Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service Celebrates
100 Years Serving Our Community
Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service cordially invites the community to join us on Sunday, September 16th from 1:00 p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. as we celebrate 100 years of serving our Corning area families.
Entertainment and refreshments will be provided under the big tent in the parking lot. The Corning American Legion J.P. Eaton
Post #746 Ritual Team will demonstrate how they honor our country’s fallen service men at 2:00 & 4:00 p.m. Heavenly Angels will
explain the significance of and do a “Dove Release” once each hour. Additionally, there will be exhibits of Steuben County handcrafted
Amish caskets, vintage funeral memorabilia, and contemporary funeral practice. Funeral Service professionals will be there
to provide information on such topics as “Green Burials”, Cremation Options, AfterCare, Pre Arranging, and NY State Funeral Laws.
Phillips Funeral Home was originally established as the Stimson Undertaking Parlor founded by Irene and Dan Stimson in 1912.
Within a year, they contracted to build a new funeral home at its present location at 17 West Pulteney Street. The Stimsons were
the talk of the town and were quite impressive driving their fancy new $3000 hand-carved hearse, drawn by a pair of fine black
horses, Irene in a black taffeta dress, large plumed hat, and high button shoes and Dan in a top hat and cutaway coat.
The early years were lean. The cost of a funeral was $87. Dan branched out into other business areas, which left Irene to do the
embalming and load caskets and funeral equipment onto wagons to take to churches and homes. At that time, it was the custom
to do the embalming at the home of the deceased and leave the body in bed until the day of the funeral. The remains would then
be placed in the casket and taken to the church or place of service.
In 1919, people began to use the funeral home itself for funerals requiring the first of many additions to the building. In 1921, Irene
took over the business herself. As she continued to expand and make changes, she became recognized as a pioneer woman
in funeral service, not only in Corning but on a state and national level as well.
Irene later married Dr. Kent W. Phillips, a local dentist and changed the name of the business to Phillips Funeral Home. She continued
to expand and over the years added funeral homes in Painted Post and Big Flats, both of which have since been closed.
She was the first woman to serve on the executive board of the New York State Funeral Directors Association and in 1937 became
the first woman to be accepted into membership of the National Selected Morticians, an international organization with a limited
membership at that time of 800. Irene’s daughter, Shirley (Sutherland McIntyre), joined the business in 1945 and continued its
operation until 1990 when it was sold to David and Jon Carpenter. Since then, the funeral home has been totally remodeled and
a major addition added. An apartment building at 9 West Pulteney Street was torn down to make room for a serenity park and
additional parking. In the spirit of Irene and Shirley, the firm continued to make advances by being one of the first in the state to
introduce technology into funeral service. In the late 90’s a website was developed that included obituaries and a place for friends
to “Light A Candle” or send a message of condolence to the family of the deceased. Phillips was the first to introduce memorial
DVDs which allow friends and family the opportunity to view a celebration of the life of their loved one through a slideshow of
pictures set to music. And for those friends and family members who are unable to attend a service, Phillips offers the option of
viewing the service live on-line. According to David Carpenter, President, “Funeral service has changed drastically in the past ten
years. Gone are the two-day wakes and large services. Larger visitations are most often followed by smaller services. Today more
people are arranging their services in advance. Each year there is an increasing number of non-religious services with no clergy
present. Cremation has increased from 18% in 1990 to around 45% today. In spite of the many changes in form, most people
understand the importance of some type of memorial to honor, remember, and most poignantly celebrate the life of their loved one.
One thing that has not changed is that people still hurt and grieve at the loss of a loved one. Today, most libraries are filled with
books and videos dedicated to helping those left behind deal with their grief. Phillips has an extensive lending library and has been
actively involved in supporting families through the Grief Center of the Southern Tier.
Our commitment is to respond sensitively and professionally in fulfilling the wishes of the family, whatever those may be.”
When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
When tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not there to
see...
If the sun should rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears
for me...
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things, we didn’t get to say...
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you...
And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me
too...
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to
understand,
That an angel came and called my name, and took me by
the hand...
And said my place was ready, in heaven far above...
And that I’d have to leave behind, all those I dearly love...
But as I turned to walk away, a tear fell from my eye...
For all life, I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die...
I had so much to live for, so much yet to do...
It seemed almost impossible, that I was leaving you...
I thought of all the yesterdays, the good ones and the bad...
I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had...
If I could relive yesterday, just even for awhile...
I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile...
But then I fully realized, that this could never be...
For emptiness and memories, would take the place of me...
But when I walked through heaven’s gates, I felt so much at
home...
When God looked down and smiled at me, upon His great
golden throne...
Today for life on each is past, but here it starts anew...
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last for you...
So when tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re so
far apart...
For everytime you think of me, I’m right here, in your
heart...
ADDISON POST Saturday, SEPTEMBER 15, 2012 Page 5
Community Church of Woodhull
(9/9/12) Mat. 26:57-68 What do you stand for Do you believe that God was a major part of the foundation of America The Democratic parties platform does not take
God into account and doesn’t recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In Matthew 26 we read of Jesus’ condemnation and death. The religious leaders searched for
false witnesses, and the high court had already made their minds up before a verdict was determined. Then the high priest asked Jesus “Are you the Son of God” Jesus
answered “Yes, it is as you say.” That answer incriminated Him. They declared it blasphemy and carried out the verdict of guilty. We need to focus on Jesus’ answer, “Yes I
am the Christ.” We need to ponder the fact that this is the truth or a lie. We need to accept it one way or the other. Whatever you think determines what your future is. If it is
a lie, we are eternally doomed. If it is the truth we have eternal life. We can’t be unsure. If you believe this is true, what are you going to do about it Are you going to drop
God from your platform Where’s your heart in your relationships, your words and daily lives Eternal significance is what we do with the truth. The way we live is the same
as “I’m not going to vote or go to church, but I’ll just let things go.” What is your answer Yes or no If it’s yes it will show in the way you live your daily life. Our services are
at 9:30 in the Baptist Church and we welcome you to worship with us Sunday morning. Submitted by Sharon Calkins
Beginner Instrumental Information Night
It is time to discover the hidden musical talents of
our elementary children in grades 4-6. The students
involved in our band program have earned an outstanding
reputation of performance at Tuscarora Elementary
School. Our students perform solos at
NYSSMA, attend county functions
such as the All-County
Band, and participate in our
marching band. In fact, the
marching band has won
awards at the Colonial Days
Parade every year since 2005!
September is the time for fourth, fifth, or sixth grade
students to join the band and start a musical instrument!
TOPS #NY889 Woodhull
(9/6/12) We heard of Fifteen Reasons We Don’t Lose
Weight. (1) SUGAR. If an item has 8+ grams of sugar,
put it back on the shelf. Eat more fruits and don’t drink
flavored waters. (2) PROCESSED FOODS. They
are full of empty calories and sodium. Read labels. (3)
NUTRITION SNACK BARS. They are no different than
candy. (4) EXERCISE TOO LEISURELY. Pick up the
pace and get your heart rate up. (5) GRAZING ALL DAY.
(6) EATING OUT. Keep it to a minimum. (7) ALCOHOL.
It can make your gauge of fullness blurred. (8) GLU-
TEN FREE IS NOT CALORIE FREE. (9) DON’T SKIP
BFREAKFAST. (10) DON’T DISCRIMINATE AGAINST
CONDIMENTS. Calories add up, even in catsup, mayo
and mustard. (11) ENVIRONMENT. The color of the
room makes a difference. Red and yellow will increase
the appetite while blue and green can suppress your
appetite. (12) UNCLAIMED CALORIES. Sampling
from someone else’s plate and a filled candy dish sitting
around can keep you from losing weight. Keep a
journal and write down EVERYTHING. (13) DON’T
IGNORE FIBER. It helps you so you feel full longer.
(14) DON’T FORGET ABOUT FAT. Fried foods, pizza,
etc. are loaded with fat, and some have trans fats. (15)
Summary of Jasper-Troupsburg Board
of Education Meeting
August 22, 2012
This summary is intended to help the Board and the Superintendent
inform the community of the Jasper-Troupsburg School
District about the issues the district is addressing. If anyone has
a question or concern, please feel free to contact Chad C. Groff,
Superintendent (792-3675). Communications. Mrs. Tracie Mc-
Carthy, from GST BOCES, was introduced as the district’s new
food service manager. If you have specific questions related to
the cafeteria you can call the main district number or email her
at tmccarthy@gstboces.org The Sports Booster Club asked
the Board to consider not charging a gate fee for homecoming
events. The Board asked for some historic information regarding
gate revenues for the weekend. This information will be reviewed
at the September 5 meeting. Personnel items. The Board approved
Ms. Amanda Ballam as the Sr. High Honor Society Advisor. A civil service permanent appointment was approved for Mrs. Lorraine Barber as a typist for the district.
Mrs. Ellen Zver was approved as the timer/bookkeeper for the girls varsity and JV soccer teams. Mrs. Stephanie Cady was approved as the girls modified soccer coach, and
Mr. Terry VanGorden was approved as the boys modified soccer coach. The Board approved Mr. Nicholas Dailey as the district School Psychologist. Mrs. Tricia Dodge was
appointed into the teacher on special assignment position. We welcome Mr. Dailey to the district and wish him the best, and wish Mrs. Dodge the best in her new position.
Action items. After a lengthy discussion, the Board decided to remove from the agenda the creation and recommendation of a district physical therapist position. The district will
instead be contracting with GST BOCES for the service for the 2012-13 year, and monitoring the needs of our students. The Board approved the 2012-13 tax levy at $2,219,862.
The 2012-13 GST BOCES contract for services was approved. A contract with Steuben County was approved to provide transportation services for our pre-school special
education students. Discussion items. The Board discussed and approved a list of non-resident enrollments as recommended. The Board reviewed the 2012 year-end fund
balance, and approved to move $15,000 into the unemployment reserve. The board members on the transportation committee discussed the meeting that was held over the
summer. The recommendation from the committee is to offer a referendum to purchase two new buses. New buses have not been purchased since the 2009-10 school year.
Help Your House of Worship; It Has Always Helped You
If you have been attending your House of Worship for any length of time, you know you have been doing it
for a reason. Just being there has helped you through many a crisis or sorrow in your life. You have benefi ted
greatly from the inspiring sermons, and perhaps you have had an occasional talk with your clergyman
about some problem. Now, if at all possible, you should do something in return. Whatever you are able to
do, such as making phone calls, arranging a potluck dinner, helping with a cleanup project, etc., would be
welcome. It will help you to repay all the blessings and guidance you have received there over the years.
