Yeaples Deploying To
Kunsan, South Korea
It’s that dreaded time again and if you’re a military
parent, you already know what I’m referring to. Our
son, Airman First Class, William Scott Yeaples, BMT
graduate of Lackland Air Force Base November
2009 will soon be deploying for his second year
long tour to Kunsan, South Korea. The decision to
do so was voluntary and based on his love of the
country and people.
As his parents, Barry and Peggy Mather, we are
both proud of his decision to serve and apprehensive
because of the times in which we are living, so it goes
without saying that we are always coveting prayer
for his safety. Scott will be home over Memorial Day
and if you happen to see him be sure to say hello.
Opportunity of a Lifetime Starts Now for Local Student
When looking back on life, May 4, 2012 may very well stand out as a day to be remembered
for Jasper-Troupsburg student Leann Green. A member
of the JT FFA Chapter, Leann was elected to serve for a
year as a New York FFA State Officer.
The FFA, a national youth organization, once known
as the Future Farmers of America offers leadership and
career development opportunities for students interested
in any agriculturally related career. One in five American
careers is founded in agriculture and students studying
agricultural education in New York high schools are preparing
for careers that are essential (food safety), current
(“Green” technology and renewable fuels) and lucrative
(veterinary science). As an elected state officer, Leann
will have the chance to promote these opportunities
throughout the state to students, school administrators,
businesses and legislators. As a state FFA officer, Leann
will receive over 250 hours of training and spend more
than a month on the road over her summer vacation. Going along with the convention theme
“Signature of Success” Leann will have the opportunity to impact the over 4000 FFA members
state wide. She will be visiting local schools across the state, facilitating workshops and giving
speeches to political, educational, and commercial groups interested in agriculture and education.
Service to the NYS FFA is not new to Leann. She has been active in her home chapter
at JT, serving as secretary, president, and reporter throughout her high school career. Leann
was very active during her tenure as 2011-2012 District 8 President. She visited every chapter
in the district, traveled to several chapters across the state with the 2011-2012 State Officer
Team, participated in the Governmental Awareness Event in Albany, helped organize the visit of
National FFA President Riley Pagget to JT, and was involved in countless committee meetings
and workshops. The leadership skills developed throughout membership in the FFA lead to a
talent for speaking, knowledge of agriculture and the FFA and a passion for servant leadership.
“The FFA prepares young people to be successful and career-driven young leaders,” Juleah
Tolosky, youth program specialist at Cornell University said. “State FFA Officers are often the
ones training their peers to become those very things… their responsibilities are both significant
and challenging.” Still on an adrenaline high, Leann begins her year of service with a kick-off
training less than a week after winning the election. Time-management, public speaking, key
message identification, and character-driven decision making will all be explored in depth
throughout the four day conference at the Oswegatchie Educational Center in Croghan, NY.
The next day it will be back to school with essays to write and homework to submit. It’s a
whirlwind experience but one that will be well worth the challenge.
After all, any FFA member knows being elected a state officer is the opportunity of a lifetime.

Volunteer Drivers Needed
There are many senior citizens in the Addison area: approximately 50 homes receive
home delivered meals, throughout the year. ProAction provides this service,
which is contracted by the Steuben County Offi ce for the Aging. We provide a hot
nutritious noon time meal and a cold evening meal if requested, to homebound
seniors. Currently we are in need of volunteer drivers to help in these deliveries,
and maintain services in the area. Volunteering is a great way to meet folks and
give your community support. Delivery usually takes an hour out of your busy day
and you can be reimbursed for your mileage, as well as receive a complimentary
meal for completing your deliveries. This is a great way to provide a special service
to the seniors in your community.
Call 607-377-9951 if you are interested in helping.
Volunteers Make the Fair!
The success of any event, be it organizing a
community picnic or a week-long festival, depends
on many volunteers lending a helping hand. The
Tioga County Fair is no exception. The efforts of
volunteers are refl ected in every facet of the Fair,
from lining up the various competitions that take
place during the week-long extravaganza, right
down to the smallest of details such as fi lling and
placing the colorful planters of fl owers throughout
the fairgrounds. From judges to clean-up crews,
volunteers are needed to make the Fair a success!
Have a knack for organizing displays? Possess
a talent or skill that you’d like to share with others?
Do you enjoy meeting people? Perhaps you have
ideas for activities or demonstrations that would
enhance the Fair. Or maybe you just have some
time and ability to help where needed. If so, there’s
a place for you at the Tioga County Fair. Whether
you wish to help out by remaining behind-thescenes
or you are a “take-charge” kind of person,
volunteering your time at the Tioga County Fair can
be a rewarding and full-fi lling experience.
This year the Fair takes place August 6 through
11 and volunteers have already been hard at work
organizing contests, games, shows and displays
for the public to enjoy. For more information on
how you can help make the 2012 Tioga County Fair
a great event this summer, call the Fair Secretary
at 570-537-3196.
The Fairgrounds is located in Whitneyville, just
off of Route 6, midway between Mansfi eld and
Wellsboro. Further information is available at the
Tioga County Fair’s website, tiogacountyfair.com.
Ribbon Cutting for Picnic Pavilion at Addison Boat Launch
on the Canisteo River
The public and the news media are invited to a 1 p.m., May 17 ribbon cutting for a new public picnic pavilion
at the Addison boat launch at the confl uence of the Canisteo River and Tuscarora Creek in the village
f Addison. The pavilion is named Wade’s Landing in honor of the Wade family that has owned and run
usinesses in the village since 1855.
The 26-foot-by-26-foot wooden pavilion features a concrete pad, blue steel roof, two picnic tables and two
arbeque grills. Volunteers began building the structure in April and completed it in early May. The spacious
3-acre boat launch on Cleveland
Drive has a 25-vehicle parking area,
additional picnic tables, benches
and grills and an information kiosk
with a map of the Chemung River
Watershed. The launch offers a
beautiful view of the waterways
and a pair of nesting Ospreys a few
hundred yards away.
The $23,000 pavilion project is
the result of a cooperative effort
between Addison Mayor Ray Walch,
the village and the Friends of the
Chemung River Watershed (River
Friends). “It’s another beautiful attraction
for the village where families
and friends can come for civic meetings,
family gatherings or just a place for someone to sit and think,” Walch said. “It’s a great place where
you can go to have fun and make a lot of memories.’
River Friends secured a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger
Lakes to help fi nance the project. Local businesses, groups and individuals donated time, money and materials
to build the pavilion. “What our community has accomplished with this project epitomizes small town
America,” said Hal Sisson the facilitator for the village’s Trees and Parks Committee, who helped build the
avilion and designed its signs. “Nobody here keeps a ledger but when the need is cast there is no lack of
ant.”
Speakers at the ribbon-cutting include Mayor Walch, Sisson and Jim Pfi ffer, executive director of River
riends. Wade family members and local and state elected offi cials have also been invited to speak. “The
avilion is a community project, built by the community to be used by the community, said Pfiffer. “The project
as successful because everyone chipped in – individuals, school groups, businesses, civic organizations
nd nonprofi t organizations. Addison now has a beautiful place for paddling, picnics and enjoying riverside
ature.” Other community contributors include:
Wades Building Supply, Inc. in Addison contributed supplies and materials for the project.
Katie’s Koncrete in Addison donated concrete for the pad.
The Addison Grange, Middletown Historical Society and the Addison Girl Scouts donated money to buy
Part V: 1930’s and 1940’s
Submitted by: Larry Mundy
{A belated thank-you to contributors Floyd and Nell Bliss of 52 Steuben Street for
providing information on the George C. Howard Dry Goods Store at 23 Main Street
c. 1885-1909}
The 1930’s were time of local high school team completion. There was, also, an
adult Tri-County league with Addison, Elkland, Lawrenceville, Galeton, Lindley, Coudersport,
Nelson, Tioga, Knoxville, Bath, Hornell, Canisteo, and Painted Post participating.
That team in 1933 consisted of Harold “Muddy” Stowell (catcher); Harrison “Red” Hoyt
(outfi eld); Henry “Hank” Riffl e (outfi eld); George LeChance (catcher); Wendell “Jack”
Hewson (Captain and 2nd. Base); Phillip “P. K.” Hickey (3rd. Base); Leon “Pa” Riker
(1st. Base); Donald “Punk” Grange (Pitcher); Joseph “Bullet” Hopper (Pitcher); John
“Bunter” Grange (outfi eld); Ed. Morris (Manager); Harlow Brennan (outfi elder); Maurice
“Comer” Robbins (shortstop). Umpires were Mr. Mann, and Mr. Lesneski. Burrell Vastbinder
was the league secretary. No specifi c “fi eld of dreams” has been identifi ed. It
has been assumed that the playing fi eld was at the newly built (1927-1928) high school
fi eld. [Contributor Martha Weale remembers the fi eld as being out in the general area
of the Addison Central School District Business Offi ce/Instant Heat Pellet plant/D. and
W. service. Any more help about this period and/or teams and members of teams
would be appreciated.]
The 1940’s were basically high school team competition due to World War II. Out of
this from Addison came James Raymond Greengrass. He was born at Addison, New
York on October 24th, 1927, the son of and Jennie Greengrass of Grove Street. He
played high school baseball from 1941 to 1944, and was a star infi elder. During the
summers, and prior to his signing with the New York Yankees organization, he played
with several local semi-pro teams including the Corning Merchants.
Paul M. “Wild” Wildrick, a wholesale candy business dealer in Addison, recommended
him to the Yankees. He received a tryout in 1944, and was signed to a contract
with Wellsville of the Class D Pony League after his junior year in high school when he
was 16 years of age. He played second and third.
With Wellsville, again in 1945, Jim had a fi ne year having a .349 average. Then
came two years in the Army. (1946-1947).
Greengrass played third base for Binghamton in 1948 and 1949. In 1950, with the
What girl doesn’t
dream of becoming Royalty?
The Tioga County
Fair offers young ladies
the chance to fulfi ll that
dream – on the Tioga
County level, of course,
by vying to become the
next Tioga County Fair
Queen. Young ladies
between the ages of 16
and 20, as of June 1,
2012, are invited to enter
the Tioga County Fair
Queen Contest. The
winner will represent the
be eligible to compete
at the State Fair Queen
Contest in Hershey in
January, 2013. Winner
Candidates must
must be single, never
been married, have no
The winner must be
available to reign at the
Tioga County Fair, which
takes place August 6-11,
2012. Meeting people
and having fun are all
part of the Fair Queen’s
agenda as her duties
range from passing out
ribbons and trophies to welcoming dignitaries visiting the Tioga County
Fair.
Judging is based on an essay written in 300 words or less on “What
My Fair Means to My Community.” Candidates will be expected to
present a 3-5 minute speech on the topic “Why You Should Come to
My Fair.” Other qualities judged will be poise, neatness and cleanliness,
knowledge of fairs).
Applications for entry are included in the Fair books distributed at
local banks and businesses, on the Fair’s web site, tiogacountyfair.com.
Community Church of Woodhull
Submitted by: Sharon Calkins
(5/6/12) Hebrews 9:23-28 Verses 27 & 28: Just as man is destined to die
once, and after that to face judgement so Christ was sacrifi ced once to take away
the sin of many people. How many of you have had to change an appointment
because of a confl ict or weather? There is one appointment we will not change
or cancel. In Hebrews we are told we have an appointment to die. Everyone
has the appointment of death. We might not like it but we can’t change it either.
It hurts to say good-bye to a loved one. A very special person in our church had
his appointment this week. Jesus wept when Lazarus died and it is alright if we
weep. The redeeming point is that we know our loved ones are spending eternity
with Jesus and we will see them again. We have communion out of necessity to
remind us what Jesus did for us. He made the ultimate sacrifi ce. Our eternity in
Heaven was bought and paid for by His shed blood. All we have to do is accept
in our hearts what Jesus did for us. Don’t try to make the bible complicated. Accepting
His gift of salvation is no different than accepting a gift from a friend. We
can either accept it or say “No, I don’t want it.” We are not “good” enough to go
to Heaven, but Jesus paid for us to go. Accepting Christ doesn’t make us perfect,
it makes us forgiven and redeemed. We can strive to be better by giving up the
sins that separate us from Him. Are you going to accept Jesus? We have and
appointment. Where’s your heart and who does it belong to? Our services are
at 9:30 and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday.

Repentance Is Good For The Soul
Psalm 32 is a wonderful psalm about the forgiveness that God displays when we are repentant for our sins. It says in part: “Happy are those
whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. Happy is the man whom the Lord does not accuse of doing wrong and who is free
from all deceit. When I did not confess my sins I was worn out from crying all day long. Then I confessed my sins to you; I did not conceal
my wrong doings. I decided to confess them to you and you forgave all my sins.” This psalm refl ects the great love that God has for us;
however, when we sin and have no remorse, we are opposing God. It is important for us to be sorry and repentant for our wrongdoing as
soon as we realize that we have sinned. We should ask our Heavenly Father for forgiveness, make an honest effort to refrain from sinning
and, whenever possible, try to make amends for whatever wrong we have done. The Bible tells us that God is ever ready to forgive our
transgressions, and keep us in His unmerited favor.
