

are not always able to understand His decisions and methods, we know He loves us and wants 

only the best for us.
