Services Provided
Family Services is the community welfare arm of Somerville. The role of the
service is to assist people to participate in society at the greatest level to
which they aspire and are capable of achieving. Family Services staff work
with people of all ages – children, adolescents and adults, and can work with
families, couples or individuals. They assist anyone who is experiencing a crisis
or problem in their life. Specific programs include (but are not limited to):
• Family Support and Counselling, which provides a holistic, strengths-based
approach to support families to achieve their potential. Counsellors can work
with people on a wide range of issues such as: relationship difficulties; stress;
parenting; grief and loss; trauma; emotional difficulties; addictive behaviours;
anxiety; self-esteem; depression; domestic violence; self-care
• An Outreach Family Counsellor is based in Palmerston, who provides group
focussed counselling on a range of issues.
• Katherine Youth and Family Services - a youth (12-24 years) based
homelessness prevention program that provides a range of transitional
counselling and support services for young people who may be homeless,
in crisis or at risk of homelessness. Individual, family and group counselling,
advocacy, liaison and referral services are available for young people and
their families. An essential element of the work is early intervention and
preventative work within schools and in conjunction with government and
community organisations.
