in Umlazi. They receive a small salary through a government subsidy. Redundant
furniture was donated to Hospice which was shared amongst their four centres around
Umlazi Township.
Environmental Management Directed Projects
Gardens for Africa
Toyota initiated the Gardens for
Africa Project in 2002, with the
assistance of Operation Hunger. Land
was identified in Folweni, and local
unemployed women grouped
themselves together and started
community food gardens.
Special Story
Toyota’s funding has largely been
used to provide a salary for a Field
Officer, without whom the project
would not function. Improved
nutrition for the participants and
their families as well as a small
income for the recycling groups has
been achieved. In addition, there has
been an increase in awareness of
various environmental issues.
In its almost 20 years of existence, the Toyota South Africa Foundation has ventured into
and supported a wealth of education specific initiatives of which the most prominent
has been the Toyota Teach Primary School Projects (TTPSP).
The flagship project for the Toyota South Africa Foundation,TTPSP has been in existence
for over a decade and unlike many other social investment projects, the investment in
this programme is not evident in bricks and mortar but rather it is measured in academic
achievements at the TTPSP schools.
The project is unique in that it takes a holistic approach to working in the schools. The
project’s initial goal was to produce teachers who are competent in Mathematics,
Science, Technology and Language
Skills and until three years ago the
focus was solely on educating
educators. In recent years, however, the
project’s focus has moved away from
individual teachers to providing
professional assistance to the whole
school (with particular focus on School
Governing bodies).
