Community College. Nearly 30 teachers from school districts in Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties
participated in the professional development program geared towards grades 5 through 12 teachers. The
MST Institute is designed to improve professional content knowledge and enhance teacher competency
in the areas of math, science, and technology.
The keynote speaker for the institute was Herb Gross, the founding math department chairman at
Corning Community College. In his presentation, Dr. Gross addressed mathematics and how it is the
gateway to science, technology and engineering. Since his retirement, Dr. Gross has devoted his efforts
to working with elementary and middle school teachers to help them achieve success for their students
in better internalizing mathematics.
The schedule of events included classroom sessions taught by Corning Community College faculty
and covered topics including fun with physics, tangible mathematics, and Time Engineers software. Also
included in the schedule were local business tours to see how the information is applied and the skills
necessary for employment in the fi eld. The teachers enjoyed tours to the Cornell NanoScale Science &
Technology Facility, Eaton Corporation, Robert Packer Hospital, and CAF USA.
Some comments from teachers who participated included: “Very informative and helpful in learning
how to help kids choose a career path.” And “The tours were great! I learned a tremendous amount of
information applicable to teach students.”
Next year’s institute is scheduled for July 8-12, 2013. For more information, contact the coordinator for
Steuben Teen Pregnancy
Prevention Task Force Changes
Name to INSPIRE
The Steuben Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force
is excited to announce that, effective immediately, it
has changed its name to INSPIRE. Leadership of the
coalition made the decision in order to better explain
the broader reach and focus on wellness that they have
taken over the years.
Since its inception, INSPIRE, an initiative of the Steuben
Rural Health Network at the Institute for Human
Services, has been dedicated to facilitating communication
and awareness about teen pregnancy and STD
prevention in the region. Over the past few years, it has
begun broadening its purpose to include programming
and discussion of teen reproductive health, mental
health, physical health & nutrition, substance abuse,
and healthy relationships.
Although the coalition name and the spectrum of
issues covered in the purpose have changed, the
commitment to providing collaborative efforts to all
parties involved has not. Moving forward, INSPIRE
will continue to serve as a broad-based, coordinated
community effort in order to promote teen health and
wellness in the Southern Tier.
Outdoors
With An Easy
Summer
Picnic
(NAPSA)-As the
weather heats up, picnics
offer the perfect
outdoor activity for family,
friends and foodies
alike. A meal under the
sun provides a picturesque
setting to impress
loved ones with an onthe-go
gourmet feast
while making the most
of your time outdoors.
Any picnic pro knows
that a great meal includes
seasonal, easy
dishes that celebrate the
season without causing
extra work or hassle.
For many, packing
food for travel and anticipating
the heat can
put limitations on picnic
dishes. Chef Edward
Leonard, Certifi ed Master
Chef and Le Cordon
Bleu executive chef,
offers his own picnic
pointers to help anyone
create the perfect alfresco
meal.
“Everyone loves a
picnic, but eating the
standard sandwich can
take the excitement out
of it,” said Chef Leonard.
“To make the most of
your picnic experience,
it’s essential to think
about featuring seasonal
foods that celebrate
summer.”
Le Cordon Bleu
chef instructors suggest
keeping your meal
light with plenty of salads
and fruit. The chefs
recommend making a
watermelon and feta
salad or creating an
heirloom tomato salad
with fresh herbs like basil
or sage. For protein,
focus on meats that are
cooked slowly at a low
temperature because
they tend to keep well.
Try cold pulled pork
or roast beef. When it
comes to side dishes,
consider cultured, pasteurized
ingredients-like
sour cream or Greek
yogurt-for the base of
any sauces. This will
eliminate any issues
with using egg-based
products that can go
bad in the heat.
“Picnics are a great
time to try out new seasonal
dishes and enjoy
fresh, local produce,”
said Chef Leonard. “We
teach our students to
appreciate local ingredients
and fi nd the best
ways to showcase the
fl avors.”
Students at Le Cordon
Bleu learn the foundational
techniques necessary
to use their skills
and passion to create
exceptional dishes. Re-
ADDISON POST Saturday, JULY 28, 2012 Page 6
Davis Piano Studio News
The students of the Davis Piano Studio are raising
money for an upcoming trip to New York City on
November 10, 2012. We would like to say thank you
to everyone who has supported our efforts, and let you
know of some fundraisers that we are currently running.
1. On Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 8am until
10am, the studio will be hosting a Flapjack Fundraiser
at the Applebee’s in Hornell, New York. My students
and their families have tickets for sale now and they
will be the ones to greet you, seat you, and serve you
once you get to the restaurant. My kids can’t wait to
help you have a wonderful breakfast experience.
2. The studio just recently opened an account at the
Beartown Beverage and Redemption Center, located
right next to Beartown Peaches-n-Cream in Gang Mills.
If you have bottles and cans to redeem, you can drop
them off at the redemption center and ask that your
refund be put in the Davis Piano Studio account. If you
do not want to take your cans and bottles back, we will
gladly do it for you. You can either drop them off at one
of two drop sites or call for a pick up.
3. On Saturday, September 8, 2012 the studio will be
participating in the Woodhull Community Days celebration.
We will be providing children’s games and face
painting. We will also be hosting a basket raffl e. Come
enjoy a day in Woodhull. The parades, the food, and
the entertainment will provide something for people of
all ages all day long. The studio will also be having a
rummage sale/bake sale the same day at 6549 State
Route 417. If you are interested in more information
on any of these fundraisers, please call Kathy Knowles
(7/22/12) Psalm 21: I lift my eyes to the hills-where
does my help come from? My help comes from the
Lord. Try lifting your eyes to the “hills” and see God.
Look at 3 things. (1) Look at God, the Creator of all
things. He’s the Righteous Judge who loves you and
me completely! He knows all about us, even the ugly
stuff, and loves us anyway. Nothing affects His love
for us. Some kids lie to their parents because they are
afraid of getting caught. Maybe they’re afraid of losing
their parent’s love. (2) Look at yourself. You aren’t in
charge and not the center of the universe. “Look at me,
see how good I am.” Some think that nobody cares
and they are worthless. Both feelings are toxic. We
need to look to God and see ourselves in relation to
Him. He made you/me and loves us unconditionally.
(3) Look at others. We do this all the time. We judge
their words, appearance and actions. God forgive
us. No-one appointed us to be judge. In India they
have the cast system. We sometimes do the same by
judging others. Our only thought should be, “What do
they need and what can I do to help them?” When we
don’t do this, it breaks God’s heart. Where does my
help come from? My help comes from the Lord. Our
services are at 9:30 and we welcome you to worship
with us Sunday morning.
Woodhull TOPS
(7/19/12) Last week a comical skit was presented. It was a conversation between a doctor and
his patient. The patient asked “How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?” The
doctor said “Well, if you have one body and you have fat, your ratio is one
to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to two, etc.” The whole
conversation was a spoof on what a person should and shouldn’t do and
eat. Patient: “Is swimming good for you?” Doctor: “If swimming good for
you, explain whale to me.” After the skit, we talked about what we learned.
It was funny and fun. Our chapter meets Thursday mornings from 9-10
in the Woodhull Town Hall after a confidential weigh-in from 8-8:45. We
welcome you to join us to see if we can help you learn how to Take Off
Pounds Sensibly.
Corning Retirees Meeting
As retirees look ahead to the Medicare choices to be considered in the
mid-October to mid-December window for making changes, they might find
the Corning Retirees Group program for August 8 a good one to attend.
The meeting will be held, as usual, in the Riverfront Café from 10 to 11 a.m.
The group’s guest speaker will be local financial advisor Nancy A Socha,
CFP, who notes that what to do about the Medicare program and possible
supplements going forward is a question she hears frequently of late. She
will address that topic with a PowerPoint presentation and will answer questions
from retirees afterward. Nancy is president of Nancy A. Socha & Associates,
the financial planning and investment advisory firm she founded
in 1983.
Retirees can park free in the company’s employee parking garage west
of the Arch.

Task Force
Changes
Name to
INSPIRE
The Steuben Teen
Pregnancy Prevention
Task Force is
excited to announce
that, effective immediately, it has changed its name to INSPIRE. Leadership of the coalition made the
decision in order to better explain the broader reach and focus on wellness that they have taken over
the years.
Since its inception, INSPIRE, an initiative of the Steuben Rural Health Network at the Institute for Human
Services, has been dedicated to facilitating communication and awareness about teen pregnancy
and STD prevention in the region. Over the past few years, it has begun broadening its purpose to include
programming and discussion of teen reproductive health, mental health, physical health & nutrition, substance
abuse, and healthy relationships.
Although the coalition name and the spectrum of issues covered in the purpose have changed, the
commitment to providing collaborative efforts to all parties involved has not. Moving forward, INSPIRE
will continue to serve as a broad-based, coordinated community effort in order to promote teen health and
wellness in the Southern Tier. For more information about INSPIRE, please contact the Steuben Rural
Health Network at 607-776-9467 x-226.
Math, Science, and Technology (MST) Summer
Teachers’ Institute at Corning Community College
The 2012 Math, Science, and Technology (MST) Summer Teachers’ Institute
was recently held at Corning Community College as well as at various
industries and facilities throughout the region. The institute is sponsored by
Corning Incorporated, GST BOCES, participating school districts, and Corning
Community College. Nearly 30 teachers from school districts in Chemung,
Schuyler, and Steuben counties participated in the professional development
program geared towards grades 5 through 12 teachers. The MST Institute is
designed to improve professional content knowledge and enhance teacher
competency in the areas of math, science, and technology.
The keynote speaker for the institute was Herb Gross, the founding math
department chairman at Corning Community College. In his presentation, Dr.
Gross addressed mathematics and how it is the gateway to science, technology
and engineering. Since his retirement, Dr. Gross has devoted his efforts
to working with elementary and middle school teachers to help them achieve
success for their students in better internalizing mathematics.
The schedule of events included classroom sessions taught by Corning
Community College faculty and covered topics including fun with physics,
tangible mathematics, and Time Engineers software. Also included in the
schedule were local business tours to see how the information is applied and
the skills necessary for employment in the fi eld. The teachers enjoyed tours
to the Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology Facility, Eaton Corporation,
Robert Packer Hospital, and CAF USA.
Some comments from teachers who participated included: “Very informative
and helpful in learning how to help kids choose a career path.” And “The
tours were great! I learned a tremendous amount of information applicable
to teach students.”
Next year’s institute is scheduled for July 8-12, 2013. For more information,
for the institute,
ADDISON POST Saturday, JULY 28, 2012 Page 11
Letters to the Editor Policy
The Addison Post encourages members of the
community to tell us their thoughts on issues of
public importance, not personal matters. Written
articles or letters to the editor should be typed or
neatly printed.
Letters that are fewer than 300 words are preferred,
but longer letters will be printed at a cost of 15¢
per word over 300. Letters may be mailed, faxed,
dropped off or emailed, however every letter MUST
be signed and include an address and phone number
for verification, or it will not be printed.
Letters may be edited for space considerations.
The publication of any letter is at the discretion of
the Editor. All letters become the property of The
Addison Post and cannot be returned.
Dear Editor
Blame, Fame, Sane
Rain again isn’t the end of sins nor does it mean
we’re yet all forgiven.
Those causing our weather extremes aren’t repentent
publicly or accepting any responsibilities personally if
they were you’d see um changing their ways attempting
to undo the curses they wrought on us all but oh
no none of that.
What we do have however is enough realizing by those
who are doubting of how far their willing to stand behind
gov. Endorsed perversions, media embraced misprogramming
and educated idiosies trying to convince impressionable
young minds to follow depravity wherever
they lead. Thus by the time cause effects pricing ie.
before next harvest season depleted revenue streams
will dry up further. Those moderately observing the folly
of apathy deserve where man’s governance is heading.
Honesty will sink in eventually though secretly for
many weak kneed hiney kissers a feared of truth, void
of reality and ignorant of what’s prophesied to come.
Drying June’s burnt July’s prosperity + August’s scant
crops = Sept. soul harvesting.
Anyone with traveling experience on foot or in close
contact with people from other states knows NYer’s are
admired looked up to and revered for notariety of leading,
blessings, famous for having it all out here by what
they’ve heard of us, naturally then last June’s NY going
the path towards Sodom leaves them all a bit expectant
of Gamora’s other shoe dropping next.
So 2012’s drought will be remembered for pointing
many away from following fools they know not. The
springs of reliable water, the fresh mountain airs 4 directing
us out under leaves he shares as wrath’s doles
out rebukes at earths wayward soles to erase their
crooked existance we all for a time must bear. The
sooner iradication consensus is established the better
we’ll live, blameless is to be freed of judgement.
Hillbilly hermit,
Pete’s Sly
Dear Editor,
Many thanks to all the people who made Spirit in
the Valley such a success this year. This was the 3rd
particpants and sponsors. Thank you to all the member
churches who worked together to make SpiV happen.
Your time, efforts, and desire to be a team made it a
pleasure.
Thank you to all of our sponsors whose generosity
provided for all the give away items. Our sponsors were
Brownies Mini Mart, Countryside Propane, Dininny’s
Dairy, Towner Tree Farms, Got Your Back Chiropractic,
Sound Works,Cornerstone Training Stables,and
Christian Hope Center.
Thank you to all the service organizations who offered
their time and freely gave of their resources. They were
Child Evangelism Fellowship, The Gideons, The Addison
Grange, and Living Waters Fellowship. Thank
you to Uncle Mike’s for bringing the Hamster Races.
Thank you to the bands who came to play, lead us
in worship and sacrifi ce their time for the community.
They are The Good Samaritans, Road to Beautiful, Lift
Up the Light, Tens Days, and The Cry of the Scape
Goat.
We couldn’t have done any of this without the grace
of God and an awesome sound crew. Many thanks to
Kirk Beaver, Dan Loucks , and Duane Dunning.
Words aren’t enough to express our gratitude to everyone
for all that was done to offer this event to the
Addison community free of charge.
Help Your House of Worship; It Has Always Helped You
If you have been attending your House of Worship for any length of time, you know you have been doing it
for a reason. Just being there has helped you through many a crisis or sorrow in your life. You have benefi ted
greatly from the inspiring sermons, and perhaps you have had an occasional talk with your clergyman
about some problem. Now, if at all possible, you should do something in return. Whatever you are able to
do, such as making phone calls, arranging a potluck dinner, helping with a cleanup project, etc., would be
welcome. It will help you to repay all the blessings and guidance you have received there over the years.
