feedback from employees who have been injured or have required medical treatment
on site. The three steps on which we requested feedback were (i) first aid treatment
(ii) medical services and (iii) line management support and response. Patients were
asked for their perception of these three elements, and the main area of concern has
been identified as the first aid step. Despite having more than the legally required
number of first aiders on site, access to people and equipment is being addressed as
a shortcoming.
In order to maintain high quality primary care, and improve where possible, a certain
percentage of primary care cases are reviewed by the primary health care doctor.Toyota
intends implementing an occupational health and safety management system, and as
part of this, exposure risk pathways are being developed for all risk areas in the various
plants. A number of health risk assessments have been undertaken to ensure focussed
hygiene surveys are conducted.
Lung Noise Other
As part of addressing repetitive strain disorders, the assembly line in the plant has been
completely revamped to account for the ergonomics affecting employees. The lower
moving platform system allows for better ergonomics and simultaneous improved
assembly quality.
Primary Health Care
Primary health conditions and chronic conditions – such as hypertension, diabetes,
tuberculosis and epilepsy – are treated at one of the eight clinics in Toyota South Africa.
One clinic is located in Johannesburg, and in Prospecton there is the main clinic, plus six
satellite clinics (exhaust plant, chassis plant, truck plant, stamping division, tool and
dye and Cataler South Africa). Primecure, a subsidiary of Netcare, are the health service
provider, and 65 Primecure and Toyota staff service the clinics, including all Employees
Assistance Programme (EAP) staff.
As part of our drive to provide caring and effective health facilities, we requested
Employee Assistance Programme
As well as direct medical care, Toyota South Africa provides on-site psycho-social
services to employees via our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) in order to deal
with emotional, psycho-social, family and substance abuse problems.
In any lost time incident, EAP is called in to assist the patient and their family. Staff try
to identify if there
were any non-work
related factors that
could have led to the
incident, such as
depression or home
problems. In addition,
EAP helps with
trauma counseling
for the individual and
their family members,
including trauma
debriefing.
